Steelworkers Back Edwards

ABC's Raelyn Johnson reports: Former Senator John Edwards (D-N.C) kicks off Labor Day in Pittsburgh where he is being endorsed by the United Steelworkers Union and the United Mine Workers of America.

Edwards will appear on stage with United Steelworkers president Leo Gerard.  “These workers have felt the negative impact of a broken system in Washington that is rigged against America’s working families for far too long,â€? said Edwards who’s tailored his populist pith to attract the working class Americans he’ll be endorsed by today.  In advance of today’s rally Edwards promised, “As president I will proudly lead the fight on behalf of working families with their support.â€?

Today’s endorsement gives Edwards the largest bloc of union support among the democratic presidential contenders.  The USW and EMWA represent over 12 million workers and retirees combined.

Last week Edwards was endorsed by the Carpenters union.  The announcement came on the heels of Sen. Chris Dodd (D-C.T.) receiving he support of the International Union of Firefighters.  Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) also received union backing last week, picking up the support of the Machinists.
