Obama Jokes with Leno

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: When Senator Obama took the hot seat next to Jay Leno on the “Tonight Show,” mum was definitely not the word on all things Clinton.

Obama responded to recent poll numbers which show Senator Clinton in the lead, "Hillary is not he first politician in Washington to declare 'Mission Accomplished' a little too soon," but said that he’s still got a long way to go to Election Day.

Bill Clinton was also brought into the fray. While admitting President Clinton is a great strategist who "no doubt helps Hillary's campaign" Obama joked that he’d bet on his wife in a debate between the two spouses, "My wife is no slouch, if there was a debate between Michelle and Bill, I'm putting my money on my girl."

Clintons aside, Obama also joked about the current administration, responding to news that he is an eighth cousin of Vice President Cheney's.

Saying he's "okay" with it, he laughed, "I don't want to be invited to the family hunting party," referencing Cheney's hunting accident where he accidentally shot a fellow hunter.

Obama also pinpointed another person in the administration when asked about the recent criticism of why he hasn't been wearing a flag pin, "The truth is that I wore a pin right after 9/11, and when I took it off I lost it, and I didn’t replace it," and added that a lot of politicians wear the pin and then "act is a real unpatriotic manner, like Attorney General Gonzales wearing the flag pin the whole time he was shredding the constitution."

Commenting about Bush, but putting joking aside on a serious manner, Obama responded to the use of word choice by the President of "World War III" when referring to the threats of a war Iran.

"Using language like that ... it alienates the rest of the world. I hope the President will be a little more sober and responsible in the language he uses because this is not helpful."

Senator Obama, declaring himself the underdog, "Because with a name like Barack Obama you're always the underdog," heads to Nevada this week for campaigning in the early state.

The grinning candidate quipped though, "When you're running for president what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas."

Does this guy have an original thought that actually makes sense? He took that hunting joke from the Mrning radio Djs and made it his own. He talks about Gonzales shredding the constitution and he's not ask any follow up like what the heck do you mean. Do you have any proof? This inept guy can't get out of his own way. He better watch out his campaign bus is about to run HIM over. We got to do better than this guy. ABC-anyone but Clinto, but NOT Obama

Gonzales defied the constitution and any kind of ethical standard when he attempted to get a sedated and bedridden John Ashcroft to sign off on blatantly unconstitutional surveillance of U.S. citizens. And, yes, there is documented proof. I believe that was what Senator Obama was referring to, my friend Dean O...

Dean O - FACT: Alberto Gonzales tried to pressure Attorney General John Ashcroft to overturn a ruling by the Justice Department that the program was illegal. “On the night of March 10, 2004, as Attorney General John D. Ashcroft lay ill in an intensive-care unit, his deputy, James B. Comey, received an urgent call. White House Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales and President Bush's chief of staff, Andrew H. Card Jr., were on their way to the hospital to persuade Ashcroft to reauthorize Bush's domestic surveillance program, which the Justice Department had just determined was illegal. In vivid testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, Comey said he alerted FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III and raced, sirens blaring, to join Ashcroft in his hospital room, arriving minutes before Gonzales and Card. Ashcroft, summoning the strength to lift his head and speak, refused to sign the papers they had brought. Gonzales and Card, who had never acknowledged Comey's presence in the room, turned and left.” (Washington Post, 5/16/07)

FACT: Gonzales refused to comment on testimony regarding a highly unusual visit he paid to the hospital bedside of Attorney General Ashcroft.

QUESTION: Mr. Attorney General, last month, Jim Comey testified about a visit you and Andy Card made to John Ashcroft’s hospital bed. Can you tell us your side of the story? Why were you there? And did Mr. Comey testify truthfully about it? Did he remember it correctly?

GONZALES: Mr. Comey’s testimony related to a highly classified program which the president confirmed to the American people sometime ago. And, because it’s a highly classified program, I’m not going to comment on his testimony. (Press Conference, 6/5/07)
You are obviously Republican and that is okay, I too understand the presence of conservatism but with this administration there is much lacking. I love my country and our government. It's not that I hate Republicans because there are many Republicans that have a not lost their way, it's that I question our President's decision making process, his instability in foreign countries, the cost of the Iraq war and the division he has initiated in this country in such a short time span. He has divided this country like no other President in the past. I like Obama's fresh ideas and his strong character although I honestly believe it is a long shot for his Presidency. It's worth every effort - our country needs someone that has not lost their way and is for the People not only for their own agenda.

Barack again shows why he has the mettle and judgement to be President. To anyone who says he is too inexperienced, he has more experience than Clinton, Romeny, Guiliani and Edwards. If you want the most experienced, vote for Biden.

P.S. If you resort to name calling and race baiting, then you are sorely missing the obvious: Barack is going to be President.

I actually think that Hillary Clinton will be the next President, but I like Obama and would vote for him if he made it to the general election. Anybody but Bush..........

I admire her will, but I cannot see Hillary Clinton carrying more than NY, Cal, Ill, Penn, and Ohio. I think if she is the nominee, it may be a one-sided rout for some dopey Republican

As an Iowan I have had the chance to see Hillary, Barack, Edwards, Richardson, Biden and Dodd in person and ask them questions, thus not having to rely on Jay Leno, AND see their campaign organization. I am lucky.

Like many Democrats I want the war to end now and want universal and affordable health care and a president who can make a reasonable and passionate approach to both.

I have been going to the caucuses for several decades and have felt the "tenor" of Iowa in many political seasons.

Barack Obama is no rock star but he may be as important as Lincoln. His authenticity and smarts are matched by a campaign which is tireless and expansive as any I have ever seen. Polls about the caucus in Iowa are meaningless, whether local or national. the situation is still too changeable. I will say that I have never seen Iowa potential caucus goers so serious about their decision and reflective about what a "good" president would look like. For me, he looks like Senator Barack Obama.

PJ, Any Democrat with a competent campaign will;l probably take the Presidency. Look at John Kerry. One of the worst candidates I've seen and he still almost won.

Hillary will be competent. But I think we have had enough of the Bush and Clinton clans. I'd love to see Obama, maybe with Richardson as a VP or the opposite. Richardson is no rock star but he is competent and VERY experienced.

You know guys...I'm sure you know...I saw a mention to "dopey Republican"s. I agree. This batch of republicans is very dopey. Except for Ron Paul. Here's a guy who VOTED AGAINST THE WAR!! He voted against it in the beginning, and he's against still now. Register and vote republican. Hope for America. Ron Paul.

I agree with Dean O. Does this guy have any thoughts of his own that aren't written by a veteran speech writer or said by someone else in the media? Everyone has ran that hunting joke across their lips.

Obama has not shown himself to be anything but a pretty boy. Has he had an original idea about how to solve any of our problems?

I am a moderate (liberal for all you folks who think there are ONLY 2 sides) but I will not vote for him or Hillary because of the social programs they want the government to create.

Seriously obama is stupid... i hope he dosent win for president because if he was a real american he would be wearing a pin of the flag just like every political person does. they would not be making excuses as to why they do not have one.. and besides that he dosent but his hand over his heart for the pledge so what does that show you..

Posted by: bob | Mar 20, 2008 10:49:53 PM

Obama has to be a joke or something. He has all these celebrities with him and I think he might win but I don't want him too. If he does win the election, we will never have a woman president. And think about it, wouldn't it feel weird to have a black man in a white house? VOTE 4 HILLARY!!
