Clinton's Tipping Point?

Share

November 08, 2007 9:43 AM

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: Rule number one when campaigning at a diner: always leave a good tip -- and, apparently, make sure it gets properly 'disbursed'.

In early October, Sen. Hillary Clinton's 'Middle Class Express' made a pit stop at the Maid Rite diner in Marshalltown, Iowa.

The New York senator, joined by local political luminaries Christie Vilsack and Ruth Harkin, enjoyed a famous loose meat sandwich and attempted to hand caucus cards to the Iowans inside.

Clinton also spoke to one of the diner's waitresses, Anita Esterday. It was her first day on the job and she and Clinton shared a short exchange. Esterday, who has three jobs and works 12 hour shifts, said to Clinton "both of my sons have worked since they were 14 years old"; Clinton told her, "I'm proud of you."

But, according to Esterday, that's where Clinton's gratitude ended as the campaign crew left with nary a gratuity for any of the hard working Maid-Riters.

"I mean, nobody got left a tip that day," Esterday said in an interview with NPR after a visit by Senator Clinton.

UPDATE: The Clinton campaign contacted ABC News to assert that they did, contrary to Esterday's claim to NPR, pay $157 for food at Maid-Rite and left a $100 tip to be split among the staff.

Sensing the story was reaching the tipping point, ABC News' Eloise Harper contacted Brad Crawford, manager of Maid-Rite caught in the political mixer, who said the senator's staff did pay a tip but "it might have not been disbursed properly."

The NPR report claimed the meal was on the house.  And even the Emily Post Institute doesn't have anything to say on the etiquette of presidential campaign tipping.  (Post does, however, have something so say about the National Anthem -- a sore subject in the Obama camp these days).

"I don't think she understood at all what I was saying," Esterday continued to tell NPR. "Afterwards it was like do you guys live in the real world, maybe they don't carry money, I don't know."

Esterday's assertion may be a bipartisan one: earlier this year, former Governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass., who holds a fortune estimated between $190-$250 million found himself sans wallet and without the means to pay for his vanilla steamer at a campaign stop in DeWitt, Iowa.

But an allegedly tip-less visit wasn't Esterday's only complaint.

"As for all of this attention on me, it hasn't helped my life, its made my life worse," added the Maid-Rite waitress.

Esterday's picture with the Senator also landed in a local newspaper. Her employer at the nursing home is not a Clinton fan and, since the photo appeared, the waitress claims her shifts have been reduced; she suspects the picture in the paper was the reason.

Despite everything, Esterday did take Clinton's pitch to heart: she's still deciding whether to support Clinton or Obama.

My crowd always tips not less than 20%, plus another buck or two per person and more for premium service. In many cases, this cash goes for more than the sweet smile, being distributed to bus boys, dish washers, floor sweepers... And she wants to control the country's purse strings. Tells me all I need to know. The key concept is a 'failure' of consideration.

Hey - When all your concerned about is taking over the world with your evil minions who has time to worry about tipping! This is just something getting in her way to her ultimate goal - POWER! A real genuine individual is always thinks of others - this is the golden rule by which we live. For those of you who make excuses for Hillary by saying she is sooo busy then you miss the point totally! When your a public servant its your JOB to think of others. Hillary needs to go back and learn this valuable rule of life!

Well according to other sources she left a $100 dollar tip, so maybe one of the other waitresses or the manager pocketed it.

Wow, thanks to a great one-sided story! Does anyone think the news will follow up with an apology to Clinton if she can prove she left a tip? It was a large party and some sort of management would have approved Clinton's free meal, maybe the rest of the staffers who paid for the rest of it included a tip that was supposed to be handed out to all involved? It's too confusing now-adays with the tipping. Half the restaurants I go in to it's unclear whether you tip or not. Maybe someone else actually brought the meal to Clinton and this lady only brought her a glass of water before Hillary started chatting her up. Everyones got to complain about something!

Clinton camp has reported they left a >60% tip.

Regardless of whether it is a Dem or Rep, is there some conflict of interest in leaving an exorbitant tip at the same place that you are handing out caucus cards? There must be some rules about that sort of thing.

It may have been more appropriate if Hillary had visited a Waffle House. The woman is an elitist, condescending, self-absorbed know-it-all. As for Obama, he is a another version of "lip Biting Bill" who feels our pain and promises solutions to every ailment under the sun. He should know that in the real world, the president doesn't possess some mystical powers that turns him into Mary Poppins. He has no practical leadership experience. Like Hillary, he lacks the backbone and the experience needed to lead this country in the dangerous times we live in. Frankly, he and all of his liberal Dem counterparts lack a backbone; I'm surprised that he and his fellow liberal Dems can walk upright.

This woman sounds like just another publicity leach trying to milk her 5 seconds of fame for way more than it's worth. Her hours were reduced for appearing in a picture with a presidential candidate?!? Give me a break! If that is actually the case (which I doubt it is), she should look into legal action against the management for discrimination (although I've never heard of discrimination based on being in a picture with an ex-first lady). Whether or not you support Clinton, you HAVE to admit that this is a transparent case of some backwoods hick trying to cash in on one iota of publicity.

TIPS SHOULDNT BE COUNTED AS INCOME??? You got to be kidding me? Wait a minute. First of all, she is below the poverty line as it is, so she pays zero taxes or a pittance. Second of all, her reported income is already underreported, and IRS allows them to only claim 8% or whatever.... Do you think she reports the cash tips? Third, they are paid $2 an hour by their employer... So by your logic, poor little waitress should get tips tax free, but because I have a real job *i use that loosely*, where my wages come 100% from the employer I must shoulder the countries tax burden even more than what little "servers" contribute to the tax rolls?

Well okay, I'll give you your free tip income when you apologist libs say I can have my stock sales capital gains tax free.

Well look on the bright side. If that waitress had been from Chinatown, not only would she have been stiffed but she would have had to contribute $2,000 to Hillary's campaign.

And for those who don't click on the Romney link, when he had no wallet after getting a cup of coffee...

"I've only got three [dollars] in this pocket. I left my wallet in the car," Romney said before an aide approached. "Here comes Will … look at this he's gonna give me a five. Thanks."

So - five (or eight?) bucks for coffee for Republicans, free loose meat and no tip for Democrats.

She wants to give illegal aliens and terrorists state driver licenses...and her staff is so dense they can't tip a mother working several jobs at minimum wage...hmmm...not presidential material to me.

"Clinton camp has reported they left a 60% tip."

I can verify that, 60% of nothing is still nothing.

Hillary wasn't looking at the waitress as a human being, she was a potential sound bite, nothing more, nothing less. Bill Clinton in a dress.

My son worked at the Benson Hotel in DT Portland Oregon during one of the Clinton stays during his presidency. He worked in the kitchen and witnessed (overheard) Hilary "tearing a new one" out of the chef on duty. She was complaining about the prices of room service! Attacking him was outrageous... he had nothing to do with setting the prices. Obviously she has problems controlling her anger. I don't think this is a small issue, because it reveals her true nature. Based on this and other incidents, I think her attitude towards all the "regular" people is that she is our superior. She lacks the true compassion she always professes to have. Do we want this cold-hearted, power-hungry person running the country? No way.

Posted by: Portland NeoCon | Nov 8, 2007 11:59:50 AM

In fairness to Clinton, the meal was on the house? So let me get this straight, the Clinton campaign DIDN'T pay anything and DIDN'T pay a tip. Talk about Clinton wanting both sides of an issue.

Posted by: SoonerJJ | Nov 8, 2007 12:01:01 PM

Btw, wait staff are not taxed as if they get 17% in tips. Check the damn IRS regulations.

Posted by: Brad | Nov 8, 2007 12:01:30 PM

So Hillary told the waitress "I am proud of you?????" How patronizing is that? I would have gone through the roof if I were that waitress. I don't want my politicians to pat me on the head and tell me how proud they are of me, or what a good girl I am. Ohh, that steams me.

According to Drudgereport: **Clinton campaign official: 'The campaign spent $157 and left a $100 tip at the Maid-Rite Restaurant'

If that is true that Hillary left a $100 tip on a $157 check it is indicative that she is either:
1. into wasteful spending
2. attempting to influence people in her favor with egregious amounts of cash
3. misusing campaing funds
4. misusing taxpayer's dollars (if applicable)
5. all of the above

Regardless, anyone who gives $100 on a $157 check is someone who shows poor judgement. I'd hate to see what she does with American taxpayer's money if this is indicative of her spending habits! Cheers, vox populi

Why would she tip. This is the women who tried to claim old rotten underwear that she gave to charity. Also tried to rob the whitehouse on the way out the door stealing furniture and art that belonged to the people then forced to return them. Also married to the man who was found to be the greatest illegal campaign fund holder of all time. And married to the only person running for office (when Govenor) who was sued for blocking black people from voting.

The meal was complimentary? This is the official response? Tells me not tipping was no accident. Why not say, "Oops, oversight on our part. We'll send her a check"? You'd think that knowing they'd be stopping at restaurant after restaurant on the campaign tour, there'd be someone in charge of making sure these things get done. I've known and worked for the rich. They really don't look at working folks as actual people, just entities in their service. If I were a millionaire political candidate, I wouldn't accept complimentary meals or anything else. I'm a poor person. I rarely go out to eat, but I always leave 20% when I do. I've been given restaurant certificates as gifts. It would never occur to me that a free meal means I don't need to leave a tip.

Posted by: Lynn | Nov 8, 2007 12:06:01 PM

first read on msnbc has an updated account of what happened.

"The manager of the of the restaurant tells First Read the Clinton campaign did, in fact, tip. "They paid their bill, and they left a tip," said Brad Crawford, manager of the Maid Rite restaurant in Toledo, Iowa. "Everybody was satisfied. No question about it."

Just a FUD bashing story
