Obama: Faith "Plays Every Role"
October 07, 2007 4:16 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Amid shouts of "Hallelujah" and "Amen" Senator Barack Obama told the story of the development of his personal faith.
Speaking to a crowd of nearly 5,000 at the Redemption World Outreach Center in Greenville, South Carolina, Obama spoke about being raised without a church. It wasn’t until after college that he got his first blush of organized religion.
"I cast about after college to see how I could participate in building God’s kingdom. Although I didn’t know that’s what it was at the time. I just wanted to create a more just society," the Senator admitted.
Working with churches as a community organizer in the South Side of Chicago, Obama joked that he was constantly asked by the pastors what congregation he was a member of, "I would hem and I would haw and I’d make excuses because I realty didn’t know where I belonged. I didn’t really have a church home."
After three years working with the ministries in the communities Obama says, "I discovered that God works in mysterious ways. I thought I was helping their people out they were helping me. I thought I was coming to save a community but in fact I was the one who was being saved."
It was this relationship that led to the definition of Obama’s personal religion of Christianity, "Through that interaction with the church I accepted Jesus Christ in my life."
The formation of that religion and faith is one that Obama admits he leans on in the challenge of running for president, "Sometimes this is a tough road being in politics, not only what other people can do to you, but to what you can do to yourself."
Saying his faith, on that tough road, plays every role, "It’s what keeps me grounded, what keeps my eyes set on to the greatest heights. What propels me to do what I do and when I get down its what lifts me up."
Pledging to help infuse the government with the same spirit of charity and love that the church brings him, the Senator preached to the South Carolina congregation, "I can be an instrument of God they same way all of you are."

I see that he has said he has accepted Jesus Christ into his life. Ok... I would wait to see the fruits of that experience which cannot only be determined by his political affiliations or aspirations.

does anyone review the tax status of these churches like they did in the 80's against republican electioneering?

Oh, I didnt know he was so religious. But I'll only believe him about his religion if he shakes hands with Al Sharpton.

I think Obama should respect the separation of church and state and stop politicing in churches. His church talks make me very wary of him.

IT's possible that this LIAR is the ANTI-CHRIST. He certainly ISN'T CHRISTIAN. And before some brain dead lib pipes in about, 'who are you to judge", my name is Vincent and I WAS TOLD TO JUDGE A MAN BY HIS FRUITS. So expand your lack of knowledge and read the WHOLE new testament, instead of the ONE scripture that liberals know by heart. THis man is such an ABOMINABLE LIAR that he will fool , if possible, the very elect. But WE are NOT fooled. NO CHILD OF GOD supports ABORTION because GOD SAID that HE put that LIFE in that WOMB (Jeremiah 1:5). Yet this waste VOTED TO KILL BABIES THAT SURVIVE ABORTIONS rather than give them MEDICAL CARE! This waste of life, supports SODOMIC "MARRIAGES", thereby placing the entire nation endanger since the sin of sodomy is the ONLY SIN that God has LEVELED A CITY BECAUSE OF! Yet this moron supports it! Yeah, he's Christian, and so is the devil, if just "saying so", makes it so!

Ah, Vincent. As I read your tirade, I knew it was written by a man. An unforgiving man. Jesus may have been angry and emptied the temple of the money-changers, Shame on you. You know, you are absolutely correct that too many woman use abortion as a readily available form of birth control. The fact that a child is inconvenient or unaffordable, or imperfect, is no reason for abortion. That absolutely should be illegal. However, dear Vincent, a woman should not be forced to carry and nurture the seed of incest or rape, or complete the pregnancy if her life is at stake (and the law should be changed to allow only these instances). Put yourself in the woman's shoes, Vincent. That unborn child (yes, it is a child at conception)will absolutely be taken into God's loving arms, perfect or imperfect as it may be. The mother, whose anguish surely far supercedes your anger, will find forgiveness in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father, if her heart is pure. The sin, dear Vincent, lies with those who use this law to protect and cover their own sins. Without this law, abortions WILL continue illegally. Fetuses will be dragged out with bent hangers. Compassionate doctors will risk their professional status, and the unlawful doctors will make a killing -- literally and figuratively. Why not use your energy to pray for those women who must face the terrible decision of abortion. I am not asking you to support abortion clinics. I absolutely do not. But I am asking you to have compassion for the woman who has an unwanted pregnancy through rape or incest. I don't know where Obama's head is on this subject, but I do know that we must have the law to protect innocent, violated women, or those too ill to carry a child. And, Vincent, face it, not all unwanted children get adopted. Should the unwanted child pay for the sins of the perpetrator all of its life? Get your head out of the muck and take a clearer look at this issue. The law needs amending, not abolishing.
You could have said the same thing more responsibly and less hatefully. Hate solves nothing. It only hurts you in the long run, and never promotes healing. And quoting scripture in hate convinces no one. Jesus came in love because of all the hate in the world..

So, for the record, here's how this would have gone if Giuliani had done this.
1) NYT front page article calling violation of the Church's tax-exempt rules, excessive mockery of religion, and the specifics of what was said.
2) Parroting of this (especially the violation of the no-politics in church rules, and the mockery).
3) Investigations into the Church to revoke their tax exempt policies, fines for Giuliani, and general insults to the other Republican candidates.
But this is Obama, and he's from the ever-protected party of double-standards and therefore is allowed to ignore the rules as he wishes while being protected by the Mainstream media (no, ABC's Blog doesn't carry the same weight as ABC News, or the NYT... sorry).
So, expect to see this story buried and/or ignored; and if/when covered don't expect to see any mention of the Church's tax exempt status, or any editorializing of Obama's words.
And if a Republican candidate is foolish enough to follow suit, expect all of my above points to be covered in order.

Vincent: What exactly is "the ONE scripture that liberals know by heart".
Carol: I share your sentiments, and I have compassion for women who became pregnant through rape or incest, but surely you realize that this is a very rare event and a small part of the abortion debate. And if an unborn child is indeed a child, why is it OK to kill it just because of the way it was conceived? The rape or incest was not the child's fault. I agree on practical grounds that abortion can't be outlawed or women would return to dangerous illegal abortions, but how much more loving a "choice" would it be for the rape victim to carry the baby to term and then relinquish it for adoption? That is what the birth mother of my daughter did, and we are so grateful for that.
Gekkobear: You are absolutely correct.

Beautifully said Carol -- and I suppose Vincent with all his anger calls himself a Good Christian --

You should be ashamed of yourself! That was the most Un-Christlike diatribe imaginable. Your post reminds me more of the Scribes and Pharasees than of our beloved and compassionate Jesus. You appear to be more of a Parrot for the Republican party than a representative for Christ.
I can feel your passion for the Word, but your actions are hardly Fruits of the Spirit. Ask yourself truthfully, what are the Fruits that Jesus showed in his life in the flesh? Did he not show compassion and understanding to all... even to those who conspired to have him murdered... even to the thief on the cross? Jesus offered hope to the downtrodden, he ministered to the sick, he gave comfort to the poor and the forgotten.
Barack Obama, rather than going to wall street for material wealth instead went to work with the poor and downtrodden in community service. He offers Hope to the common and forgotten man and woman and child. The Fruits of the Spirit are not shown forth in empty Words... neither are they revealed in the repetition of theological doctrines.
Rather than attempting to slander others because their Faith may appear different than yours, I Urge you to look after your Own Faith dear friend.

Why is everyone wanting to review the tax status of my church all of a sudden? There was no campaigning going on at all, Senator Obama was allowed to greet the congregation and basically gave his testimony. His "kingdom building" comments were in reference to using the ministries in our church to do God's work (I volunteer in one of the ministries,) and have been taken completely out of context.
Besides, nobody was asking to review our tax free status when a Republican Senator, Governor, and Lieutenant Governor all got to greet the congregation last year. They weren't allowed to campaign then either.
Oh, and I defend him as a Republican who has voted for only two Democrats in 20 years of voting (every election,) and don't plan to vote for the good Senator, though I will pray for him.
Peace, y'all.

I believe Obama is a Christian. His testimony is true. His family is beautiful. I personaly feel the worse judgemental people are conservative Christians. They, not all, forget they have a past-they are not perfect-and the scripture about "judge not less ye be judged" is not in their Bible. I say let God be the judge. We prayed that God's will be done and who are we to say it wasn't. If people have an issue about Obama's christian faith then take it up with God. I have faith that God's will was done and I look forward to a better United States in the next years to come. I am in full support of President Obama and I am a Christian.

Without God permitting the President cannot be elected, If you belive God is in absolute control then you dont have any right ( authority ) to speak against the one God has allowed to Govern.Rather pray for him so that the Wisdom of God will increase upon him and will result in blessing your nation and the nations of the world.
Thats what all Christians are called to do.
