Huckabee Leads 'Value Voters' Straw Poll
September 18, 2007 2:57 PM
ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee has been relying on Republican "values voters" since he entered the Presidential race in January.
Last night his persistence in courting those voters paid off when Huckabee was crowned the winner of a small "values voters" straw poll held in Fort Lauderdale. Coming in with a solid 63% of the vote in the poll, Huckabee won 219 of the votes. Texas Congressman Ron Paul came in a distant second receiving only 44 votes. It should be noted that none of the Republican frontrunners (Giuliani, Romney, McCain, and Thompson) were in attendance, though Thompson did manage 15 votes in absentia.
In a move that some might classify as sour grapes, GOP rival Sen. Sam Brownback this morning criticized Huckabee for his lack of knowledge on pro-life legislation.
In a statement released today the Brownback campaign said, "When asked if he would apply the principle of the Mexico City Policy -- which prevents American taxpayer dollars from supporting overseas organizations that provide abortions -- to groups that provide abortions in the U.S., Huckabee seemed confused and twice asked clarifying questions that indicated his ignorance of a major element of pro-life policy on the federal level."
Huckabee's National Campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, responded to the Brownback statement saying, "The delegates who gave Governor Huckabee a sweeping victory at the Values Voter debate decided that he is by far and away the best candidate to carry the banner on behalf of the social conservative movement. Anyone who is trying to taint his victory might be well-served by remembering President Reagan's 11th commandment."
Saltsman's reference to Reagan's commandment, "Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican," could be construed as hypocritical; Huckabee has had his fair share of thinly-veiled criticism for Mitt Romney's abortion stance over the past few months.

I am curious why you said "distant second" with a spin for Ron Paul. Then saying "only receiving 44 votes". Why not mention Guliani and say he received only "xx" votes. I don't think this type of journalism with agenda is working anymore. Please are catching on, too bad you guys aren't.
