Fred Thompson's 'Challenge'

ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: Fred Thompson is treading on Rudy Giuliani's turf.

On Monday night, Thompson, R-Tenn., addresses the New York Conservative party and holds a pair of fundraisers, one of which was organized by former Senator Al D'Amato, R-N.Y., (aka 'Senator Pothole'), who also helped coach Thompson for his first presidential debate

In excerpts of his speech to New York conservatives, the actor turned presidential contender advocates for "smaller government, lower taxes, less regulation, and conservative judges."

"Some think the way to beat the Democrats in November is to be more like them," Thompson will tell the crowd, "I could not disagree more. I believe that conservatives beat liberals only when we challenge their outdated positions, not embrace them."

While he does not name Giuliani specifically in the excerpts of his speech made available by his campaign, Thompson's comments are expected to allude to Giuliani's political past.

In 1994, Giuliani crossed party lines and endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mario Cuomo, rather than supporting Republican George Pataki.

"With me, what you see is what you get. I was a proud conservative yesterday, I remain one today, and I will be one tomorrow," Thompson states in excerpts of his speech.

Thompson's remarks come at a time when the Republican nomination race is heating up.  With no clear favorite in the first primary state of New Hampshire, former Governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass., has said he's the only candidate who represents "the Republican wing of the Republican party."

Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., took issue with those comments in an interview on "Good Morning America" (watch it here), and Thompson's speech before New York conservatives will likely only add fuel to the spreading Republican fire.

Fred Thompson is not a social conservative. On social policy he is a libertarian like Ron Paul.

Thompson is against constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and he is also against a constitutional amendment banning abortion.

That's why James Dobson and so many other social conservatives have turned against him.

Fred is not against a constitutional amendment banning abortion. He would uphold it. He is not in favor of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages. James Dobson will never see in his time or in any other time see an amendment to ban gay marriages passed in the USA....He might as well get used to it and quit being so stubborn!

I am proud of you ABC for getting something on on FRED! But I must admit that CNN did it better!

America does not need an actor who can follow the script of the Council on Foreign Relations or the new world order. America needs Ron Paul.

Thompson is quickly becoming the joke of the political season. The longed for "savior" of the Republican base turns out to be bumbling, disorganized, lazy fool. Good fodder for Saturday Night Live skits.
