McCain Wins Thompson Support in N.H.

ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: Saying that he would do everything in his power to keep New Hampshire's primary the first in the nation if he were to win the Republican Party nomination, Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., filed his paperwork Tuesday to officially get on the ballot in the Granite State.

"It's a great honor to have the opportunity again to file the papers for my candidacy," McCain said, "fully aware of the many great Americans who have done the same thing for years in the past."

McCain handed over his signed forms, and a check for $1,000, the filing fee to get on the ballot.

McCain has frequently spoken about the need for the first three states –- Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina –- to maintain in their positions at the beginning of the nominating process.

"It's not fair to the voters to crowd the primaries," McCain said.

McCain's official entry into the race in New Hampshire came on the same day his campaign announced a new member of the leadership team in New Hampshire. Dan Hughes joined McCain as a statewide campaign vice chair, after having worked for the presidential campaign of former Senator Fred Thompson, R-Tenn.

Hughes told ABC News that he left Thompson because he felt they were not competing strongly enough in New Hampshire.

"It became obvious …they were running more of a token campaign," Hughes said of Thompson's New Hampshire operation. "And I didn't want to be the token chairman of a token campaign."
