Obama Camp Rips Romney for Osama Gaffe
October 23, 2007 12:35 PM
ABC News' Matt Stuart, Teddy Davis and Sunlen Miller Report: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney repeatedly invoked the name of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., Tuesday while talking about an audio tape released earlier this week by Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
"Just look at Osam . . . Barack Obama said just yesterday. Barack Obama calling on, on radicals, Jihadists of all different types to come together in Iraq," Romney said Tuesday during a speech in Greenwood, S.C.
More than once, Romney said "Barack Obama" when he meant Osama Bin Laden.
While Obama responded to Romney's mispronuciation of his name with a smile, saying "that happens...I don't pay too much attention to that," his presidential campaign denounced the "fear-mongering" it claims is "at the heart" of Romney's campaign
"Apparently, Mitt Romney can switch names just as casually as he switches positions, but what's wrongheaded is continuing a misguided war in Iraq that has left America less safe," Obama spokesman Bill Burton told ABC News. "It's time to end the divisiveness and fear-mongering that is at the heart of Governor Romney's campaign."
The Romney campaign maintains that the former Massachusetts governor simply mis-spoke in Greenwood, S.C.
"Governor Romney simply misspoke," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden told ABC News. "He was referring to the recently released audiotape of Osama bin Laden and misspoke when referencing his name. It was just a brief mix-up."
Later Tuesday, while speaking in Greenville, S.C., Romney correctly identified Bin Laden -- not Obama -- as the source of this week's audio tape calling on Jihadists to unite.
Romney's confusion of Bin Laden's name with that of Obama's took on a special sensitivity on Tuesday because back in July, Romney posed for a photo with a supporter who was holding a sign which read, "No to Obama, Osama and Chelsea's Moma." The photo received widespread news attention and prompted a critical question from a New Hampshire town-hall audience member.
Romney is not the only politician to have confused Obama's name with that of the terrorist leader who masterminded the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.
Shortly after Obama took office, Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., committed a similar error.
"Why don't we just ask Osama bin -- Osama Obama -- Obama what -- since he won by such a big amount," said Kennedy. "Seriously, Senator Obama is really unique and special."

I see Sen. Barack HUSSEIN Obama on some clip inNew Hampshire where he act like no "honest Abe" when he insists that "Ameriocans are not interested in presidential candidate's MIDDLE name".
Well, with middle name like HUSSEIN (which he shares with somehow negative character in Anmerican popular culture, Saddam) he will be for surprise there.
William JEFFERSON Clinton frequently and proudly (why no one asks) showed his middle name.
In an all-out push to "celebrate diversity" the first Muslim-backround (or faith) presidential candidate or VP nominee should not lie that Americans are not interested, especially when Obama is of Arabic origin and Hussen is as Arabic or used by Muslim as one can get it.
Sadly, instead of being proud on his heritage and accomplishment, Se. Barack HUSSEIN Obama intentionally runs away from it when he calculates that his supposed hallmark "to tell it as it is" might not score positive points for him. What a letdown!

Including "Barack" in his purported gaffe makes it clear to me that this was no mistake.
He owes Senator Obama an apology.
Scratch Mitt Romney off the list of respectable Republicans for his childsplay.

You complainers out there, did you forget that your favorite liberal did the same thing? Ted Kennedy called Obama by the name Osama. So, whatever you say about Romney, you need to say about Ted.

Sen. Obama's nane is Arabic, his father was Muslim, his mother married another muslim after his death, he himself attended school in Muslim Jakarta, Indnesia and his middle name Hussein in Arabic means "good" and it is a name of one of the most prominent Shia Muslim's saint.
And Sen. Obama is assuring us that with all those calculated images that he and any other candidate thows at us, his Arabic name, tzpologically and linguistically similar to the most unpolular terrorist mastermind and 9-11 plotter, the middle name of Hussein and apparently rather lively Muslim religion in his life are of no interest to American electorate?

Says it all. This story is a joke. It's not Romney's fault that Osama sounds like Obama, etc. People will continue to confuse the names on occasion.
Actually, I like both of these guys; they are my two top choices. They are both incredibily smart and educated. Their IQ's must be way up there.

Romney shows us that his IQ and ability to say idiotic things rivals that of Gerge Bush.

Well, I agree with some of the comments that this was done on purpose (the name mix-up) and it was a stupid move. Why didn't he just make references to Obama's muslim background (like some of the idiots on this site)? Why, because it would open up the door for comment on Romney's MORMON BACKGROUND. Not that I care but for a lot of people it does matter.

Gaffs say nothing about a person's intelligence, unless they are continuous. Remember this one?
"Barack Obama, caught up in the fervor of a campaign speech Tuesday, drastically overstated the Kansas tornadoes death toll, saying 10,000 had died.
The death toll was 12.
"In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died—an entire town destroyed," the Democratic presidential candidate said in a speech to 500 people packed into a sweltering Richmond art studio for a fundraiser.

Since when does a person 's middle decides whether he could run a country or not. if GWB can anybody can. that is a fact.

It's okay for Teddy Kennedy to make a mistake but not Romney LOL.

Hah!! Those "Senior Moments" showing his age heh!!
Simple way to differentiate if one wants to and it is a true slip up -- one is Barack -- the other bin Laden ---
Osama, Obama are to confusing for the 55+ to get off their tongues as I can and I have noticed Hillary as well can attest to!! ooops!! did I say that??

This article states that Bin Laden was the mastermind behind 9/11 attacks? I have read several articles regarding Bin Laden and he has clearly stated he cannot take credit for 9/11, and that he did not have anything to do with it, so what is the truth? If he is the horrible person that he is played out to be, which I am sure is true, he would want the credit for those
attacks right? Not trying to change the subject matter here by the way. I am sure Romeo just made an honest mistake when he spoke.
Someone please give some info on the Bin Laden and 9/11 attacks. Did he really take credit for it, and if so, when?

I don't know of anyone that hasn't gotten the names of their kids, pets, or significant-other(s) mixed up. This is a silly concern.

Anyone who casts doubt on another because of their name, family religion, middle name or skin color makes me sick to my stomach. When did Americans become so scared of the world? Were our grandparents afraid of the world? They fought WWII based on freedom, liberty and justice. Anyone here who knocks Barack because of his name, family or skin color is a waste of an American You are wasting the sacrifice that was made before you. I ask again: when did all of you become so scared of the world?

In response to the posts about Senator Obama's religious background:
For an unbiased, (not fear-mongering), accounting of Senator Obama's religious biography, I refer you to webpage of The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life :
Information from their site is pasted below:
Obama Religious Biography
In His Own Words
"Faith doesn't mean that you don't have doubts. You need to come to church in the first place precisely because you are first of this world, not apart from it. You need to embrace Christ precisely because you have sins to wash away – because you are human and need an ally in this difficult journey."
(Speech, June 28, 2006)
Obama describes his upbringing as not "particularly religious." His father was raised a Muslim but became an atheist before he met Obama's mother. When Obama was two, his father left the family and moved back to his homeland of Kenya. Obama's mother was raised by a Baptist and a Methodist, both of whom were "non-practicing." Obama describes his mother as "one of the most spiritual and kindest people I've ever known," but with a "healthy skepticism of organized religion." When she remarried, it was to an Indonesian man who Obama said practiced "a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths."
After his mother's second marriage, Obama spent five years in Indonesia where he attended a Catholic school for three years and a predominantly Muslim public school for one year. The heritage of Obama's father and stepfather as well as Obama's middle name – Hussein – have led to media questions about the Illinois senator's religious identity. In response, Obama's spokesman said that "Senator Obama has never been a Muslim" and "is a committed Christian."
After graduating from college, Obama began attending a congregation affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a mainline Protestant denomination with 1.2 million members. Obama has said that he was moved by the "power of the African-American religious tradition to spur social change" while working as a community organizer for a group of churches in Chicago, and that he "felt God's spirit beckoning me." He was baptized in the church he now attends, Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ.

Before the former Massachusetts governor (Mitt Romney) does anymore talking he should have a lengthy discussion with that other former governor (Tim Allen). Possibly Romney might learn something valuable; Intelligent people are listening!

Don't worry Mitt, you will have a year to practice saying the name of the next President of the United States---its Barack Obama.
Posted by: BSmith | Oct 23, 2007 11:21:06 PM
Obama, Osama, that's just one letter off. Mitt has an excuse. What about Hussein, wasn't that the former dictator of Iraq or is it the middle name of a wanna-be Prez?
Posted by: swissdiver | Oct 23, 2007 11:50:32 PM
Who would want a president with a name of Barack Hussein Obama? Not me.
Posted by: Troy | Oct 23, 2007 11:53:14 PM
another "stupid republican"... is that a redundant phrase?
