Romney sees '08 move to Iraq support role
September 03, 2007 11:38 PM
ABC News' Matt Stuart Reports: Fmr. Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) predicted an '08 begin to the withdrawal of troops from Iraq on Monday. When questioned about the war in the Iraq, Gov. Romney described his three-staged vision for the war, namely, surge, support, and standby. According to Gov. Romney's plan, after the current surge phase is completed, a support phase (in which the United States supported Iraq through air surveillance, inteligence, etc.) can begin, followed by a standby phase in which US troops are pulled out of Iraq, stationed in nearby countries like Kuwait and Quatar.
After explaining his vision, Gov. Romney went on to declare the he sees the phases, "happening relatively soon. I think you're going to find sometime in '08 that by virtue of success of the surge militarily, we'll be able to move to the support role." As a result, the United State could then "bring our guys home as soon as we possibly can without igniting a regional conflict."
On a later follow-up question on Iraq, Gov. Romney expressed optimism that Gen. Petraus' report would show "that the surge is working from a military standpoint and therefore, from a military standpoint, we're able to start pulling back."
Gov. Romney's comments came the same day President Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq.

The Pentagon has said that we cannot sustain the surge past next spring so Romney and Bush both think that that reality will somehow prove them omnicient on the war. What a pair of idiots, thinking the American people will fall for that. If Romney wants to do his part, he can counsel his sons to join up, if it is not against their religion as well as their political philosophy of letting poor people and patriots fight our wars while they pursue office and riches.

I just love the comments posted by A Viet Nam Vet, I was reading where Bushie went to Iraq, they realy should have kept him, with the sons of Romney, he stated that they were "doing more important work with the campaign that going to Iraq, I would also like to know if Bushies son-in-law to be will be going to Iraq, or will Geo W. be vetoing that.

I just can't believe how ignorant the previous comments were. I've always been under the impression that people who read the news are less ignorant. I guess my incorrect assumption has proven me ignorant as well.

Since 2003 there have been lots of opinions on what should be done and how to accomplish it in Iraq. As an Active Duty Sailor, I was obligated by Oath to obey all orders of my superiors, which include the President whether I agree or not. One thing I can say is that all America knows that Democracy in Iraq is not the only reason we are fighting there. The value and riches of the land in that area is of most importance. And, American Sailors, AIRMEN, Marines, & Soldiers give their lives for that. This includes my First Cousin who was killed in Iraq earlier this year by an IED. It's time for them to come home and ALL politicians in Washington to be honest with the AMERICAN public. There's no Trust in Washington and our son's and daughter's pay the ultimate price. Washington started this and the American public as a whole has to force Washington to end it.

If we started pulling out of iraq today, how long would it take to get everyone out? What of the soldiers who get out (or not) last?
