Obama Uses "I" Word: Inevitable

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: The word 'inevitable' has been swirling around the campaign trail recently, as Senator Barack Obama's top opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton, is being dubbed by some as the inevitable candidate.  But, the Obama campaign has been working hard to make sure there is a question mark behind that ten letter word, saying, don't count your chickens - or your votes – before they are cast.

"Hillary is not the first politician in Washington to declare 'Mission Accomplished' a little too soon," Obama told Jay Leno while appearing on his show Wednesday night. The Senator also referenced what he called the "President Dean" situation in the last presidential campaign, implying just as Howard Dean, once the thought to be the inevitable nominee, lost his front-runner status to Senator John Kerry, Obama is posturing for a similar turn of events.

Following his late-night appearance, Obama sent out an email to supporters highlighting his comments, with the subject line reading, "Inevitable?"

And just this week, Michelle Obama also joined in on the argument.  "Nothing is inevitable," she told the London Sunday Times.  "The 'inevitable' candidate has not raised the most money and doesn't have the biggest base of donors…so where's the 'inevitability?'"

Clinton, also careful not to drum up the beat of inevitability, stated recently at a campaign stop in Des Moines, "I pay absolutely no attention to what any poll says or what any pundit on TV says...Nobody has come to a caucus yet, nobody has cast a vote yet."
