Clinton Rivals React to Hostage Situation
November 30, 2007 3:40 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Parker Reports: As news spread Friday about the hostage situation at the Rochester, New Hampshire campaign office of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., the Senator's presidential rivals reacted swiftly, expressing sympathy and taking security precautions of their own.
Clinton's Democratic political rival Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., placed a call to the Clinton campaign at 3:20pm Friday afternoon but was told she was on the phone with the parents of one of the hostages, reports ABC News' Sunlen Miller.
The Obama campaign said he told Clinton's aide that his thoughts were with the staffers and that if there was anything they could do, to not hesitate to call.
Obama's Rochester, New Hampshire campaign office was evacuated as a precaution Friday afternoon, said Obama campaign New Hampshire press secretary Reid Cherlin. Obama's Rochester office has about three or so staffers and a handful of volunteers.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Clinton team as we await a safe resolution to this situation," read a statement released by the Obama campaign during the day.
The Rochester, New Hampshire campaign office of Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., also evacuated its two full-time staff members.
"If it happened in some place like Rochester you have to think that most all of your offices would be vulnerable," Elizabeth Edwards said in a CNN interview Friday.
"I thought so much as it was going on about how terrified they must be and their families must be and that broke my heart," Elizabeth Edwards said about the Clinton staffers.
At the Democratic National Committee Fall meeting in the Washington, D.C. area where Clinton was scheduled to speak later in the afternoon, DNC chair Howard Dean announced she had canceled her appearance because of the hostage situation.
Many of her Democratic rivals there expressed sympathy for Clinton.
"As I was on the beltway coming from Wilmington, Delaware my home, I heard the news about Hillary's headquarters," said Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., addressing the DNC meeting. "and I'm sure like everyone here, I pray to God it all works out right and I wish Hillary the best of luck."
"We are in solidarity at this moment when we think about what she is going through and what her staff is going through," Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio said at the DNC meeting.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the hostages, their families, Senator Clinton, and her campaign staff," said Democratic presidential candidate Gov. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., in a statement.
"All of us have friends and colleagues on the Clinton campaign and our thoughts are with them," Sen. Chris Dodd's New Hampshire spokesman Bryan DeAngelis said in a statement.
Campaigning in South Carolina, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said he hoped the situation would be resolved quickly.
"It should happen in no place in America," McCain said, "our prayers go out to those people who may be in danger because of what is clearly some kind of lunatic behavior."
The office of Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul, R-Tex., also expressed sympathy for the Clinton staffers. "Our hearts go out to the hostages," said Paul communications director Jesse Benton.
Other campaigns reported taking increased security precautions.
A spokesman for former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., said their campaign advised all Romney campaign field offices to lock exterior doors.
"As a security precaution, we have asked all our field offices to lock all exterior doors and be on alert for any suspicious individuals," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in the situation in New Hampshire. Everyone is hoping for a safe resolution."
The Rudy Giuliani campaign didn't evacuated their New Hampshire offices, saying all their staff are safe and accounted for.
ABC News' Sunlen Miller, David Chalian, Bret Hovell, Brian Wheeler, Matt Stuart, Z.Byron Wolf, Raelyn Johnson, Jackie Klingebiel and Nancy Flores contributed to this report.

Irrespective of our beliefs and political persuasions, we are all common everyday folks who share a collective compassion for each other. It is with this in mind that I would ask each of those who read this to take a moment and reflect on how precious life is and that we extend our prayers and positive thoughts for an immediate end to this terrible situation and for comfort to those who are experiencing this tragic event.

"Senator Clinton is now dealing with this very difficult problem." Um, what can she possibly be doing about it or is Screamin' Dean just trying to make Hillary looks tough enough to handle this situation? I really hope she's not trying to handle this situation herself. Let the police do their job. No mention is Hillary thinks the police are doing a good job, but then again, I'm sure she will tell us that if only had more socialism and her health care system, this wouldn't have happened. I really do hope for the hostages sake, Hillary doesn't try to manage this situation.

Geesh, Tom...way to exploit a sad situation...which republican do you work for?

Tom, you and heartless Giuliani are made of the same stuff. Hillary Clinton may have political enemies, but even they seem to realize that her people are human beings. I just wish you Republicans were human also. Now I think I'll vote Democratic. I want to vote for someone with a heart.

We all know Clinton was behind the hostage crisis, just like LBJ was behind the Gulf of Tonkin, and George W. Bush was behind 9/11.

While you are insulting each other I have a question, 'where do people go when they need government help?' To the Democrats since the Republicans ignore their needs. Bush is calling for the eliminiation of the programs for port security, transit security, and local emergency which were funded by the funding for counter terrorism. Keep fighting among yourselves for you are doing exactly as the Republicans and the Global corporations want you to do. Strange that there was no question about the FORCLOSURES, or OUTSOURCING OF JOBS, or INSOURCING OF GREEN CARD HOLDERS TO DO AMERICAN JOBS, or THE OUTSOURCING OF OUR TECHNOLOGY WITH THOSE JOBS in the UTUBE Republican debate. Strange that there was one mention to the products from CHINA crammed with mention of jobs and housing crisis. I'd buy American if we had jobs and made stuff in America. But most of the manufacturing jobs left America by way of the NIXON TRADE AGREEMENT in the early 1970s and NIXONs FOREIGN TRADE POLITY (republican). What am I talking about? Not only are you blind to the past but you are blind to what is going on now. I bet you didn't even know that the FUNDING FOR COUNTER TERRORISM was being proposed for cutting in half by Bush and his administration. Remember, this is the same political party who kept cutting the funding prior to going into Iraq so our troops did not have adequate funding or equipment at that time. REMEMBER THAT MESS? REMEMBER WHEN PARENTS AND SPOUSES HERE IN THE STATES HAD TO RAISE MONEY SO THEIR MILITARY FAMILY MEMBER COULD HAVE BULLET PROOF VESTS. I know you were not paying attention, were you? What a short attention span we have in this country? Pat yoursleves on the back for democracy left our country, not with bombs and war, but with thunderous applause for the REPUBLICANS AND GLOBAL CORPORATIONS.

the guy doesnt look insane, thats the problem. you would expect it to be obvious like it is with michael jackson or rosie o'donnell. im not a conspiracy therorist by nature, but hillarys campaign has been falling apart at the seams lately. why would this guy happen to choose her campaign rather than obamas which was reportedly just across the street? if hillary gets a sympathy boost in the polls, i might be suspicious.

Anyone who believes this is for real will believe anything the Clintons say. Truth will out. Watch for the bomber to be paid under the table.

If the hostage situation was a fake it's a crying shame. I can relate to this. I had insurance, went to my doctor while I was about 2 sheets in the wind. He did nothing except to put a guard on me so I couldn't leave, I easily lost the guard. But before I left the HMO facilty I went to the mental health department to see someone. I was really desparate for help, they gave me an appointment for almost 3 weeks away. I left that office feeling like I had no where to turn, thoughts of suicide were clouding my mind. If the political parties are instigating these types of sitiations they must be stopped. There are truely desparite people out there who want help and cannot get it by following the rules, so they step outside the law to get the help the need. It works every time. Most of these people do not have police records until they make that very desparate cry for help.
