Edwards Keeps Pounding Clinton on Iran Vote
October 14, 2007 1:07 PM
ABC News Raelyn Johnson Reports: Democratic presidential contender former Sen. John Edwards D-N.C. is not ready to forgive Sen. Hillary Clinton for her recent vote to declare the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.
Edwards has been campaigning through New Hampshire all weekend scrutinizing Clinton's vote, telling supporters he worries, "if Bush invades Iran are we going to hear again, 'Well only if I knew then what I know now'?"
An article published in today's New York Times alluded to the justification behind Clinton's vote--that she's preparing for a foreign policy fight in the general election.
At a house party in Dover, New Hampshire Sunday, Edwards rehashed Clinton's vote and the reasons behind it.
"There was a story in today's New York Times about this issue and about her vote on this issue. And some of her advisors said that she voted yes because she was moving from primary mode to general election mode," said Edwards.
"I may be wrong, and you'll have to tell me, have we already decided who’s going to win the New Hampshire primary? That's the first point I want to make. Second instead of primary mode versus general election mode, instead of saying one thing in the primary and something different for the general election, how about if we do tell the truth mode all the time. How about if we say exactly what we believe and stand by that position."
Clinton D-N.Y., has defended her vote, which did not authorize war with Iran, by saying that she simply wants to put pressure on the Iranians in light of the top commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus saying that Iran is waging a proxy war against the U.S. in the war-torn country. She also suggested that her rivals are deliberately misleading voters about the meaning of the vote.

And the media lets her get away with this wrong by giving her the last comment all the time. Just listen to how that sounds -- 'she's preparing for a general election fight'. That's awful, playing with the American people like that, with our lives, only saying things and positioning yourself, not according to how you really think about the situation and if it is the right thing for the American people as being their president, but according to what may get the most votes in the general election. It also speaks of her arrogance as she is saying she has already won the primary vote. I just can't understand how ANYONE ANYONE can support Hillary Clinton, how anyone can go to the polls and vote for her.

If you just can't understand, then don't vote for her!
However, I will since she has the courage to actually vote and take heat. Obama doesn't take these votes because he's a coward and wants to be able to take whichever side winds up popular.

It would be too tedious to go through all the inconsistencies of John Edwards' positions (deciding to invest over half his money in hedge funds and then railing against them etc.), so I won't bother.
However:
(1) Kyl-Lieberman simply doesn't give the President authority to invade Iran. In February, Sen. Clinton warned the President that he didn't have this authority and she hasn't changed her mind. If President Bush can misread Kyl-Lieberman so much that he thinks it DOES give him authority, then he can misread the fact that Iran is already a state sponsor of terror. Or the entrails of a bird. Or ... anything.
(2) No matter who wins the primaries, that person has to think about the general election. The electorates aren't the same. The ONLY reason that Sen. Edwards isn't doing making a rightward shift himself is because, after living in Iowa for the last 4 years, he's in a three-way with Senators Clinton and Obama. And in the national polls, he's almost in single digits. It's a matter of first things first for him, not virtue.
(3) Because Kyl-Lieberman doesn't give the President authority to attack Iran in Iran, Senator Clinton isn't "playing with our lives." As she has pointed out, she's just putting some pressure on the Iranians so they'll enter into serious negotiations with us.
(4) RalphB, I couldn't agree more.

You Clinton people were the same ones running around justify her Iraq War vote. You have no more credibility than Hillary or Bush.

The fact is that Hillary has made the right decision. John Edwards is no longer in the senate and therefore should shut his mouth about what goes on in the senate! I support Hillary

ABC- anyone but clinton but not obama. She is such a phony. Wicked witch of the west side of NY. Go RUDY GO
Posted by: chrs | Oct 14, 2007 7:13:24 PM
The Senator from NY is equal to any double speaking politican that I have seen in the last 45 years. She has taken the art of deception futher than the current incompetent the so call "Decider" in the whitehouse. I am appalled that so many fellow "Democrats" fail to realize that this shell game by the Clintons will deliver the same results that we have experience over the past 16 years. Which is people playing the debating game versus being honest and telling us the truth versus playing to those things that divide us. In closing I would like to leave with a thought. It is not the "Economy Stupid" as Clinton would like us to beleive nor is it
George W's senseless war it a simple straight forward issue and the question is.Will the next leader of the "Free World" be capable of working with the countries of the world to bring stability and peace. We do not need an egotist as a leader we need a person who will see the world as it can be and ask with conviction why not and work to find and implement a solution to the issues that divide the world. If not then we are headed towards the next hundred year war and nothing else will matter.

Edwards "...how about if we do tell the truth mode all the time. How about if we say exactly what we believe and stand by that position" is the best statement in the race for President I've heard yet. If presidency candidates are saying everything left and right in hope of "doing what voters want" then how do you know who's telling the truth and being sincere? What do the candidates really want? To simply win the popularity test? Saying and working toward what voters want is important, but believing in the core values of Constitution that our Founders labored for is important. When will candidates who believe in the people and the Constitution instead of big-businesses, money, and a old family name have enough power to make a difference?

Ellen, I agree with your comments. This country is not into dynasty's. We have had a taste of such a model over the past twenty years and we all are living with the results. The worl is not in a better place today than it was twenty years ago. The Clinton' and the Bush family have been one failure after another. We need a course correction in our country and we need it now. We need to end this period of the country being in a downward sprial. Sen Clinton is not the future leader we require to bring our country and the world together.

Edwards is a sorry example of a human being. He took millions from kids and widows. He took up to 75% of their Jury awards and laughed his way to the bank. Shameful. Hillary is such a phony. She and Bill will really run the gov't into the ground. So no to Hillary and Billary. ABC -anyone but clinton, but not obama

Wow, Edwards is really hitting Hillary in the gut. First he exposes the ties of Hillary's strategist, Mark Penn, to Blackwater. Now he is calling Hillary on her Iran vote. This isn't the kind of name calling that Hillary can pooh-pooh away. She will have to answer these criticisms in debate. I don't know how she will be able to do that.

Given his slippery ride DOWN in the polls, common sense should tell Edwards to drop this non-issue. He didn't vote, and he clearly doesn't understand what the vote was about. His message is NOT resonating in the polls.
Regarding the question about when certain candidates will have enough power, the answer is when they can persuade enough people to poll for them, donate money to them and vote for them. It always comes down to the candidate, and Hillary is a clear standout. Go Hillary!

If Sen. Edwards, Sen. Obama, or anybody in the known universe, would be good enough to point out the language in Kyl-Lieberman that authorizes the President to attack Iran in Iran, I'd be grateful.

Clinton has no right running for president.
Posted by: Kelcee | Oct 15, 2007 1:06:15 PM
Pay attention TexBork, the discussion is about ** I r a n ** not Iraq. Making a statement Clinton has no right running for president makes the same sense as Kelcee has no right to post. Both need to amplify their thoughts in order to appear credible.

Yes Ellen, you are paying attention.
This country has growing secessionist movements in twenty-five states due to the mendacious tendencies required to be elected to any office higher than Chief Elephant Dung Sweeper.
The sad fact is while I took an oath to Support and Defend the Constitution of the United States (and the people it represents) Against All Enemies Foreign and Domestic, that country no longer exists.
The "Enemies Domestic" have gutted the Constitution and will say and do anything to get elected. The running dogs of Imperial Privilege (be it Big Business, Old Money, or would-be Dynastic Names) have no conscience except to their masters (which the Common People of the US are not).
The vote on Kyle-Lieberman means nothing due to the fact that the President (seated) has every intention of spreading the conflict into Iran and the President (next) will have a bloody mess on our hands.
In theory Representational Democracy is a good idea, until it gets subverted by the very individuals charged with guiding same. In reality Representational Democracy gives way to Dictatorship before it becomes Empire and finally fails.
As the UF student at the Kerry speech learned, you don't have to do anything wrong to get tasered, all you have to do is ask the wrong question in a fascist state.

I am a big AL GORE fan but now see he does not need to get in the way of 2008. Just let it happen, AL, without you, as the DEM winner will likely want you in the Cabinet or close at hand in some capacity. You might upset the chance for a woman or a black to run for the White House whether they win or not. Frankly, the machinery of elections we have seen in 2000 and 2004 makes nobody confident of the winner and a great conspiracy way to deny the winners standing, in case yours loses. I really want Hillary Or Obama to win, so I can watch the republicans get the nervous twitches about them. Obama would make a great President as his stump speech and questions taken outing in New Hampshire just the other day showed. Bill...er I mean...Hillary would be fine as well and if she runs as the "STRATEGIC CLASS" democrat she will have plenty of opportunity to explain that to us. Biden and Dodd are the CORPORATIST enablers and their states cater to such, right before they bolt to Bermuda or Grand Cayman for better deals. Edwards gave LIDDY DOLE her senate seat from NC and if he would have stayed there we would be in far better shape right now, but he went after the Presidency by using the Senate seat from NC to trampoline him toward. He has been in Iowa giving them money since he ran for Senate in NC. I also have a written letter to Sen.Edwards and his reply, when I tried to stop Cheney from the office of VP in 2000. I had the Constitution on my side and Edwards knew it, that is why a texas judge had to be found to let you know Cheney was from Wyoming and not Texas, though that little tax break homesteading thing in Texas, tells the real tale on that gig. Best stay away this time Al but watch the networks and let us see who they attack this go round...

the dnc version of not ready for prime time is at it again.
if any of them happen to win the big prize, I wonder how the troops are gonna feel to have their C IN C as someone who hates them and doesnt support them?
I can see that people will be leaving the military in droves.

To those who say "Where was Obama" "he didn't vote because he's a coward." Obama announced that he was against it before the vote. So he didn't wait for what the fallout of the vote would be. Plus a lot of the other Democratic candidates didn't vote for it or announced they would have voted agaist it so Hillary's in the wrong!
