Paul Raises Jaw-Dropping $5 Million

October 03, 2007 1:16 PM

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: It dominated headlines yesterday when Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, announced her campaign juggernaut had outpaced all rivals in the campaign fundraising horse race with a $27 million haul in the third quarter.

Today's fundraising announcement by Rep. Ron Paul, the Republican Libertarian ob-gyn from Texas, doesn't involve quite as much money, but is downright jaw-dropping.

His campaign is revealing today that in the 3rd quarter Paul raised $5,080,000. This is more than double his 2nd quarter figure of $2.4 million and no small sum for an insurgent campaign.

Comparatively, Paul's Q3 figure is five times what was raised in the same period by GOP rival former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who is often given a better chance at the party nomination by political pundits. It puts Paul in the same fundraising neighborhood as top-tier Republican candidates like Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Paul has become the buzz candidate with his hearty and vocal supporters, omnipresent on the Internet and at campaign events. But Paul's strict Libertarianism -- he is as vocal in his opposition to the Iraq war as he is in his support for the 2nd Amendment -- could hurt him with the GOP base who will ultimately choose the Republican nominee.

ABC's affiliate in Manchester, New Hampshire caught Paul at the airport Wednesday.  To watch Paul's reaction to his third quarter fundraising success, click HERE.

Good job Dr Paul!! And thank you ABC for reporting it so fairly.

The momentum is on our side grassroots. Now it's time for us to take our Internet Army offline and WIN the election. Let's start paying attention to the one-on-one of neighborhood canvassing, neighborhood organizing - and expand the donor base.

Tell your real-world neighbors about Ron Paul. If they need to switch parties to vote for RP, then let them know how. Expanding the base of the GOP - and being able to beat the Dems - by expounding traditional solid GOP beliefs (certainly more than Guiliani) - is the way that Ron Paul will win the support of the existing GOP base. And Dr Paul is the only candidate who can do that.

OMG! omgomgomgomg! Great work everyone! This is amazing news!

Ron Paul is going to embarass a lot of "mainstream" Republicans.

Posted by: Sean O'Brien | Oct 3, 2007 1:40:29 PM

Can we finally put him in the top-tier? The tier stuff is ridiculous. He's got more cash on hand then everyone except Giuliani!!! And he's got far more grassroots support.

Ron Paul will win this race, there is no doubt anymore!

Here's an example of why Ron isn't polling higher. This is a paraphrase of the Rassmussen tele-polling script:

So check out Rassmussen's "scientific" methodology... Here's a paraphrase of his script:

"For Rudy Giuliani Press 1
For Fred Thompson Press 2
For Mitt Romney, Press 3
For John McCain, Press 4
For Mike Huckabee, Press 5
For a list of other candidates, Press 6"

Nice and scientific.

It's only jaw-dropping to ABC News because their political analysts are out of touch with what is going on in the country.

No other candidate has independent groups of people creating home-made signs, canvassing neighborhoods, creating their own donation programs, and showing up in force at state and country straw polls-- Which Ron Paul either wins or places high in.

Ron Paul actually has more state and county straw poll wins that the Frudy McRomson clones ABC News and other networks keep saying are our only choices.

I would suggest ABC News give a lot more coverage to Ron Paul. It gives more credibility to your network-- because right now, you look out of touch.

We are a mighty train gaining steam by the day!!!!!!!!!

Paul's cash on hand will be even higher then that because, he is a true conservative when it comes to money and in no way, blew away the 3 plus million he had on hand going into Q3.

Why would a party, whose traditons have been for the second ammendment and against intervention wars, find Pauls support for the second ammendment rights and non interventionism hurtful?

That comment smells afoul of something rotten happening within the GOP if that were to be true.

What will hurt if not finish the Republican party is putting in a Constitutional law breaking, public ignoring, war mongering, spend thrift. They will looose if they do that.

70% Americans want out of this war. The Second Ammendment is a Law of the land and a legal right for self protection. I would be suspicious of the motives of anyone wanting to take that right away from us. So much money has been spent, Congress had to raise the borrowing credit limit to meet Bush's out of control spending budgets.

Without Paul at the helm to straighten the parties direction out, the Republicans are toast!

Viva the rEVOLution. Long Live Ron Paul, his supporters and their message of freedom, liberty and prosperity.

How the heck is Hannity going to explain over $5,000,000 in donations?

Even a hack like Hannity can't claim that kind of money came from "a few internet spammers."

Gee, maybe Ron Paul's ideas on small government and freedom really are popular, despite the best efforts of Fox News and others to pretend that they aren't...

Posted by: James Blund | Oct 3, 2007 1:53:33 PM

For what it's worth, "Libertarianism" just means that you favor "Libery" over "Socialism." It's not the bad word that the media tries to make it out to be. Of course, in a welfare state, "Libertarianism" is a bad word, because it means the government gets to take less of your money to distribute as they see fit.

Posted by: Ichabod | Oct 3, 2007 1:54:38 PM

YEAH! We did it. 6 months ago people said we were crazy and he was a no one. Look at him now with barely ANY mainstream media support. MSNBC is calling him an isolationist today, he is not. The people love him because he does not stand for his principals, he just wants to do the job of the President, ensure the Constitution is being enforced. Look in the news, people were arrested the other day for reading the constitution?????? Why do they fear us having the power again so much? Our current administration tells us if you are not for the war on terror you are un-American, etc. If you are not for the constitution, then what are you? What is so bad about5 Ron Paul, I have never heard a valid argument except for the terrorism bogeyman.

Posted by: Drew | Oct 3, 2007 1:57:09 PM

It must have been those 5 Paul supporters/spammers donating a dollar 1,000,000 times, right? I would hope this might shut up the haters for awhile, but I doubt it. They're scared to death of Mr. Paul.

And come on, ABC! This is jaw-dropping to no one who's actually paying attention to what's going on.

And since it's the media's JOB to pay attention to what's going on, that begs the question: Is the media really that ignorant of the political landscape in this country, or is it purposefully not reporting Mr. Paul's support accurately?

Posted by: Greg8898 | Oct 3, 2007 2:00:27 PM

Since when does supporting 2nd amendment rights diminish support from the GOP base? Lets keep the money coming, the media oligopoly can't belittle Paul's campaign forever.

Posted by: Todd | Oct 3, 2007 2:05:32 PM

Cash on hand is $5,300,000 for Q3(out of the press release)

The important figure I saw was:

Ron Paul: Fundraising up 114%
Romney: Fundraising down 29%
Guilliani: Fundraising down 40%
McCain: Fundraising down 55%

Ron Paul is the only candidate who is going up even w/o mainstream news coverage.

"But Paul's strict Libertarianism ... could hurt him with the GOP base who will ultimately choose the Republican nominee."

I don't think this "base" is as big as what you say it is. The Republican party is made up of people who respect America's traditional values-- and that doesn't mean God, guns, and gays, but ANY kind of freedom. The "holy warriors" are a tiny and stupid minority.

I tip my hat to the new Constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution !!

Posted by: Mike S | Oct 3, 2007 2:17:50 PM

Amazing how many he has won or topped where people had to go out to vote. the scientific polls, which do not include him as a choice are terribly misleading to the public. Pauls is quite the winner and favorite where it matters....at the voting booths.

Posted by: Cindy | Oct 3, 2007 2:18:09 PM

"His support for the 2nd amendment could hurt him with the GOP base" Last time I checked the GOP base was solidly pro 2nd amendment. Ron Paul (and millions of Americans) just want the rest of the Constitution respected too. Ron Paul in '08!

Nice title ABC. Maybe you folks will finally start giving Ron Paul some credit.
