Romney Maintains Iowa Lead, Fights for New Hampshire
October 07, 2007 7:16 AM
ABC News Matt Stuart Report: Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has maintained his lead in Iowa after the entrance of Fmr. Sen. Fred Thompson R-Tenn., according to a new poll conducted by the Des Moines Register.
In its latest poll, Romney has maintained his lead at 29%, but Thompson has emerged in second place among those Republican voters who will "probably or definitely" attend the Iowa caucus. Gov. Mike Huckabee and Fmr. NY Mayor Rudy Giuliani vie for third place at 12 and 11 percent respectively.
The poll comes as Romney is working hard to retain his lead in New Hampshire, where Romney's poll numbers have fallen as Giuliani's have improved.
Romney spent two long days campaigning across southern and central New Hampshire this week, where he argued Giuliani fought to eliminate the line item veto during the Clinton Presidency and fought to keep a commuter tax for non-New York City residents into the city. Romney also started sending his first direct mailer in the state today, and The Boston Globe is reporting that Romney is uping his ad buy on New Hampshire's WMUR station from 80,000 dollars this week to 128,000 dollars next week.
