Democrats Launch Anti-Romney Website
September 05, 2007 12:17 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: The Democratic Party in Massachusetts has launched a new website in an effort to discredit Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
The state party says it will try to dig up dirt on the former Massachusetts Governor, and will post the information to a new website, RomneyFacts.com.
"Having endured four years of Governor Romney's failed leadership, the Massachusetts Democratic Party is uniquely aware of the real Mitt Romney," reads the website. "Time and time again, Romney has demonstrated a willingness to say anything and everything to get elected, and this site seeks to highlight and expose each and every one of those instances."
The website is a clearinghouse of information on Romney, most of which has been reported before.
The website says Romney has "flip-flopped" on issues including abortion, gun laws, gay marriage, immigration reform and his desire to serve in Vietnam -- and cheekily asks readers to purchase their own Romney "flip-flop" t-shirt promoting the website.
Under "Romney's Rap Sheet," the website also details Romney's two arrests, one 1981 arrest for disorderly conduct in Massachusetts when the family boat did not display proper registration, and another 1965 arrest in Michigan involving a practical joke at a golf course.
However, Romney's campaign says none of the information is new.
"It doesn't come as a shock that they have information about the governor in a day and age of transparency when the disclosure of documents is widely available on the Internet," Romney spokesperson Kevin Madden told ABC News.
"This website just proves the Democrats' biggest fear is running against Governor Romney," Madden said.
Opposition party research is nothing new. However in an unusual twist, the RomneyFacts.com website asks readers to be "citizen journalists," mining primary documents about Romney themselves. Usually party researchers are employed to dig up damaging information about an opposing candidate and leak it to the news media.
"Have a tip about Romney? Send it here," reads the website, with a link to the email of Alex Goldstein, communications director for the Massachusetts Democratic Party, who could not be reached for comment.
Telling readers there is a "Massachusetts Mitt" and a "Red-State Romney," the website has posted seeming incongruous quotes by the former Governor.
"I will preserve and protect a woman's right to choose and am devoted and dedicated to honoring my word in that regard," reads a Romney quote on the website from 2002.
"Roe v. Wade continues to work its destructive logic throughout our society This can't continue," reads a Romney quote from May 2007.
Madden argues the Massachusetts Democratic Party isn't giving readers an accurate description of Romney's positions.
"This is just an attempt to distort his record," Madden said, "Governor Romney has an excellent record of experience, leadership and governing in Massachusetts."

This is a very disappointing way for the Democratic party to campaign. I wonder how Hillary or Obama would hold up under such a website put out by the Republican party.
I was leaning towards voting for a Democrat for the next President, however this type of campaigning just reinforces my concerns about the lack of leadership in the democratic party.
What is the party so afraid of?

Are you kidding?!
The GOP and their allied organizations has not only had similar websites operational for months, but they are even putting together a feature length movie to try and smear Hillary, with Dick Morris, Swift Boaters, et al chiming in.
This MA Democratic Party website is an attempt to mimick the sort of stuff the GOP has been doing online since 2000.

Are you kidding? Just because some other kids did this before doesn’t make it a good thing. None of the candidates have to associate or distance themselves from this. Where is Michael Moore's input? This is the clearing house for innuendo, implication, twisting of circumstance to fit the desired influence of those posting content. So until Edwards, Clinton, Obama, etc. add to the content it is purely slanted and shadowy propaganda. But it would be a liability for any of them to touch the site. I have a leaning toward Edwards, but if he touches this, all bets are off.

It is a rather unfortunate development. After all, we do not advocate Karl Rove's tactics, and though someone who can get great candidates elected is definitely desirable, using the tactics of "The Evil Genius" is not the way to go. Running on the facts, and a proven tract record of getting things done for all candidates would turn the dirty swift boat politics on its head. The only problem is that the swift boaters lived to fight another day after besmirshing the military valor of Kerry and Clelland. They are after Hillary, Obama and others this go round. So, how do we combat that kind of slander? It's already been proven that you can't just sit still and let all kinds of rumors fly and not refute them, or respond in any way. Silence, for some people, is like taking the 5th. There is a sort of feeling that taking the 5th means that you're guilty, or that at least there is some validity to the charges.

I think it's a good thing to get all the info out there about any political candidate-Republican or Democrat.
I don't like the fact that Romney has turned into a right-wing relious nut for the neocons. He once was a rational man. What happened?

Funny how the left wingers always misrepresent the right as "Neocons." Remember...to be a Neocon, you once had to be a liberal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservative). I love liberals and their blatant disregard for historical relevance!

This is almost laughable. He has two arrest records, one for a joke an one for registration of a boat. This is sure to discredit him for President. It seems to me that the Democrats are afraid of Gov. Romney. I look forward to see what this website can find on him. If he was a Baptist, he would be running away with the nomination.

It saddens me to see political campaigns degenerate into a name calling and dirt throwing effort by the opposition party (the democrats) against a fine, highly principled man such as Mitt Romney. Why can't they let the voters know of their stand on the issues instead of grabbing at straws to discredit Romney. The american public is too wise to let this futile effort by the democrats have any lasting effect on his candidacy. Again, it is a sad day in America to see how un-principled we have become as a nation.
Sincerely,
Dallas E. Murdoch

I mostly agree with Dallas and some others. Though, I disagree with Dallas when he says the American public is too wise to not be able to tell the difference between truth and untruth. Example: Look at the Democrats. If Democrats had a full head of brains, they wouldn't be Democrats. But Alas, they are truly 'Dimocrats'.

Also- as far as changing his mind on certain issues- Not two short years ago I was very pro-immigrant probably due to the fact that I grew up in a border town on the US side. Many of my friends were Mexican as well as a love interest. Everything changed after witnessing the first Mayday March in '06. How dare those grubbing lawbreakers who are already recieving US handouts DEMAND Amnesty!? Fix your own country. You see kids, many people change thier minds when right versus wrong is exposed.

There is no flipflopping by Mitt Romney. As a person matures, he is allowed to change his stand on issues, especially if there is a better way. For instance, I was a lifelong Democrat until the Party changed: it now represents higher taxes so the Govt. can meet everyone's needs instead of working, planning, saving; Govt. can decide if I want health insurance, etc.; capital punishment is wrong, but abortion is not; Pres. Bush is the enemy, not Islamic radicals; open borders, etc. etc. Enough is enough. If
your policies pass, America as we know it will be gone along with sovereignty and individual choice and freedom.
