Edwards Raises $7 Million in Q3
October 01, 2007 4:14 PM
ABC News' David Muir and Raelyn Johnson Report: Former Sen. John Edwards D-N.C., raised $7 million dollars in third quarter fundraising. Edwards' campaign announcement comes just hours after Sen. Barack Obama's D-Ill., campaign said it brought in $20 million in the same time period. Still, when asked about Sen. Obama's totals, the Edwards campaign repeatedly turned attention to Senator Hillary Clinton D-N.Y. even though Clinton's campaign had not yet announced how much she raised this quarter.
Last week, Edwards announced he was going to accept public matching funds after trailing Senators Clinton and Obama in the fundraising race. He is now calling on Senator Clinton to do the same.
"We believe that people are sick and tired of the corroded, busted, rigged system in Washington," said Joe Trippi, Edwards' senior advisor. "Hillary Clinton does not want this election, this primary framed on the issue of money."
With the money raised this quarter, the Edwards campaign says it has $12 million dollars on hand to spend on the primary campaign. They estimate Edwards will be eligible for an additional $10 million in public matching funds after the first of the year for a total of $22 million heading into the Iowa caucuses.
"He did not want to advocate for ending the problem that money has on our politics without participating in the one public financing system we have," said Jonathan Prince, Edwards' Deputy Campaign Manager. If nominated, Prince said Edwards would challenge the Republican nominee to join the system. "If the Republican nominee joins the system, then we're certainly going to participate in the public financing system," said Prince.
Until today, the Edwards camp has been extremely tight-lipped about fundraising expectations this quarter which comes in stark contrast to the last quarter.
In the final days of the second quarter, the Edwards campaign was very vocal about its ability to turn controversy into cash after comments made by conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter galvanized Edwards' supporters.

I like the fact that Edwards raised 7 mil even through Obama has "mama war bucks" Oprah and wealthy friends giving to the last dollar and Clinton has(big daddy bill)and all the big money lobbyists giving to her. They still did not raise that much more than Edwards even though they got more free media miles than anyone in history. The press showered them constantly with all sorts of praises while trying to subdue Edwards.
