Thompson Trashes Castro in Miami
September 14, 2007 4:23 PM
ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: Republican candidate Fred Thompson gulped down café and nibbled on a postre de guyaba Friday during a campaign stop in Miami's Little Havana.
At Versailles, a Cuban restaurant off Calle Ocho, Thompson addressed Cuban leader Fidel Castro, calling him "one of the last remaining communists in the world, dragging his people down into the mire."
Thompson said sanctions and embargos against the country must not be lifted.
"[Castro] is a head of state-sponsored terrorism and he must be dealt with as such," Thompson told the crowd. "And our policies must reflect that in every respect."
Thompson also threw a veiled barb at film-maker Michael Moore, though did not mention him by name.
"We send our movie stars and other people down there who are gullible enough to, you know, be wined and dined and see these little Potemkin villages that he's set up and they come back and say he's wonderful and they've got the best healthcare system in the world. I want to know where they'll go if they get seriously ill. I want to watch and see if they'll go to Cuba to get their healthcare," Thompson said.
Earlier this year, Thompson criticized Moore’s trip down to Cuba for his film about healthcare, "Sicko."
In a video posting, Thompson told Moore "the next time you're down in Cuba, visiting your buddy" to ask the Cuban government about a filmmaker who was sent to a mental institution.
"Mental institution, Michael, might be something you ought to think about," Thompson said in that video.

Way to go, Thompson. I, too, sure would like to see movie stars, Michael Moore and what not go down to Cuba for their world class health care system.

Nice, Thompson! And precisely on point - when Moore gets his inevitable heart attack after eating yet another 3 Big Macs, I doubt he'll be hopping a lear jet to Cuba because of their excellent health care.
