Fires in Women's Bathrooms on Capitol Hill
October 03, 2007 9:22 PM
ABC News Jake Tapper and Z. Bryon Wolf Reports: It was a Capitol Hill mystery. There were four fires in Senate office buildings today - three reported between 9 and 10:45 am and a fourth at 2 pm. All of the fires were in women's bathrooms, in trashcans. There were two other fires last week.
That's six fires set on Capitol Hill, all in trashcans in women's bathrooms.
A coincidence?
One Capitol Hill police officer told ABC News "they think it's a prankster but you can never be too sure." Capitol Police spokeswoman Lt. Kimberly Schneider will not speculate as to motive. "A fire's a fire," she says, refusing to downplay it. "A small fire can easily turn into a big fire."
Capitol Police have, according to one officer, added patrols of cops to inspect the bathrooms periodically. They have not revealed what ingredients were used to start the fires
All of the fires were small, and were put out quickly. There appeared to be no danger to Senators or staffers. All of the fires were in bathrooms in the Dirksen and Hart Senate Office buildings. . Spokeswoman Sergeant Kimberly Schneider called the matter "an ongoing investigation" and said in a paper statement "there are no viable lookouts to provide at this time."
