Clinton in the Kitchen
November 02, 2007 1:58 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow and Eloise Harper Report: Hillary Clinton says she can stand the heat and won't be getting out of the presidential kitchen anytime soon.
Borrowing a phrase made popular by President Harry Truman, Clinton, D-N.Y., told reporters in Concord, New Hampshire, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen; I'm very much at home in the kitchen."
Clinton, taking heat over a much-panned debate performance on Tuesday night, admitted to the New Hampshire Union-Leader's John DiStaso that she flubbed a question on whether or not to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
In a press conference on the day she filed official papers to be on the ballot in the nation's first primary state, Clinton insisted, however, that she was targeted in the debate not because she's a woman but because she's the frontrunner.
"I don't think they're," referring to her six Democratic opponents in Tuesday's debate, "piling on because I'm a woman. I think they're piling on because I'm winning."
The Clinton camp has been pushing back against post-debate criticism, subtly implying gender may have played a role in Tuesday's debate while simultaneously lauding the former first lady's qualifications to be president.
Asked about the 'gender card' on Friday by ABC News' Kate Snow, Clinton insisted, "I'm proud to be a woman but I'm running because I'm the most qualified and experienced person."
The Senator held a rally at Wellesley, her alma mater, on Wednesday, telling the supportive crowd, "In so many ways this all women's college prepared me to compete in the all boys club of presidential politics."
Watch video from Friday's "Good Morning America" on whether Clinton is playing the gender card by clicking here.
Political junkies will also note that during her husband's first presidential bid, Mrs. Clinton associated herself far from the kitchen.
"I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession which I entered before my husband was in public life," Clinton told reporters during a stop at a Chicago bakery when asked about a possible conflict between her legal career and her husband's service as governor of Arkansas.
Later in the campaign, Clinton softened her tone, even offering her chocolate chip cookie recipe up for competition against one submitted by then-First Lady Barbara Bush.
Clinton's recipe won -- and her husband won White House -- kitchen included.

Oh, goody. Hillary takes some deserved punishment in Tuesday night's Democratic debate for being an unprincipled flip-flopper, and before the weekend arrives, the vagina monologue has begun! This farcical nonsense is straight out of the Al Sharpton playbook: When all else fails, play the race (or gender) card! Here's hoping the press keeps bashing on Hillary so the Dems can put up a decent candidate next year!

She's good in the kitchen? Huh. That's pretty inspiring stuff right there.
Posted by: TexBork | Nov 2, 2007 2:27:32 PM
Good Stay Home and keep out of our kitchens and our lives. She is a Socialist and a liar; she can not be trusted with the keys to the White House.
Posted by: No to Hilary 2008 | Nov 2, 2007 2:31:11 PM
Anyone who claims Senator Clinton is a "socialist" has not even the slightest idea of what socialism is and what kind of agenda Hillary Clinton has. But it seems that the hate-mongers are out in full force when it comes to post these sort of comments.
The fact is that 2 male moderators (Williams and Russert) ganged up with Senator Clinton's male rivals for the Democratic nomination and used the debate to use her as a punchbag--a shameful performance.
Posted by: BN | Nov 2, 2007 2:39:33 PM
BN - If Hillary can't take the heat (Ganged up by two male "liberal" moderaters) then she should stay out of the kitchen. Poor little girl. Boo Hoo; and yes she is a Socialist and a Liar (one in the same).
Posted by: No to Hillary | Nov 2, 2007 2:43:31 PM
What Williams and Russert did is what the press has not been doing for 7 years. Asking the questions that make the policy makers responsable to the American people.
Posted by: GM | Nov 2, 2007 2:46:47 PM
Anybody who says that Hillary is NOT a socialist has no idea what socialism IS and obviously does not remember history. Hillary is a socialist elitist and a warmonger. The military industrial complex has just dumped Bush to make way for Hillary if that does not speak louder than words. Not much transition from fascist dictator to national socialist!
Posted by: a.copley | Nov 2, 2007 2:47:18 PM
Well, Hillary, is talking out of both sides of her face now. She is fundraising by saying that the men ganged up on her while she plays tough-guy to the press. Why be consistent when duplicity works? She gave a terrible answer to the immigration question (among others). Why should we talk about that when she's winning? Hillary is winning the presidential race. We shouldn't let anything like issues get in her way. :)
Posted by: Sean O'Brien | Nov 2, 2007 2:48:10 PM
Awwww! How awful that two men ganged up on her. Poooooor Hil! That's just a pity. Give me a break. She clearly can't stand the heat. When it gets hot, she plays the victim. When it gets hot, she blames Bush. When it gets hot, she's under attack. What a load of crap. Yes, I know what socialism is and she is pursuing it at full speed ahead. It's time for her to run with the big dogs. If she wants to claim her experience, she will have to make her papers completely available to the public. Otherwise, let the professionals compete and take the "little woman" routine home.
Posted by: Getalife | Nov 2, 2007 2:49:25 PM
If she can't take the verbal attack, how could she possibily stand before terrorists and their leaders? Is she gonna cry how about they are attacking her because she's a woman? They won't care, and in fact, it would spur them.
Posted by: Getalife | Nov 2, 2007 2:53:40 PM
She thinks she's the most qualified and experiance person? I don't think she's even qualified to be a dog catcher.
Do really really want this woman to be the first woman president? The first woman president should not be a liar, should be firm in her beliefs, and should know more than how to make cookies.
Posted by: No Clintons | Nov 2, 2007 2:55:27 PM
Here Hilary goes again.Trying to to see where its politcally smart to lean. Two different positions again.
Someone who said she prefers to be out there rather than staying home to bake cakes now says she feels comfortable in the kitchen , all these bc its not smart to say what she said some years back now
Why wouldnt others attack her. I like a woman to be in the white house definitely. I dont have anything against women but when women want to pick one of theirs pick the right one not power hungry women. We need honest and sincere women. Now I dont know if I will vote for Hilary anymore..too much lies from her.

"They're all out to get me!" shrieks Hillary...
Posted by: dks0442 | Nov 2, 2007 3:07:44 PM
Good...let's vote for her to stay in the kitchen.
Posted by: jdog | Nov 2, 2007 3:08:12 PM
No to Hillary; So, to you all socialists are liars, and all liars are socialists? BTW, the phrase is "one AND the same" not "one IN the same". You might also take note that she didn't buckle when attacked by her opponents OR the "moderators", and that the "moderators" didn't throw any hardball questions to her opponents. I don't see her complaining about how they went after her. Rather, she simply stated the fact that she was their primary target. If you can't get her metaphor, I'll explain it to you: She's saying that she can take all the heat her opponents want to bring on.
What I find very hard to fathom is the level of hatred you have for someone you know only from what you see on Fox News, et al, and read on your favorite ultraconservative web sites. One big difference between her and ALL of the republican candidates is that she has the strength of character to admit when she's made a mistake, and is able to poke fun at herself for them. None of her opponents seem to have ever made any.
Posted by: Bob | Nov 2, 2007 3:13:32 PM
She claims she's winning!!!! What votes have been cast to make that pompous statement? Plus, do not forget that she's the person who claimed 'she didn't want to stay home and bake cookies' disparaging stay at home moms. She is a liar. I voted for Bill twice, but I wouldn't vote for him again and nor will I vote for Hillary.
Posted by: PJ | Nov 2, 2007 3:16:49 PM
Go Hillary.
I wonder whether anyone could stay focused for 2 straight hours after the a full court press of gotcha questions by a Russert , Williams and pontificating by the candidates. I think she did extremely well. She is the toughest of the whole lot. I sat with a group of people , not one of whom was for Hillary. Each one thought that there was a piling on , especially by the so called moderator, Tin Russert.
Ladies and Gents, we got ourselves a real President in Hillary Clinton.
Posted by: WALTER | Nov 2, 2007 3:28:36 PM
Not that I have anything against women, but has anyone really thought about how other countries will perceive us with a blonde women president? Really think about that for a moment, if you look at the news you can see we are not the world power that we used to be and our dollar is weak. Iran, South Korea, and Russia are powerful nations on the rise and they smell blood in the water and our poor country is cut and bleeding. Just because Americans respect women does not mean the rest of the world does. It would be a great step forward for women rights, but at this point in time I’m not too sure it’s the correct move for the country. Just something to think about.
Posted by: Lee | Nov 2, 2007 3:44:19 PM
Hillary should stay at home and be the victim she is. A victim of a failed marriage that she stays with. A victim of 'everybody's out to get me'. A victim of the right wing conspiracy. A victim is not presidential material!!!!!
Posted by: jim | Nov 2, 2007 3:46:48 PM
It's funny when the right wing nuts say that Hillary isn't qualified to be president or not even a dog catcher. These right wing nuts elected the dumbest and idiotic president twice! I also believe that one has to learn to speak english if they want to be American Citizens; however, we have a president who could hardly speak english, lol!

I watched the debate on Tuesday night.
Evidently, I did not hear the same thing everyone else did. I heard Ms. Clinton say that she supported her governor and that she understood why he was considering the license idea. My only explanation is that the Hilary-haters are looking for an opening of any kind. I was not sure who I would support until I saw how she stood her ground that night. I will now be ready to cast my vote for Clinton.
Posted by: KATHY | Nov 2, 2007 3:50:16 PM
First this woman is too scared to debate questions from Brit Hume. Now she claims Russert was too rough on her. She is a cheap trinket made in China by dishwashers. Anyone who would vote for this lying, Socailist manbearpig should look long and hard in the mirror.
Posted by: Big D | Nov 2, 2007 3:52:03 PM
what is that makes the americans wary of electing a woman? all this "in the kitchen"rubbish has nothing to do with politics! any way after GWB even mini mouse would be more acceptable!

Hey idiots, this election isn't between Bush and someone else. She has you dopes believing this. There are better choices on both sides. Look at Pelosi, she is a women and it didn't make her the best man for the job, now did it?
Posted by: Big D | Nov 2, 2007 4:01:00 PM
When he was given the chance out of the gate to delineate the differences between himself and Clinton at the MSNBC debate, Obama folded the tent. When Russert pressed Clinton on whether she would support a 4.5% surtax on the rich to help pay down the huge Bush Republican Party war and spending debt, she said no. Case closed. If we don't elect John Edwards as president of the United States, this country is toast.

Bush is a WAY bigger socialist than Hillary will ever be once she's elected.
Why? Look at how big the federal govt has become under Bush. Bush is a textbook case of a big government SOCIALIST republican. Look how much money he's borrowed too. Crazy.
Now do you think republicans will let Hillary get away with this much socialism? No way. Therefore, Bush has been a much bigger socialist than Hillary ever will be. I rest my case.

Flip flopping has and always will be both a REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT politicians way of speaking. What is needed is straight talk on real issues that effect the MIDDLE CLASS. And I want to know which candidate of which party represents me. My important issues are: 1. Outsourcing of jobs and our sensitive information (ss#, birthdates, mothers maiden names, ect) in the hands possible terrorists in India (they have terrorists there also), 2. illegal immigration and border security, stopping idiots from giving illegals Drivers licenses, 3. stopping construction jobs and subcontracting jobs from going to illegals, 4. Middle class not having medical insurance or not being able to pay for the costs, 5. Jobs lost to overseas and illegals equal no money for goods and services which equal no money for housing which equals more jobs lost and the cycle continues. 6. American products being made overseas with american companies coming back to america with lead poisioning and no safety control for the american children plus the medical drugs also being compromised by being made in china and other countries with no safety measures in place. U.S.A. having way too much reliance on foreign trade, instead of being a Strong Vibrant Independent Nation as it once was. These are the issues that we should be demanding answers on. Now that we got rid of one WHISHY WASHY politian, let's get rid of some more.

What astounds me is Hillary's support from labor groups. Did they miss the part where she indicated that she wants to increase H-1B visas to bring more foreign workers into the U.S. We can't even keep track of the ones here now who frequently outstay their visas and just disappear into the country. Did anyone miss the part about her support for "comprehensive immigration reform"--code words for the importation of cheap labor.

Bush a Socialist?? That's funny. Spending doesn't make a Socialist, the taxing and entitlements does. Wasn't it Hillary who wanted to force Wal-Mart to provide health insurance to part employees and cap Exxon earnings? She wants to make this the Land of Limited Opportunity and unlimited entitlements That's Socialism.

Even a couple of my Republican buddies thought (a) she was getting hammered far more than any other candidate by Russert and (b) she handled it pretty well. Overall verdict, she looked like the tough realist they looked either desperate, overly idealistic or silly.
Posted by: John | Nov 2, 2007 4:23:32 PM
Elaine-
It is true that spending doesn't make one a socialist. But would you rather spend billions of dollars in IRAQ (which Bush said before the war the IRAQ's oil will pay for itself) than to spend it on Veterans, child healthcare, etc.?
We, the taxpayers, are paying to the war and the ones who are profitting from it are the big private greedy companies such as Halliburton? What happened to your Compassionate Conservative mantra? You ought to change it to greedy and heartless conservatives, hehehe.
Posted by: Ren | Nov 2, 2007 4:24:27 PM
"She wants to make this the Land of Limited Opportunity and unlimited entitlements". it already is the land of limited opportunity- each industry sector is in a stranglehold by an upper epoch of a few elite companies. there is no more competition left in this "free market". this is not what Smith had in mind with the wealth of nations... and both the Clintons and the Bush's are responsible.

Here's how you sort it out, dummies. What are they lying about. Are they lying to get health care for you or are they lying to steal your -money at the gas pump.

WHAT? How can you call Hilary a socialist. She is the furthest to the right out of all the democratic candidates. In fact, shes very much a neo-con and, from a foreign policy standpoint, not much different than Bush. Tucker Carlson pointed this out a while ago. Probably the only smart thing he has ever said.
Posted by: Dan | Nov 2, 2007 4:47:27 PM
Clinton got that line from Chris Matthews ' MSNBC "Hardball" yesterday, Thurs., 11/01/07. In the show opener, he wrote his 3rd 'pseudo-speech' for the Dem candidates. I believe it is word for word: "..I think they're piling on because I'm winning."
I don't have the transcript.
Could you confirm?
On Thursday?s ?Hardball,? Chris Matthews, a former speech writer, offered his advice to Sen. Hillary Clinton on what she should say regarding the negative backlash to her performance at NBC?s Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate. His suggested speech is below: "Taking the heat is what leadership is all about. As Harry Truman said, 'If you don?t like the heat, stay out of the kitchen.' Taking heat is all part of the process of proving yourself for the world?s most important democratic office. The fact that I am the first woman has nothing to do with the heat on me in this week?s presidential debate. I was the target because, quite simply, I am running well in the national polls. I have gotten nothing but respect from my rivals for the nomination and have no complaints, certainly none to do with our difference in gender. So let?s move on. They?ll be more debates. There?ll be more shots from my opponents. There may even be a few from me at them. But those were the rules we agreed on, not in Philadelphia this week, but in Philadelphia back when we declared Independence. Besides, a little trouble I don?t mind. If I get to be the first woman elected to lead this country I don?t want it said it was because my rivals went soft on me - or I on them."

The Democratic candidates don't see anything wrong with giving legal documents to people who are in the country illegally. They have broken the law!
When they present themselves to authorities, they should be deported, not rewarded with a document they could use as ID to vote illegally. Or is that the point?
The worst part is that Clinton may be the most qualified of these fuzzy thinkers. And she's talking out of both sides of her mouth and doing the best she can to keep her records secret.
Have the Democrats been driven to insanity and stupidity by Bush?
Posted by: Maggie | Nov 2, 2007 5:10:23 PM
Thank you, Dan! It's nice to know I'm not the only person who realizes that Hillary, like her husband and Joe Lieberman, is nothing more than a Republican who joined the wrong party for reasons of political convenience! Seriously, folks, if you're going to vote for Hillary, you might just as well vote for Giuliani --! It certainly isn't their politics!
Posted by: TheDreaming1 | Nov 2, 2007 5:12:01 PM
I love it when the "Socialist" label comes out, which do you prefer, socialist or fascism ? Because we are quickly losing democracy. I'd vote for socialism, at least everyone gets health care like the rest of the world. And as in the rest of the world the rich will still get their share.

Does the 'I am at home in the kitchen' include baking cookies? I hope so. I think her real contribution based upon her experience as first lady is giving teas and baking scrumptuous cookies. We won't have to see any papers from the archives to establish that qualification and she won't have to go to Bill to get them released. I'm sure she is dreading asking him so let's save her the anguish.

Hillary is bad news for America/World. It does not matter if you're a socialist, a republican, dem, etc...If you're pro Hillary, you're an idiot...
Women in this country will ruin America.
Women are pro hillary because she's a woman...Thats it...Not on the issues..
You can't vote for someone because they're the same gender as you...The founding fathers are turning in their graves....

'Any democrat in the white house is better'? Does that include democratic candidates who see little green men and UFOs?
Posted by: Gary | Nov 2, 2007 6:03:55 PM
This is "Hillarious" folks. First, Hillary didn't take that big of a beating, although many would like to see her disappear. No one goaded Obama, because the charge would've been made that he was being picked on because of his bi-racial status. Hillary was the center of the attacks because she is the front-runner and Obama and Edwards especially are running scared. With the exception of the ID card, which her answers being taken out of context, she was nonplussed with how the rest of the male candidates made charges against her. She clearly proved, once again, that she can take anything thrown at her and deflect it back with her accomplishments and policy aspirations. There's nothing wrong with playing the gender card. The fact remains that the bully-boys would've pounced on Hillary even if she were a male who was the front runner. Schoolyard tactics always surface in this type of situation. Those who insist on criticizing Hillary every chance they have are pathetic mysogynists.
Posted by: TDef | Nov 2, 2007 6:14:06 PM
So we should elect hillary because she is smarter? So, let's just cancel the election and submit all of the candidates to an IQ test and settle it that way. I'm sure the founding fathers would appreciate that. Smart doesn't translate into leadership. Besides some of you are assuming that the ability to memorize well means that a person can direct a nation. It doesn't work that way. Getting straight 'A's is only good for the report card. Hillary is a good example of someone who knows how to get good marks but couldn't lead her way out of a paper bag with both ends cut out without a bevy of handlers.

Just because Bush cut taxes doesn't mean that he's some sort of pro-capitalist free market guy. Just the opposite.
Bush has borrowed RECORD sums of money and grown the federal government MASSIVELY. Growing the public sector the way Bush has is a very socialist thing to do. And you can be certain that when Hillary is president, the few republican legislators in office won't let her get away with continuing to grow the federal govt the way they let Bush get away with it.
Plus, look at all the entitlements Bush has created like the prescription drug program and his education program. The guy is as socialist as any european socialist - the big difference is that instead of taxing to raise the money to expand the federal govt, he just borrows it. Look at it this way -he's taxing your children for his socialist republican govt. But any way you cut it, the republican party of the past 7 years has grown the federal government to a degree that they are unlikely to allow democrats to do.

so VP says women will vote for Hillary simply because she is a woman. Exactly how does that differ from any other group? Lets go to the south and see how many white men would vote for a black or a woman. Lets go to a predominately black district and run a middle aged white man and see how he does. Run a hispanic in a hispanic district and guess who gets elected? How many dems are elected in heavy repub districts and vice versa? Of course women will vote for a woman just like I'm more apt to vote for a dem and you a repub. DUH!!!

Yeah, all of us who can't stand Hillary are (A) Republicans; (B) misogynists; or (C) both. Horse hockey! I'm probably more liberal than almost anyone who's posted here -- THAT'S why I can't stand Hillary! FACT: She voted to invade Iraq and refuses to admit that it was a mistake. FACT: She's just as much of a cynical, self-interested corporate shill as her hubby and Dubya. FACT: She recently gave Dubya the first green light to go ballistic on Iran with her Revolutionary Guard vote. FACT: Her alleged opinions change drastically with the slightest shift in the political winds; she's as much of a flip-flopper as Mitt Romney! FACT: If this woman becomes president, the only difference will be that we'll get stem-cell research and the ladies will get to keep their right to choose. Those are nice things, but we can do a long sight better, folks! Some combination of Obama and Edwards is preferable in every conceivable way to another stinking Republi-clone Clinton in the White House!

All the comments bashing Hillary is just plain jealousy because these people did not progress in life and now they hate for someone that did. Hillary is going to win the nomination and Giuliani can give a goodby speech and go on with his life like Edwards and Obama (with the run of the mouth wife) will drop out. Thank goodness for Hillary because without her running look what we have campaigning for president. All of them don't have enough experience, ability or intelligence to run the country or to talk to world leaders. America would be a laughing stock and world leaders would be climbing all over us. Face the facts and get a thinking cap.

To Dreaming: You have so many facts in your comments you can't get the facts straight. What a joke. Edwards and Obama. The both are lucky they can count to ten. Experience, ability, intelligence? Absolutely not. I like Hillary's "stay out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat" and for those that don't understand what that means go back to first grade and start over again. You need schooling. Hillary is smarter and has more education than all of you that are bashing her. Don't you wish you had the same? Of course you do but you probably don't have a dime in your pocket to do it with. She will be our next president like it or not. No one is twisting you arm to vote for her, vote for your choice and keep quiet.

The only one who can take the heat and the punches is Hillary Clinton! She has the most strength and leadership then any other candidate! and if you all keep comparing Obama to The greatest President we ever had, John F. Kennedy, then you must have a few too many screws loose, because only Hillary comes close to a new Kennedy!!!!

Hit_lary couldn't tell you the difference between salt and pepper. Right at home in the Kitchen, give me a break. If one of her opponents said that they would be called sexist. Why is it ok for her? She is so nasty. Noone likes her except for the under-educated women voters. She is such a phony. Go back to her upper East side apt and learn how to cook. ABC -anyone But Clinton, But not Dumbo Ears.

They're all crazy, lying and dirty as far as I'm concerned. Now I'm doing research on Ron Paul and he's looking better every day.
Just for grins, check out Hillary's voting records....war, war, war, war, and more war, didn't even take the time to vote on SCHIP Nov. 1, war, war, China YES, Chile YES, war, war.
