White House Seeks $42.3 Billion More for War
September 26, 2007 11:22 AM
ABC News' Jonathan Karl and Tom Shine Report: ABC News has learned that the Bush Administration plans to ask Congress for another $42.3 billion to fund the global war on terror. That brings the total request for 2008 war funding to nearly $190 billion, making 2008 the costliest year, by far, for war funding.
Defense Secretary Gates will present the funding request to the Senate Appropriations Committee this afternoon. According to a copy of Mr. Gates' testimony obtained by ABC News, the additional funding request includes:
- $11 billion to buy more MRAPs (this makes a total of more than 16.3 to be spent on MRAPs in 2008
- $6 billion for Army and Marine combat units operating in Iraq
- $6 billion for training and equipment of U.S. ground troops "to accelerate deployment readiness of Army units"
- $9 billion to repair and replace equipment used in Iraq and Afghanistan
- $1 billion to "improve U.S. facilities in the region and consolidate our bases in Iraq."
- $1 billion to train Iraqi security forces, bringing the total to $5.7 billion for training Iraqi security forces in '08 alone.
"I urge the Congress to approve the complete Global War on Terror request as quickly as possible and without excessive and counterproductive restrictions," Gates will say, according to his written testimony.
The administration has already requested $147 billion for funding the global war on terror. The additional request of $42.3 billion brings the total to $189.3 billion for fiscal year 2008.
Here's a rundown of how much has been spent on the war on terror since the invasion of Iraq:
-2007 -- $173 billion-2006 -- $121.5 billion
-2005 -- $107.6 billion
-2004 -- $94.1 billion
-2003 -- $81.1 billion

NO, NO & NO -- let them take it in taxes on the rich or where-ever. Just how much is Blackwater costing the middleclass tax payer, how much do these guys make and what is the average of soldiers leaving the military and working for Blackwater???????
This is absurd and the Democratic and Republican Legislature must stand up and say NO!!! Loudly ---- This is absolutely ABSURD. Have they ever recovered any of the "LOST" guns and how much has the US taken in OIL money from IRAQ.

I have noticed that when the Dems try to pass legislation ending the war, the news reports that "The Democratic congress failed again"
Why don't they say, "Again, the republican minority in congress has blocked democratic efforts to stop the war?"
Why don't they say, "More American troops will die this week because Republicans again blocked democratic efforts to represent the majority of Americans by ending the war and bringing the troops home?"
Why?
The reporting on Democratic failure, instead of on Republican obstructionism is almost total.
Contact the anchors who are perpetrating this virtual attack on the democrats and support of the cover-up of Republicans’ obstructionism..

When will the American people learn to stand up to Bush and the Republicans.

I find it sad that the "left" just does not seem to understaind what this war is really about. It is very simple...we can fight them over there..or HERE. Which do you prefer. Remember 911?? If the boots on the ground are pulled out. the killing will spread. I would bet that all the left wingers that are yelling to stop the war have one thing alike. NONE of them have what it takes to join the military. And yes..to all the left wingers that read this..I WAS IN THE ARMY..and would be over there now if I was not to dol to go. remember this there are only two people who have offered to die for you. JESUS CHRIST..and the AMERICAN GI!!!!!
Liberals...put up or SHUT UP!!!

Why can't the Bush Administration SEE that this is clearly what the American people DO NOT WANT??? When OH WHEN is the voice of the people going to be heard? Is it January of '09 yet??? Geesh!

I think it's is time as a country to stand up and end this. We can watch our leaders destroy our country by spending billions on a war which benefits them. OR...we can use our wealth proactively for childrens healthcare, poverty abolishment, racial equality, and education. I am in disbelief that we as a nation have not stood unified in defiance of this usurpation of power and authority.

What an amazing partisan headline for a formerly vernerable mainstream news organization. How low can you go?

Fight them over there instead of here? Well said, dimwit. Instead of focusing the fight in Afghanistan, the IQ challenged Bush opened up another front in IRAQ and in so doing, allowed the terrorists to Win. The War on Terror is nothing but a Sham. 90% of 911 terrorists came from Saudi Arabia, Yet the Saudis were never sanctioned, instead this admin rewarded them with 400% more oil revenues, resulting in record donations to the Terrorists all at the same time USA is breaking deficit records. This admin has done more damage to the homeland than all terrorists could hope to accomplish. Just what good has happened to the nation under GWB ???

The President clearly cannot hear the voice of the People. What I want to know is can Congress hear us? It is incredulous to me that I continue to say and hear the PEOPLE of the United States say to all branches of our government -ENOUGH! Do we not exist? What happened to the PEOPLE?

If the democratic party members cut off funding for the troops, the Rupublicans would tell America that the democrats don't support the troops
America is too ignorant to realize that by cutting off funding, they are saving the troops lives by bringing them out of that quagmire.
Why would a middle/lower class American support Bush when he is vetoing their children's health care and lowering taxes on the rich, not for the poor?
Seems like its the share croppers supporting the confederacy all over again

This is absurd! $189 billion for WAR! A war that was unjustified, a war that is criminal... George Bush does not care what the American public think about this war. It is quite obvious that the MAJORITY of Americans want us OUT of Iraq, yet he only moves to escalate the war. GWB has a lot of blood on his hands. Why can't we unite as a country and stand up to this war-monger?!
"So here's to the country that you've torn out the heart of... George W., go find yourself another country to be part of!"

Bush would spend every last dollar the middle and lower income families in America has to fight his war in Iraq. What good has come from it? Bin Laden is still
making videos, the taliban is making a resurgence in Afghanistan while American kids are dying by the boatload fighting an a war which we cannot win while civil war rages. In the meantime, 10 million American children must do without health insurance. In 2008 America will choose it's new leaders and I will bet the Republicans will wish they had listened to the will of the people. If Bush wants to fight terrorism, let him bomb the hell out of Iran and Syria without one single boot on the ground. The terrorists will listen to that kind of "talk".

Thank you Bush for making me alot of money on this war,my stocks r doing well

Isn't that nice, the "Family Values" Republicans and Bush have decided that we must pay for more bullets and death and carnage, then make certain kids in America can go to the Doctor. Hum, quit the dilemma, let's see, bullets-Doctor, now wonder which one you would pick.
It's obvious what the Republican priority is.

Is he dumb or what? Hasn't anyone of his demented administration told him that if the Repubs get a president in in 2008 that they will need the next generation of kids to be strong and healthy to carry on the war in Iraq and God knows where else the Repub war mongers will go next? Keep them healthy GWB! Your GOP party will need them to fight if they win the election! Naturally, they will be pulling from the underprivileged kids again. No wonder he just wants to help the poorest of the poor. They are the majority of the military now. Especially since GWB considers $83K a year (what he probably spends on horse feed) a lot of money. It's a drop in the bucket in this present expensive Repub economy. Can't afford to buy anything cheap now - it's all from China and killing us so we need to pay premium if we want to live another day. GO BUSH AND GOP You're all doing a heckuva job, Brownie!

dumbya has helped terrorism more than he has hampered it...and the brainwashed few aren't doing their kids any favors by believing his crap
