Hillary Clinton's Birthday Bash

October 26, 2007 7:53 AM

ABC News' Kate Snow and Eloise Harper Report: "Happy Birthday Mrs. President" was the final song of the night, sung by Elvis Costello.

They sure know how to throw a birthday party.  The Clintons-- Hillary, Bill and even Chelsea-- spent Thursday night at New York's famed Beacon Theater surrounded by 3,000 of their closest friends.

Well maybe they weren't all "friends" per se, but they did give Clinton a present.  The birthday bash raised more than one and a half million for Clinton's campaign.

After performances by the Wallflowers and Elvis Costello, Bill Clinton introduced his wife.  On the eve of her 60th birthday he said Senator Clinton is "still looking I think very beautiful".

"She was just 23 when we met," Bill Clinton said, "Poor child didn't know any better."

Joined on stage by Chelsea, Clinton said "We love you and I'm so proud of you. Happy birthday"

Senator Clinton then thanked her family for their support and love.

"For me, it is a great honor and an extraordinarily humbling experience to think that I could be the first woman President of the United States," she told the crowd.

Striking themes from her standard stump speech, Sen. Clinton talked briefly about health care, fighting global warming and education.

She was the only speaker who never mentioned the fact that she turns 60 on Friday.

"I always thought it was impolite to mention a lady's age," Elvis Costello chuckled at one point.

Clearly supportive of Clinton, the British rocker called the candidate "someone who is gonna bring back the music to the White House."

Costello finished his set with an old song written, appropriately, in Hope, Arkansas.  He followed that with his classic- "Allison".

Costello also played a couple of duets with the Wallflowers, whose lead singer is Jakob Dylan, son of legend Bob Dylan.  (Their final song together: "What's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding?")

President Clinton said his wife's campaign is "not so much for the old rockers but for the new ones"

But many in the crowd seemed more familiar with the senior Dylan's music catalog.

Comedian Billy Crystal was the emcee for the night, entertaining the crowd with quips like--"Giuliani just retracted the Red Sox thing. He's gonna be for Cleveland now."

Hillary Clinton jumped on that theme later.  In an obvious reference to Rudy Giuliani's new-found support for the Red Sox Clinton said-- "I have been a fan and I remain a fan of the NY Yankees. No changes!"

Hallary and all the other candidates should be ashamed. What a waste of money. We have homeless people in this country, people who don't have the money to pay their heating bills this winter, people who can't feed their families because they are trying to make ends met on $7.00 an hour wage. There are so many people and good programs that could benefit from all this money, but I guess buying a President costs BIG MONEY and SCREW the American People. SCREW the real issues that the Amercian People face everyday. this whole campaign is a joke.

My wish is for you to become madam President! Happy Birthday madam President! My 2nd wish is for B. Obama fo be your Vice-President. With you, we get two Presidents in the White House. I consider the ticket- "the new mod squad." Bless you on your Birthday wishes and mine! Teri

I want to know more about the Woodstock museum.

yes, I quite agree, no one is allowed to have a festive birthday part - how dare she! George Bush has spent more time on vacation than any other President in the history of the Office. It's a good thing there isn't much going on in the world ... Insted, of noting that; however, let us take a moment to criticize Hillary Clinton for having a 60th birthday party. Fair and balanced, happy birthday indeed.

Talking about a joke, does anyone else see that this whole republican party and this administration is a joke. This U.S.has become a laughing matter to other countries.
Happy birthday, Madam President.

When will you people see that she is a con artist.. Her doings will be far worst then any other president..

Clinton and Bush the Three Card Monty of American Politics. A vote for Hillary is a vote for the same power elite that has ruled and ruined this country for the last count them 16 years.

I agree, what a waste of money needed for other projects. They most expect something in return. Another case where the people with big bucks want us to do as they say, not what they do. Big houses, limos etc.

That women is unbelievable, first such extravagance, and to martyre such an evil person. you can even hear it in her voice I wouldnt vote for her no matter what party she is with. She will be the end of the United States, and anything left of it that still moral.

Not ranting at someone elses comments, just stating facts. I am 68 years old. I've voted in every election since I turned 21. I believe it is not only my right to vote but my duty. This election has however severely tainted my ideals. I don't see anyone to vote for this time around. Everywhere you look is more disgusting waste and unbelievable self-rightousness. I'm actually glad to be getting so old I might not have to see the concequences of this fiasco. I'm sorry for my children, grand-children and great grandchildren, but right now I see no way out at all.

I want to know more about the Peter Paul Stan Lee election fraud lawsuit against Hillary and why it is being stifled in the courts?

Posted by: Gar Mowery | Oct 26, 2007 12:48:55 PM

she just makes me want to puke.

they don't get any phonier.

Over 51 % of Americans who are legal voters say they will never vote for Hillary; so all this money being thrown at her is a waste, all this media hype (especially by ABC News) is a waste. Keep throwing money away you Dems, but don't complain about poor people and no money for health care as you are wasting millions on a campaign that will not win. Money that could be used for people who need it.

What much ado about nothing. The article says that she RAISED over 1.5 million from the party, not spent 1.5 million the party itself! Secondly, one and a half million doesn't compare to the trillions spent on the Iraq war, which has served no positive purpose whatsoever. The only result of it is that over 3000 american troops and tens of thousands of Iraqis have died. And was still spending many billions in Iraq simply because of the ego and arrogance of one evil man, George Bush! You people bashing hillary I'm sure are the ones condoning Bush with open arms I'm sure. Idiots.

Jason shame on you name calling a typical Dem. sorry your so bitter but Im telling right now your lady Clinton is a scandal indisguise and has more skeletons in her closet then you can imagine. And with no self respect of her own how will she respect our country or get respect from others. Im not Bush supporter but I cant support the Anti Christ Hillary

Did Stan Lee contribute, lol.....

I am a Democrat and I can't stand this woman. Bill Richardson is my first choice, but I'm for any Democrat except Hillary - she CAN'T win.

Posted by: Mitchel Huber | Oct 26, 2007 11:20:58 PM

Happy birthday to you Mrs. President. I love all the posters that are afraid of a strong woman in the White House. The GOP has been demonizing Hillary for so long that even some of the Dems believe them. Don’t believe the Bushies - they’re just afraid because they know she can win. I want more of the Clinton years - peace and prosperity.

All of her scandals, her illegal donors, her wiretapping, and her vote to invade Iraq, brings shame on our country, our Democratic party, and our gender. There is NO way that I will vote for her, nor will she ever be a 'role model' for my young daughter.

Posted by: Dora | Oct 27, 2007 2:28:31 PM

Hillary agree's with the Iraq war too! She has said she will not pull our troops out she is no different than Bush and her and Bill have sold us out to China and are still doing so where do you think she has raised so much money? If America votes for her we will really be in trouble. Not to mention how America forgets how childish the Clintons were when they had to leave the Whitehouse they tore things up as they left! And yes there are many hungry Americans making 7.00 an hour and not able to make it on that and she does not care! She is not for Americans she is not for securing the borders and makeing sure business do not hire Illegals so we Americans do not have to work for 7.00 an hour!!!! The pay rate has gone down because they can hire illegals because Congress (Hillary) will not act on this.

All this anti-Hillary bashing is so funny, because it's so unfounded. She rocks. I hope she wins, cause she seems to be the only one that has TRIED to change healthcare. Others talk about her mistakes, but at least she TRIED. The others are all talk and NO ACTION. She is a smart, strong woman. Men are AfRAID of her. LOL. GO HILLARY 08

Posted by: m | Oct 29, 2007 7:51:11 AM

Ohh, one more thing. I find it sickening that all you people that hate her would rather have an ultra conservative repub win, then her, even though the only really bad thing you can pin on her or her husband is a failed attempt to change healthcare and the affairs. Know what? Most politicians are probably guilty of that. The fact that she overcame it, shows her strength. You people are pathetic and weak.

Posted by: m | Oct 29, 2007 7:54:51 AM

Hillary is no different than many candidates in the past. She knows what the polls say, and will change like the wind to accomodate the polls, and try to appeal to the people. If we say she should smile more, laugh more, we will get the same on her next interview. She is so programmed into what people are saying, but she is not herself, and is not consistent, and does change her words, actions, on the advice of her advisors. She reminds me of a chameleon.

Read The Extreme Makeover of Hillary (Rodham) Clinton to find out how calculating Hillary really is. She would tax and spend us into oblivion given half a chance. She is hopelessly hooked on power and would bring the US ripping back to the 8 years in history we would most like to forget (unless she locks Bill out of the White House)! Thank goodness we remember how we held our breath until the Clintons were GONE and the American people could regain respect for the Presidency.

Posted by: linday | Oct 29, 2007 12:39:25 PM

shame on you all... what about the kids you wanted to provide health insurance for,,, this lavish affair, should have been done a much smaller scale like family and friends only, the way it's done in most american homes.... i also agree, a vote for hilliary is a vote for unfaithful bill.
