Obama Doesn't Like Iraq Hearing on 9/11

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said during a Senate hearing on the future of Iraq with Army Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, that holding the hearing on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks "perpertuates the notion" that Iraq and 9/11 are linked.
"I think we should not have had this discussion on 9/11 or 9/10 or 9/12," Obama said during his opening statement. "It perpetuates this notion that the original attacks had something to do with going into Iraq."
Obama went on to criticize what he called a failed Iraq strategy.
"This continues to be a disastrous foreign policy mistake," he said. "There are bad options and worse options."
"This is not a criticism of you gentlemen but a criticism of the President," Obama said.
However, the Illinois Senator accused Petraeus of dodging questions about the overarching Iraq war strategy. "You've punted a little bit," Obama said. " We don't have limitless resources … the question is one of strategy not tactics."
He argued the administration has artificially lowered expectations of what constitutes progress in Iraq. "We have now set the bar so low that modest improvement in what was a completely chaotic situation… is considered success. And it's not," Obama said.
Obama argued President Bush has made it impossible to have a bi-partisan discussion about the way forward in Iraq because he refuses to admit the war strategy was flawed. "There has been no acknowledgement of that on the part of this administration," he said.
"We have the president in Australia suggesting somehow that we are, as was stated before, kicking A-S-S.," Obama said. "How can we have a president making that assessment?"
Obama told Petraeus the President's assertions, "It makes it very difficult then for those of us who would like to join with you in a bipartisan way to figure out how to best move forward to extricate this from the day-to-day politics that infects Washington."

it seems to me that many people bashing Obama are bashing him simply because he's being negative. Would you rather keep sending sons and daughters to die so rich people can keep getting richer, all the while hearing "Everything's OK" or would you rather hear the truth about the situation and start to fix it? Yes, Iraq is a haven for al Qaida. Why? Because we blew up enough of Iraq for some people to get angry and take al Qaida's side. Who attacked us on 9/11? Saudis, Egyptians, NOT IRAQIS. How many Iraqi citizens who have no ill will against us have died since the start of this war? Nobody knows, because our government stopped releasing those figures in March, 2005. They claimed the media was taking those numbers "out of context." How can you take a number, which is not subjective, out of context? Stop hiding behind your political parties and open your eyes.

All Senator Obama can do is bitch and gripe like the rest of the Democrats. Someone running for President should have some ideas to offer, not just gripes about the current administration. This is just another campaign speech for him rather than a hearing on the state of the war as it is for the country. The dim bulbs out there can continue to pray for President Obama....I'm still waiting to see Senator Obama.

Once again Barack shows that he is intelligent and his thought process is well above your normal politicians and baloney. What a coincidence eh ? after so many years since 9-11 and the start of the Iraqi war the most critical hearings at the most critical time just happen to start near the anniversary of 9-11. Its just a diversion, plain and simple. They are not related, have never been related, and we continue to lose credibility around the world. We should all be used to it by now from this administration. Nothing but political hijinx since the beginning.

If what you say is valid then NOTHING the government tells us is true. Hence, we're still at war in Europe, we never walked on the moon, airplanes don't break the speed of sound and Bush wasn't elected President twice.

Obama may not believe we're kicking Al Qaeda's ass, but I would bet Osama does. He's lost hundreds of his best terrorists since the surge began and dozens of his leaders. It must break whatever he has in place of a heart to see the very Sunnis in Mesopatamia, the center of his new Caliphate, now turning on his boys and helping us to hunt them down.
Whatever the future holds, this is a major success.

We've had 27000 US casualties in the Iraq war, and this is shaping up to be the worst year yet. We've gained nothing, and really, we could gain nothing by this, because there were no damn WMD's to begin with. We started this war, which is an un-American thing to do.

I will accept that Islam is a "peaceful" religion when Muslims turn on these extremists and put them down themselves. Until then, we infidels will have to continue to do the job for you. Also, what is peaceful about a religion that espouses death for any in it's ranks who choose to break away and follow a different path of belief? Or who riot violently in the streets because of a cartoon. Or kill a raped woman out of "honor"???

Only you would consider leftists saying we need to armor the troops and go after Osama as anti-american speech. But whatever, that little yellow ribbon on the back of your car allows you to do whatever you want to hurt the soldiers because it clearly states that you 'support our troops'.

Now consider In Dead Aim how "w" talks about 'refilling the 'ol coffers' which brings to mind the hord of Texas oil men continuing to get reep record breaking profits, as long as, the World's 2d largest oil reserve remains in complete chaos.
Go ahead read, as you'll soon understand that it's not just our fighting men & women stuck in Iraq fighting amid a civil war and a disappearing enemy like in Viet Nam, it's all about non-civil empirical ambitions and greed that have us all trapped paying the bill for something none of US actually want, understand or need. The equation is simply this: when there are too many sides and too many unanswered questions (eh! General) such as "why are we here in the first place?" it's best to just get out.
