Congress Poised to Override Bush Veto

ABC News' Ann Compton Reports: For the first time, Congress is poised to override a Bush veto, at a time of tension and frustration between the two branches of government.

The bill, which President Bush ridiculed in recent remarks, spends $23-billion on popular water projects all over the country.

The White House calls the water resources bill "irresponsible" -- costing billions more than the President believes reasonable.

But this is likely to be a losing battle for the President. This time, both the House of Representatives and the Senate have enough votes to override the veto and make the water bill law.

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., said Friday the House would move quickly to nix Bush's veto.

"The 110th Congress has worked to develop a Water Resources Development Act that ensures the continued viability of America's water resources and infrastructure," Hoyer said in a statement released to the media.

"Yet the President, who is desperately trying to reestablish his credentials with his conservative base at the expense of good policy, has vetoed this critical bill," he said.

Hoyer said the House will vote to override the President's veto on Tuesday.

I wish Congress was poised to impeach Bush and cheney. Both should be sent to a rendition camp for their crimes they committed against this great nation.

it's about time repubs got some guts and stand for something other than cronyism. GW worrying about wasteful spending may want to stop being so wasteful himself. Spending into the trillions in Iraq? Repubs should be ashamed of that idiot

Under Bush's 'leadership' the U.S. Treasury debt has gone up more than 35%. Appalling. This week it passed $9 trillion dollars.

Why is it we can over-ride a water bill, but not an insurance bill for our children?
