"Flower Power Pork" for Woodstock Museum Fails in the Senate
October 18, 2007 7:15 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: New York Democrats Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer had slipped $1 million into the Labor-HHS appropriations bill for a performing arts center at the museum on the site of the 1969 Woodstock festival. But the earmark failed.
Bob Novak brought attention to the earmark in his column today, describing it as "Flower Power Pork".
Republican Senators Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Jon Kyl of Arizona offered an amendment to the bill that would strip the money. Democrats tried to table the amendment, but 52 Senators, including 5 Democrats, voted to keep the amendment on the floor. It was then passed by voice vote.
Coburn voiced his outrage. "I'm part of the hippie generation," he said. "...the question is, should this be a priority for this body over the priority of women and children, of maternal child health, which isn't funded adequately in this country?
Schumer defended the museum saying it was much more than a tribute to Woodstock, it was a tribute to the World War II period.

I like rock-n-roll and partying as much as anybody else, but Woodstock was a drug fest, right? It was a drug fest with great rock-n-roll artists.
We tout it because it was a peaceful gathering of a million hippies? What exactly else, besides that, was accomplished?
We fund million dollar museums for this?

Even a blind squrrel gets an acorn once in a while. This idiotic idea met the fate it desrved. So Hillary is so interested in the "children" is she? To a socilaist, there is money for every stupid idea one of them comes up with.

The Western and Upstate New York regions which Senator Clinton represents are economically depressed and have been for a long time under her watch. Would not a million dollars wisely be spent on helping the region economically? If Western and Upstate New York is Senator Clinton's idea of economic prosperity, then we will get what we asked for.

Typical. It's a slow Friday. ABC puts up this startling story about horrible "corruption" to the tune of $1M, appends the word "Clinton," and every person whose vision turns red and hazy at the mere mention of the name comes through with the site traffic.

Museums commemorating important local events? Designed to lure tourists who then spend money in "Upstate New York regions [that] are economically depressed," thus creating new jobs and "helping the region economically"? Why ... that's NEVER been been tried before. But you've got to give the lady credit for a wild imagination.

I have the answer for Hillary and the state of New York. The state needs consider other options to do this for there wonderful state and charge a fee for all the tourist and visitors. SEE as I said before I have many great idea's. So the states of NY should start doing some marketting get some dances going or concerts to raise the money for this museaum. Thank you

This is History and we need to keep it

Dawn:
No need to be an apologist for Senator Clinton and the NY State's poor leadership. Working at museums and tourist attractions are not the wages of good paying jobs to support working families in Upstate. Cost of living and NY State taxes are a tough deal. In all fairness to Senator Clinton, she has supported the expenditures of Federal monies on more significant investments like nanotechnology in Upstate but the Woodstock Museum falls in the category of noise and waste in micro-economic terms.

Thank you ABC for this story. I was definitely going to vote for her, but now I know better!

People this shows you just where Hillary is...back in the 60's where she was at Yale living with her husband and not married!

I'm well aware of how hard Sen. Clinton has worked to increase economic development in all areas of New York, including upstate.
Museums don't just improve the economics of an area by the direct hire of employees. As I wrote, tourists who visit museums also patronize businesses in the area. This increased income flow helps small businesses hire more employees who spend more money in the area, thus creating the wherewithal to expand old businesses and open new ones and so on.
For example, my family visited Seneca Falls so we could get a look at the site of the Seneca Falls Convention and the Women's Rights Museum there. Then we bought gas in the area and visited a local confectioner's. After a few hours exploring, we lunched at a local restaurant. Now maybe you think our afternoon was "noise and waste," but the people whose businesses we patronized seemed happy to have us.
Also, how much waste could there be in an earmark totaling all of $1M?

I wasn't going to vote for Hillary noway. But if I had figure to vote for her. After I read this, there is no way that I would vote for Hillary Clinton.

The failure of the earmark speaks for itself. This approach of commemorating important events and people along with earmarks takes up about one third of Congressional docket. This why Congress is called the broken branch of government, and this is why I will not vote for any member of Congress for President. If Senator Clinton and Senator Schumer want to show they are "Leaders" on a national level perhaps the should pursue reform of the institution they represent for the American taxpayer.
