Bush: 'This Government Does Not Torture People'
October 05, 2007 10:52 AM
ABC News' Jennifer Duck Reports: In a morning appearance from the Oval Office, President Bush firmly defended the administration's interrogation policies saying, "This government does not torture people. We stick to U.S. Law and our international obligations."
Bush describing the program in place as one designed to "better protect the American people."
"When we find somebody who may have information regarding a potential attack on America, you bet we're going to detain them, and you bet we're going to question them because the American people expect us to find out information, actual intelligence, so we can help them, help protect them. That's our job," Bush said.
The President said "highly-trained professionals" question "extremists and terrorists" and get information from terror suspects by using techniques that are known to select members of Congress.
"In other words, we've got professionals who are trained in this kind of work to get information that will protect the American people, and by the way, we have gotten information from these high-value detainees that have helped protect you," the president said.
"Finally, the techniques that we use have been fully disclosed to appropriate members of the United States Congress," Bush said. "The American people expect their government to take action to protect them from further attack, and that's exactly what this government is doing, and that's exactly what we'll continue to do."
Bush also lauded the morning's favorable job figures calling them a "real tribute to the hard-working Americans."

Well Old Trooper, I am a Vietnam Vet and I would not want our troops being treated the same way as we are treating CIVILIANS picked up in house sweeps and at checkpoints. There is a Geneva Convention, though Bush has put his own definitions to that under the MCA which has been ruled unconstitutional! I guess you don't believe we should follow the law and allow massacres like that at My Lia! By the way, I am not a kook or a dummy

1. "Do any of the dummies who have made comments have the vaguest idea as to what "torture" actually is?
2. Assuming that our troops do slide over the line and carry out what you believe is torture..."
Please "Old Trooper" say no more.
I am guessing by your comments that you don't have a passport, have never lived overseas, have little knowledge of history, and probably never served in combat (as I have in all areas). You're safe in your little redstate (so far), to hell with the rest of the world.
Until, of course, you find out these same Americans are willing to torture you! (Wait! But I'm American!)

Can't he at least sit up straight?

We really believe you, NOT.

Bush's response is pathetic. I think it's appalling how low he expects America to stoop in the name of "safety." America use to stand for something great, now we are using primitive tactics on many innocent people. Abu Ghraib must never be forgotten.

Bush's statement provides irrefutable evidence that the US does torture.

I would write more if I could simply stop laughing at the ignorance of this pathetic excuse for an elected government official. When will this end?

No... Bush & Cheney just turn helpless and innocent citizens over to other countries which DO torture - as he also did with at least one Canadian, and with citizens of numerous other countries. George Bush is the most dangerous President ever to hold office in the history of our nation.

Why should anyone believe anything this smerk says. This is a person who believes good is bad and bad is good. He would fit perfectly into the role of O’Brien, torture and degradation are simply tools that characterize the authoritarian regime, the republican right represents.

And why don't you torture them? You should! I am an American and you have my permission. Thankuverymuch!
Posted by: gaby | Oct 5, 2007 1:14:45 PM
Bush: (wagging his finger)" I did not order any torture at that prison, Abu Gharib. The American people need to know this, and I need to go back to do the work of the people."
Waterboarding anyone?

Man, talk about torture! We have been tortured by Bush and his band of bandits since 2000! He certainly has had a lot of practice at this torture thing he claims to be innocent of!

"This country does not torture." ...at least not what WE define as torture. What the rest of the world thinks, well, Bush just never cared about the rest of the world.

Each and every government in history has had to use some draconian measures to ensure the safety of its people, whether the media has found out about them or not. (And we all know the deny routine by now, don't we?) You think because you don't read about, it doesn't happen? Wholesale and indiscriminate torture by thugs leads to Nazi Germany. But a case-by-case basis on a sliding scale does make some sense, even in our country, which apparently uses Disney characters as its role models.

Harry Reid tortures the American public by showing his face in camera and opening his mouth each day to slander America and our Armed Forces. This is cruel punishment to hear his weasel voice on the liberal media....then there's Hillary's fake laugh, scary, but I did tape it over and over again and will use for Halloween to give the kids a good scare..hey, it's "For the Children".

This man has absolutely NO credibility whatsoever! Even the republicans have to admit that they don't take his words on face value. It is incredible that he is still the president of this great nation. The democrats who are controlling Congress are a bunch of cowards!
Posted by: tom | Oct 5, 2007 1:34:38 PM
Does Bushy even know how to tell the truth? He is the worst president and history will probably profess this too!
Our validity/values in the world has fallen to such low standards with this president.
I can't wait to send him packing!!!!!

My husbans is a Vietnam Vet and I have many friends who were also. Even John McCain said that when he was tortured at the Hanoi Hilton he gave fake names and information. What makes us believe that anyone who is tortured by us or our outside contractors or other countries that like to do this sort of thing is telling us the truth.
By the way, I am a native born Washington Metro DC area person and haven't believed anything the Federal Government has told me for 40 years. I did my time in Federal Government service and I know for a fact they lie whenever given the chance.

How we torture sorry interrogate suspected terrorists must be kept secret otherwise the terrorists will train to be able to withstand it.
Personally I would dose them up with Sodium Penthanol or a similar drug to illicit the correct reponses

Not true
Many public speaches by George are torture ! ! !
The rest are laughable.
