Pelosi: Dems Not Caving to Bush

ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday pushed back at perceptions that Democrats are caving to President Bush to extend the administration's wiretapping powers, saying that the final bill Congress passes will have far more protections for civil liberties than the administration favors.

Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters at a lunch meeting in Washington that Democrats are balancing civil-liberties protections with the need to collect intelligence. She was responding to a report in The New York Times that said Democrats would make concessions to the administration to avoid being labeled as "soft" on terrorism.

"The facts are these: Democrats recognize that intelligence is a very important part of protecting the American people," Pelosi said. "This isn't about Democrats being concerned about the next election. This is about Democrats saying: The law needs to be followed, and we will collect whatever information -- intelligence -- we need to protect the American people under the law."

Pelosi also said she will continue to push for Congress to force an end to the war, despite Democrats' inability to move such legislation in the Senate. But she said liberal groups need to be patient in recognizing that while Democrats control Congress, the president still has veto power.

"In the House now, we'll not be confining our legislative initiatives to what is legislatively possible in the Senate," she said. On groups that are agitating for a faster end to the war, she said: "They are advocates -- we are leaders. We have a different responsibility."

Pelosi also weighed in for the first time on controversy that's swirled around 12-year-old Graeme Frost, a Baltimore boy whom Democrats highlighted two weeks ago in trying to make a case to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program. The Frost family has come under withering attack on some conservative blogs, with bloggers suggesting that the family is wealthy enough to afford private health insurance.

"The attack on this family is just breaking new ground and stooping to new lows in terms of what happens in Washington, DC," Pelosi said. "It's really a sad statement about how bankrupt some of these people are in their arguments against S-CHIP, that they would attack a 12-year-old boy."

The Democratic Party Representative and Senators better start stepping up and stop bowing down to the GOP -- the one who is soft is Bush (SOFT in the HEAD) -- Doesn't look like ole Harry Reid wants his job again and Nancy just got hers -- so she better start doing her homework and study the constitution. Out legislative body has a lot more power than they are utilizing at this point

It's about time! Start playing just as dirty as the republicans!

To the DEMS and Pelosi and Reids credit, it is the failed MAINSCREAM media who foment hatred and work against their attempts to control the bushbaby. The MAINSCREAM media has failed so thoroughly that fomenting arguments and back and forth allegations is all they have left to do since they failed so thoroughly in their own daily routines. The embedded journalist is just now pulling their head out into the light of day after bush sent them packing into the proverbial place where the sun don't shine. A friend of mine at the local paper agreed with me when I stated that the NEWS CLOWNS decided to be the innocent bystander instead of ever again investigating and reporting on anything of substance, because the advertisers might whinny.

About time the Democrats start standing up to King Bush. They should have started it a long time ago. Too bad there are still too many Republicans in Congress for any meaningful action to be taken. We need to take this country back from the overzealous, right-wing, extremist, conservative ideologue fanantics. Everyone VOTE DEMOCRATIC next year!!!

It's an embarassment to be labled a Democrat, they are too lazy to vote, to quick to forgive, and are too slow to move on important topics. They hold still while bad attitude bullies take aim on their shortcomings. Even though the Republicans got us into a War that is doomed to fail, put us into debt for generations, slowed the stock market to a snail's pace, and driven the price of gas to $3 a gal, most Americans still think ALL politicians are similar.

Pelosi is ineffective - so is the Senate, the House, and the Justice Department. YOu have the power to stop the President you should have - so just who is responsible? We can all blame Bush - but that is a shared blame when others in power sit on thier hands and do nothing they cry "poor me" to the press! You all have the power given by the constitution to change course - - you didn't - simple as that! We elected a president - you made him a KING by giving him a blank check and all the power he asked for! Shame on all of you!

What a phony Nancy. Just like Hillary. SPIN SPIN SPIN, its just makes you more dizzy. OF course they are caving. they have no support among blue dog moderates and REPs are united. She and Harry need a dose of reality. WHere has she been hiding for the last 2 months? Laying low trying to avoid more humiliation.

"Pelosi: Dems Not Caving to Bush"

BS

If Nancy continues this talking tough but rolling over on EVERY single issue, it's pretty easy to see her losing her senate seat to a certain well known war protester. What ever happened to draining the swamp Nancy?

Fact of the matter is that Dems in the House have the power of the purse, according to the much maligned U.S. Constitution of late "All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives." This includes Bush's military spending bills. Since Dems control the House, its rules, and committees, all they have to do is kill Bush's bills in committee. End of Iraq War. Simple.

I used to think members of Congress were sworn to defend the Constitution. But they passed the USA PATRIOT Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the Protect America Act.

Now this so-called RESTORE Act. Another cute name, punching another hole in the Constitution. Blanket warrants are prohibited by the Fourth Amendment. Why doesn't Nancy Pelosi know that?

Lesson #1 Set the agenda.
Lesson #2 Don`t pick fights you know you can`t win.
Lesson #3 Stop giving Bush the benefit of the doubt on anything. (How dumb are the Dem`s not to have learned after 6 years that it`s his way or the highway!) He will only use it to take unfair advantage as he has so many times in the past, like the vote to allow the genius to "decide" to go to war!

Ms. Pelosi is certainly has diminished her adroit ability of converging House democrats to halt or slow Bush from continuing his abusive of power. It is understood that the democrats do not have seats to force change immediately. She needs to listen to the majority of Americans and push votes to the floor that exposes the republicans of being out of touch with the vast majority. It seems the republicans have ignored what American people are saying – stop runaway cost of health care (up 35% since 2002 verse wages up 19%) and stop frivolous spending. Congress just raised the debt ceiling again because this administration cannot control its spending. The middle class is in a recession due to the fact they are burden with the housing slump, increase CPI basket, high gasoline prices, energy up 12% over two year, and much more. The wage increase is no match for the rising cost for the basics.

What world does this woman live in? Does she really think we're all stupid? Pelosi will go down in history as the enabler of this gang of thugs.

Multiple Choice:
Do you love and respect the...

It's a shame that speaker Pelosi doesn't look at the title on her door in her home district. It says "representative," not "leader." As such, she is supposed to represent what her constituents want, not lead them where she wants. As a representative, she has been incredibly ineffective and unrepresentative of what those who voted for her want: an end to the war. At election time she will learn the results of her malfeasance.

You know what gets on my last nerve?

That underlying edge of contempt for her voting constituency demonstrated by Ms. Pelosi's words and actions.

She believes that she has our votes in the bag. We're a wholly-owned asset of the congressional leadership. Assets do not need to be listened to.

Ms. Pelosi and her ilk have other fish to fry and wish we'd stop annoying the grown-ups. They're busy.

With something...
