Thompson Announces Immigration Plan
October 23, 2007 1:13 PM
ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: As one of his first proposals as a presidential candidate, former Senator Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., is tackling illegal immigration as a national security issue.
"A nation that cannot secure its borders ultimately will not remain a sovereign nation," Thompson told a group of law enforcement officers in Naples, Fla.
Touting it as a "common sense" approach, the GOP hopeful rolled out his multi-point proposal to secure the country's borders Tuesday while campaigning through the Sunshine State.
Thompson -- who once voted against a national employee verification system -- says in light of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and recent improvements in technology, he would like to see a system in place "where employees can very quickly determine whether or not somebody applying for the job is legal."
He also wants to slash discretionary spending to what he calls "magnets of illegality," sanctuary cities where local government and police cannot inquire a person's citizenship status.
Today, Thompson accused former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, again of being soft on immigration, stating his rival has been "consistent in his support of sanctuary cities." Thompson says he would deny sanctuary cities federal education grants to public universities that offer in-state tuition to illegal students. He says the government must stop acting as "inducers of illegality," stressing the immigration process needs to be more fair.
"So many people have stood in long lines for years to play by the rules and come here and be great Americans -- and they have been," Thompson said, adding, "It's certainly not fair to them, to grant amnesty for a group of people who have not played by the rules."
Thompson also proposes a more careful tracking of expired visas and would try to reduce "the scope of chain migration," by limiting immigration of extended family members. He says he would support a "faster track" to citizenship to those who serve in the armed forces. He also stressed the country must continue to remain a "haven" for the politically oppressed.

I have a very simple immigration plan: If they are here illegally, send them home. If they commit crimes here, they could be put to work building a wall, then sent home. If they are born here from illegal alien parents, they should not be citizens, just another illegal alien. Send them home. .... Notice the commonality? Send them home.

The problem with Thompson is not on immigration. Most of the Republicans are saying about the same thing on that issue. The bid problem with Thompson is that he is against a constitutional amendment banning homosexual marriage.

Ah yes Bill, that is by far the biggest problem facing our country today. Because the day gay marriage becomes legal, hell, fire & brimstone will fall from the sky. I don't get a say in who other people marry, so what gives you the right? And if all you have to say it that "it's not god's plan" or "it's not what nature intended", then you are nothing more than a Neolithic zombie who can't think for himself. Last time I checked, no one dropped a rule book out of the sky as to how this planet operates. If you want to believe a 3,000 year old book as to how to live in the 21st century go ahead, but don't impede on my rights.

Now this is REAL COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM!!!! Stopping sanctuary cities like Barrio New Haven, Ct, New York City, San Francisco is an important step in stopping the invasion of the US and restoring law and order. Thompsom has set the benchmark for handling these criminals - now it's up to the other candidates to measure up - or fail.

Come on people. Don't be stuppid. We know where Tom Tancredo stands, he wants to deport all the illegals. We know where John Mccain stands. He wants them to stay. It's that simple.
Someone should ask Fred Thompson what to do about the 20 millions people living here. You can't have it both ways Mr. candidate. Should they stay or should we deport them????????? It's pretty clear that Guluiani, Thompson, and Romney are playing with the base to get the nomination, and then will change flip flop again to get the hispanic vote. After all, you can't win an election without the hispanic vote. No one knows that better than Kark Rove.
One more thing for those who believe in polls. If American agrees with Tancredo or Duncan Hunter on immigration, why are they far behind?????????????????

All I hear is one can't get elected without the Hispanic vote or we can't do without the Hispanic workers.Number one Illegals can't vote (Legally) and to understand how much the earnings of these Illegal Workers invest in America all one has to do is stand outside your local western union office on friday (pay day) and watch the American Dollar head south... In more ways than one Last I Looked the Euro is worth 17% more than the US Dollar,Its all related
like it or not...Eisenhower once said "A People that values it's privlages above it's principals soon looses both"

How will Thompson deport every single one of them? Gather all the school buses and send them to the border? How is he going to handle the mass exodus? The reality is it can't be done. The truth is, people like Thompson, Romey, Tancredo and their jingoistic Republican minions are using illegal immigration as a pretext for racism. Even if they say it isn't, IT IS!

To Bill Rocker: — Huckabee, Thompson and Paul favor deportation. Giuliani, McCain and Romney favor amnesty and gun control, just like Clinton and Obama.... Thompson, Huckabee and Paul also feel some issues should be handled on the state and local levels. I agree. That’s why we have multi-tiered government.
Posted by: Royce | Oct 23, 2007 11:48:08 PM
Thompson, Huckabee or Paul could use Nagin’s busses to ship illegal aliens out. Hillary, Obama, Giuliani, McCain or Romney would use the busses to haul them in faster.

The senate is taking up the amnesty bill in another form. What happened to Democracy and a government by the people? We don’t want to give them amnesty, we just want them gone. We need to look at individual candidates in this election to see where they stand on the issues. Time for us to look beyond party affiliation.

Thompson you got to go take a hike sorry I rather see Bill Cosby running for President as a celebrity and a Afican American he has lots of power because he is African American just like Oprah she is very powerful. I rather see Bill Cosby run because he is a man of diversity not aganst color or creed.
Mc Cain serverd our country.

Mc Cain serverd our country, YA right, and he after he voted in favor of that amnesty bill and got his head handed back to him, see how quickly he changed. He did not serve his country when he voted for amnesty, knowing a majority of Americans were against it.

Why don't we just make an I.D. card program to identify who is here and make them learn English. We make them pay taxes, pay their own bills make them unable to receive welfare, and if they don'tlike they can leave. And also secure the borders.
Posted by: Mike | Oct 24, 2007 9:49:48 AM
exuse me people, most the those who are asking illegal to leave are not native americans.if america shoud be resided by americans then let's all go and and leave it for the indnians.no one can do the hardest jobs like hispanics.and if they use western union that's because they still have the real family relation and they don't live for themselves and put their parent in a nursing home.
don't think that Thompson really care about us but about himself.he think this issue is the key to his goal and nothing else.

No deportation necessary, no border fence needed. Simply cut all services to illegals, then sit back and watch the mass reverse migration out of this country. Problem solved.

Hey Wally:
Here's some news for you. There are over 40 million Hispanic citizens in America not including undocumented immigrants. Many of us come from families that have been here since the 1500's. And we can and do vote. Like it or not, the candidate that loses the Hispanic vote will lose the election.
As for the Western Union issue, here's an interesting bit of trivia for you...as millions of immigrants send money to their families back home they pay TENS OF MILLIONS of dollars to Western Union in the form of fees thus creating thousands of jobs. And guess where Western Union is headquartered...right smack in the middle of district 6, represented by none other than the myopic Tom Tancredo. I know because I live there and I used to work at Western Union HQ.
Get used to it.

One of the most common myths that I hear propagated by anti-immigrant proponents is that undocumented immigrants consume valuable public resources while contributing little or nothing to our economy. I think that myth can be dispelled with some simple arithmetic and one reasonable assumption.
First the assumption: Undocumented immigrants brush their teeth. Now, let’s do the math. If the average person uses a tube of toothpaste every five weeks, that comes to about 10 tubes of toothpaste per person, per year. At about $2 dollars a tube that comes to $20 per person, per year. The last figure I heard was that there were about 12 million undocumented immigrants currently in the U.S. Multiplying 12 million by $20 comes to $240 million spent per year by undocumented aliens on just toothpaste!
But the average individual, documented or otherwise, requires a bit more than toothpaste to live. Undocumented immigrants buy Nikes and pay rent. They purchase cars and corn chips. They drink Slurpees and buy underwear. They buy DVDs and pay utility bills. They go to amusement parks and visit museums. My point is that if one were to weigh all of these things against what undocumented immigrants consume in the form of public resources (which today is very limited by law anyway), I think it would become apparent that the U.S. economy still comes out on top.

Fred Thompson is right when he says that a nation that cannot control it's borders will not remain a sovereign nation for long. It is not just illegals coming here to have a better life. They are not entitled to it. American citizens built this country to be the best nation on earth and no one has the right to sneek in and effectively "steal" the benefits and freedoms that they have not rightly paid for. But those people aside, we have to secure our borders against those who wish to do us harm and we cannot know who that is until we have absolute control of our borders.
Finally, as a retired lawyer, I have advocated for years that constitutional rights belong only to citizens and those who are here legally - not to illegal aliens and parasites who wish to do us harm. If they are illegal, they have no rights and should be printed, a DNA sample procured and then deported immediately.
