Romney Wins Conservative Straw Poll
October 20, 2007 3:36 PM
ABC News' Karen Travers reports: Mitt Romney won the Family Research Council Values Voters' Summit straw poll in Washington Saturday, barely beating out Mike Huckabee with just 30 more votes.
Romney garnered 1595 votes to Huckabee's 1565 in the poll of conservative activists. Ron Paul was third with 865 and Fred Thompson was fourth with 564 votes. Rudy Giuliani, who addressed the crowd Saturday, finished eighth.
Romney spoke at the summit Friday and called for ending the "marriage penalty" and decreasing out-of-wedlock birth.
In a veiled hit at his rival, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and his more liberal positions on gay rights and abortion, Romney said, "We won’t win the White House with only two out of three or one out of three… We’re not going to beat Hillary Clinton by acting like Hillary Clinton."
Romney reiterated his belief that "two parents are the ideal setting for raising a child." On abortion, Romney declared he would be "a pro-life president," acknowledging that he was a "convert to this cause," referencing his 2005 change from an "effectively pro-choice" position to a pro-life stance.
More than 2,000 conservative activists attended the summit and heard from the Republican presidential field over the last two days.
Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said 5,776 votes were cast in the straw poll by voting in person, online or by mail. Romney's campaign actively petitioned supporters to vote online whether or not they had attended the conference.
The straw poll is non-binding, unscientific, and does not necessarily reflect the social conservative movement as a whole.
The following three questions were on the straw poll ballot:
1. Which of the following candidates for president would you be most likely to vote for?
RESULTS:
Romney- 1595
Huckabee- 1565
Paul- 865
Thompson- 564
Brownback- 297
Hunter- 140
Tancredo- 133
Giuliani- 107
McCain- 81
2. Who of the following candidates would be least acceptable to you as President of the United States? Clinton- 4141 (71.7 percent)
Giuliani- 532 (9.21 percent)
Obama- 278 (4.81 percent)
Kucinich- 196 (3.39 percent)
3. Please indicate which issue is the most important in determining your opinion of the candidate that you will most likely vote for – choose one:
RESULTS:
-abortion
-defending marriage
-tax cuts
-permanent tax relief

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Romney Wins Conservative Straw Poll:
Once again the most principled and conservative candidate shows honesty and integrity: Ron Paul. Dr. Paul was above board and direct with the "family values" crowd. We knew he would not (could not) win this one and I (for one)refused to cast a "online" ballot. This poll showed one thing: Even the "value" voters are not sure who to vote for!

of course these people gave Romney the nod ... they can't be fooled, they know a fellow hypocrite when they hear one ... "values voters" ... right!

I believe Ron Paul gave a great speech and DID NOT SWAY from his Republican and Constitutionalist platform at all. He stated what he believes in, and he stuck to the Constitution as always. He has integrity, and will be a great Leader. He has my vote and support. I was thrilled to see that he came in 3rd on the Straw Poll, all things considered here.
Ron Paul for the Win!!!!

Now all he has to do is get rid of the stench attached to that "nod".

Ron Paul showing third in this poll should give him first tier status like he deserves. He is the only candidate who sticks to his principles and values. I switched from independent to republican to vote for Ron Paul.

You all need to correct this report... Huckabee won the more meaningful straw poll there of actual attenders, winning 51% of actual attenders, which obviously means MORE THAN ALL OTHER CANDIDATES COMBINED (Romney at about 10%)... you all made the mistake of going off the Gary Bauer FRC press release which ignored the other poll others are now reporting as more significant (see e.g. Politico) and Huckabee as the proper headline... please check it out, and correct your headline.

This report is grossly inaccurate. It's really bad journalism.
The real straw poll (those in attendance at the Value Voter's summit) was won overwhelmingly by Mike Huckabee.
The vote you reported was an internet poll.

I don't trust that Romney guy. Mike Huckabee is hands down the 'Values Voter' winner!

ABC News does its readers a disservice by not reporting that the great majority of Mitt Romneys votes came from online voting, as did Ron Pauls. Mike Huckabee garnered 488 votes of attendeess with Romney getting only 99 of the 953 votes of those actually at the conference. Fred Thompson finished third and Tom Tancredo fourth among conferencegoers.

If honesty counts high amongst the values voters then Dr. Ron Paul has to get the most votes. He's the only Republican running willing to speak the truth to the American people.
Posted by: oneman | Oct 20, 2007 10:59:28 PM
I knew Dr. Ron Paul would have a hard time due to his constitutional brand of conservatism. These voters care more about imposing their values on other people instead of adhering to what our founding fathers meant for this country. At least Dr. Paul came in third. I am definitely voting for this man. He has unmovable principle.

It's clear by the above comments that Dr. Paul is in fact, the choice for America and the choice for the world.
I can only dream the first thing he does as president is rescind corporate personhood so this nation is returned to placing the highest value of importance in 1.) the individual, 2.) the state and 3.) the corporation, in that order.
Profit shall never, ever again become the golden calf over humanity and peace.

Huckabee was the clear and expected winner here. Romney was the only candidate who emailed his supporters asking them to vote for him online. We all know if Ron Paul had done the same, he would have won the online vote by a wide margin, however he did no such thing. Romney is all about buying the election, however this is going to get pretty expensive for him if he keeps spending the same and raising the same amount of cash. I think he is betting on getting the nomination by loaning himself lots of money, but he is going to be in deep when he ends up losing to Paul or Giuliani.

It's like saying mail in votes and votes cast at the voting booth are two seperate votes. You people are delusional. Go Romney!!
Posted by: Harry Oz | Oct 21, 2007 12:19:12 AM
I read in Newsweek that when the 14-year-old daughter of one of Romney's business friends went missing, Romney SHUT HIS BUSINESS DOWN, and all the employees went to New York City to look for her. Thankfully, they found her. Can you imagine any other businessman shutting down his business to go look for a missing person? Seems like a man with real values to me.

Romney sure is a very good potential president.I like the candidate the way he approaches issues that matter most to Americans. How can someone stand on a two or one legged stool and hoping the main leg(social conservatives)won't have a much effect? This is pure ignorant to the other candidate that thought of such idea.Mitt Romney is worth the nomination and the Presidents job.
Posted by: kmjjp | Oct 21, 2007 1:36:28 AM
No Romney, Rudy or McCain for my family. We like honesty and feel that Huckabee and Paul were the only two worth looking at.
Posted by: rockychance | Oct 21, 2007 7:58:03 AM
Paul Huckawho? Romney - delusional, yes. We need an electable canidate who will do more than pray!

This flimsy accounting is not the true and full story. As long as it's about values, why not a comment on the values of the winner? Mormon man Romney stuffed the ballot box with web voters only to prove he's a lying, cheating deceiver. To call him a winner in anything but the greed race is a total farce. Wake up ABC and call it correctly!

These Republican candidates offer America nothing. These Religious Right people are an embarrasment to this country and themselves.
Time to vote for change in 2008!!!

Aren't the "value voters" the ones who ultimately placed the majority of the people without values that we've been hearing about for their deviant behavior in the Senate and House in the last several years? Um-hum. I thought so.
Posted by: fletch | Oct 21, 2007 12:23:54 PM
Romney had a ton of support "in the room" but, his campaign told them to vote online rather than in the booth. That is why you see the contrast. Romney helped himself out drasticallly by winning the value vote.

Romney is a slicked up corporate sleaze bag, Rudy is a criminal and should be investigated for his criminal negligence in the NYPD and NYFD radio scandal. Thompson? He flips like a fish on a hot dock and why wont he answer a question without rambling? Huckaby, nice guy, Tancredo too, but they kinda miss the importance of the constitution. I'm a registered democrat who is supporting Ron Paul for president. I want a president of honest and long term integrity. I want a president who wont be owned by corporate America. I want a president like Ron Paul.

There seems to be quite a disparity between the recent Zogby poll asking which candidates the surveyed would NEVER vote for versus what it appears straw poll participants say. The more informed the surveyed person is about the candidates' positions, the worse the current "top-tiered" candidates do and the better the up-and-comers like Paul and Huckabee do. Which begs the question, when the general election run is in full gear, and the general public is paying closer attention to what the candidates are saying, who would do better... the current "top-tier" or the ones who are addressing the issues seriously instead of engaging in strategic demagoguery?

David V, it's easy to call them all hypocrites when they actually have high standards to aspire to. No one is perfect, and just because you can't meet those standards, doesn't mean they aren't worth aspiring to. It's alot better thatn teh secualarists who, of course, can never really be hypocrites to the same extent becasue they are a law unto themselves and do as they wish. They are accountable to nothing but what they choose to feel good about..

Seems a lot of Ron Paul supporters will accept only Ron Paul. Paul will not get the Republican nomination. He will presumably then run as an independent which will pull votes away from whoever does get the Republican nomination. A vote for Ron Paul as an independent is by default a vote for Hillary. Push for Paul all you want, but don’t run Thompson and Huckabee down too far. They might be your only hope to keep Hillary or Obama out of the White House. ... Unless Giuliani gets the Republican nomination, then I’ll vote for an independent.

There was only one true winner in the assorted crop of never do wells and lack luster former Attorneys. That is the man of impeccable principal, who for 10 terms in the House of Representatives has walked like he talks.
That moral and prestigious man is Dr. Ron Paul. Who says what he means and means what he says, unlike the phony word of art players on stage that say one thing and then do another. CHEERS

No such thing as "conservative" and "principaled" in the same sentance. I can't stand people that try to push their values down other people's thoats.
