Thompson: 'HillaryCare' a 'Punishment'

ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: Republican candidate Fred Thompson joined the din targeting Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton’s newly-unveiled healthcare plan via a familiar method of mass communication: a video posting on his website.

Thompson – the former Tennessee senator and “Law & Order” actor – follows suit with other Clinton opponents berating 'HillaryCare' a "punishment."

In the posting taped during a road trip through Orlando, Thompson countered that “the best way to improve the best healthcare system in the world –  which is what we get right here in the United States – is to expand choice.”

“To some Democrats …. choice to them, is like a cross is to a vampire, they don’t like to see it coming down the road,” Thompson says, leaning back into his car seat, to the camera.

In a different section of his website, Thompson says he supports increased consumer choice “while streamlining regulations through free-market solutions.” Though he lays out his own beliefs about healthcare, Thompson falls short of offering his own policy plan on his website or in recent campaign appearances.

We have two organizations run by the government – the military and homeland security. I doubt anyone would say the private sector could do a better job running these two organizations.
Here in Iowa, there was a campaign to raise money for a child who needed arms. It ended up Medicaid was the one to pay for those artificial arms. The private sector did not stand up to the plate.
Jesus was the one who mingled with the prostitutes, the down and out, and the sinner. I am confused of what kind of health care system the Republicans want to create. Today insurance companies have preexisting clauses for everything from life insurance to health insurance. I believe if Jesus were alive today, he would watch how the Republicans handled health insurance for those with preexisting conditions.
Japan has a quasi-public health care system. They also have the highest health statistics. Clinton’s health care proposal is similar to Japan’s health care system. This is where you can keep your private insurance. However, government (federal, regional and local insurance pools) covers all others who are not covered. Subsequently, they spend a lot less on total GDP on health care than compared to the US. Yet have the highest health statistics.
Just saying the private sector can do better than government is not looking at how the military and homeland security is set up. Looking the other way at people with preexisting conditions – thinking the private sector can do a better job; is not looking at all the examples such as the child who needed artificial arms. I believe Jesus would be appalled by the amount of people who fall though the cracks of our health care system.
Lastly, the European health care system is a single payer system. What Clinton is proposing is a system more like the Japanese health care system. It makes more sense to have people to make doctors appointments instead of running to the emergency rooms for medical care. Perhaps with this kind of payer system, we may all pay less for health care and yet obtain much higher health statistics for all Americans.
Or do the Republicans have a better plan for health care that really does not overlook those with preexisting conditions… Suggestion, look at how the Japanese health care system is run.

I knew the Republicans and their corporate buddies would line up like pigs at a trough to squeal against the idea of universal health care. The fact is there are a number of countries that have single payer health care that Thompson is squealing against and they are both cheaper and higher quality than the hodgepodge crazy-quilt of neglect and partial 'private pay' and starved out government assistance mess of a medical system we have here...these greed heads have hated poor or middle class people having anything at all for 50 years, but they have plenty of money for messes like Iraq....Fred Thompson! What a bozo!

The fact that Fred Thompson calls the US health care system "the best in the world" clearly shows that he's as out of touch with the realities of the situation as Clinton. More insurance isn't going to bring down spiraling health care costs and Clinton's plan isn't health CARE, it's mandatory health INSURANCE. Insurance isn't health care. According to the Insurance industry's own statistics, 3% of all claimants are rejected. Total that up by the hundreds of millions of people seeking covered health care each year in the US alone and you end up with tens or hundreds of thousands of insured Americans denied the health care they may desperately need. The system is broken. Neither Thompson or Clinton seem to understand this fact. But at least Clinton's trying. All Thompson has done is criticize what others propose. If he doesn't like that plan, let's hear one from him that helps actually address the problem of health CARE. I'm not holding my breath there.
