Bush to Meet Publicly With Dalai Lama

ABC News' Ann Compton Reports: For the first time ever, President Bush will join the Dalai Lama at a public event next week, and officials say the President will use the high profile occasion to answer China's complaints that the revered Buddhist leader is a separatist, trying to gain independence for his native Tibet.

This will be the first time any U.S. president meets publicly with the Dalai Lama, although the Buddhist leader has been welcomed many times privately by President Bush,  former President George H.W. Bush and former President Bill Clinton.

The White House insists that just last month at the APEC Summit in Australia, President Bush told Chinese President Hu Jintao about next week's ceremonies.

The President will make remarks at the US Capitol rotunda ceremony Wednesday when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi presents the Dalai Lama with a Congressional Gold Medal for his leadership "to promote wisdom, compassion, and non-violence."

As the U.S. begs China for help in calming Burmese violence in South Asia, the timing of the Dalai Lama's visit is extremely sensitive. China opposes any head of state meeting with the Buddhist leader.

White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe told ABC News Bush will call him "a great spiritual leader who is seeking rights for the people of Tibet not independence, rights to worship freely and to protect their land."

Speaking directly to Beijing, which has cracked down on freedoms in Tibet, Bush is expected to tell Chinese leaders they "should get to know this very spiritual leader we have gotten to know."

The day before the public ceremony, Johndroe says the Dalai Lama will meet privately with Bush in the family residence at the White House as they did in 2003 and 2005. Officials say that is the appropriate place to welcome a spiritual leader as opposed to a political leader.

Well if you are going to start a worldwide christian crusade you might as well try and gather all the religious types to support you. Is the Daily Llama buying in to the bush debacle?

It's about time that THE world superpower addresses the human rights issues in Tibet and elsewhere. China is and always has been one of the largest violators of basic human rights against it's own people and those of it's "provinces".

This won't redeem war criminal Bush in my eyes, but it is important to do, and I encourage Bush and others to support Tibet's struggle. If you'd bomb Iraq for all you claim Saddam did, then China should at least take some criticism from the US for what it does to Tibet and how many people China killed in Tibet over the last 50 years.

Actually regarding the lead toy issue, my school just had a videoconference with one of the vp's of the company in China who made the toys. The problem was that the U.S. company didn't tell the people in China not to use lead-based paint because they assumed that China wouldn't use hazardous chemicals when manufacturing these products. In the U.S. we have all these rules and regulations about what materials can be used in certain products; in China they don't. China doesn't have organizations like OCEA and others monitoring the way products are made. So it was just a case of unknowingly not communicating enough.

Perhaps ABC could tell us why TED KOPPEL just went to CHINA? Prepping for the OLYMPICS? Trying to divert war? Checking on the lead paint suppliers? Undercutting the Daily Llamas visit here? Apologizing profusely? Film at eleven...BACK TO YOU DOUG!!!

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama has witnessed the deaths of his beloved people and destruction of his country; because of China - he will bare witness to the sufferings of the pople of Burma, because of China. Yet, He remains a constant presence for peace, kindness and compassion. In respect for His Holiness I will make an effort to not consume goods from China. This is difficult because packaged in the US is not the same as Made in USA. It is a small thing, but it is a peaceful solution - if we all do it - maybe China will get the message, - maybe we can begin to manufacture, create jobs and become self sufficent in our own country again - that would be a good thing. Yes, it will cost more, but the results will be different - we will be supporting American families with our purchases instead of China's millitant aggression. Maybe we can get out and vote and stop this country's millitant agression. It is difficult to picture Bush honoring the Dalai Lama, a war monger handing out medals for peace - this world just get crazier! Who knows, maybe Britany Speers will hand the Mother of the Year awards?

I agree with White Mountain. Anyway what is George going to do when he needs to borrow money again and he can't snatch some out of Social Security? China is slowly destroying our manufacturing jobs and the consumer is getting poor quality goods.Americans worry about smoking yet don't hesitate to jump in their own 4-wheel polluter, drive to Wal- Mart and purchase cheap goods from China where the people have to wear masks to go outside.

I hope the Dalai Lama throws up on his not very majestic King Bush.

Perhaps China "should be held accountable for the consequences" as well for their history of genocide and for putting millions of children of other countries at risk for using lead-based pain in toys. BOYCOTT CHINA!
