Is Mitt Romney Really a Red Sox Fan?

November 28, 2007 10:58 PM

ABC News' John Berman Reports: The Former Massachusetts governor, who presided over the hub of Red Sox Nation for 4 years, and was Governor of the state in 2004 when they staged their epic, history- changing comeback and finally triumphed in the World Series, botched one of the holiest, most sacrosanct numbers in Red Sox lore.

At the close of the GOP debate in St. Petersburg, FL, Mitt Romney spoke of the 2004 World Series Championship: "Eighty-seven long years. We waited 87 long years. And true suffering Red Sox fans that my family and I are, we could not have been more happy than to see the Red Sox win the World Series." The only problem with that statement? It was 86 years between Red Sox victories. 86 years! 1918 to 2004. That makes 86 years.

It is a number that millions of Red Sox fans know by heart. It is a number that many kids in Massachusetts know before they can even count.

What does this say about the Governor? His authenticity has been questioned on several issues: abortion, gay rights, gun control. Is his alleged Red Sox fan-dom also now in question? Romney, who was born and raised in Michigan, did once refer to Fenway Park as "Red Sox Stadium."

Sources close to Romney say he realized his mistake immediately after the debate. Romney Spokesman Kevin Madden, a native New Yorker, had only this to say, "as a Yankee fan…we’ve won so many world series, that I have hard time keeping count."

86 years versus 87 years. Horror of horrors! Mr. Berman, pipe down and get a grip. You clearly need to switch to decaf.

shaun could use a bit less red bull too.

This is a nuance that counts unfortunately Shaun. When Bush I couldn't tell us the price of bread, we learned how far removed his rich genes were from the average bloke, and what did he win in the next election? (GOOSE EGG)

Romney a fake candidate? Do you need baseball to determine that? Take a look at that fake face, doo, and smile. He's one of the fakest people running. McCain is real! A real goofball! (bomb bomb bomb Iran? What a dumb thing for a presidential candidate to joke about). Giulliani is a real goon. Huckabee is a real hick, Paul seems to be the only real constitutionalist, and that old fart Fred Thompson is a bad campaign for Viagra. But they arent any worse than Fake Clinton, Obama, Bill Richardson, Edwards, Biden, or Dodd.

Kucinich is too real for most fake folks. He is the only candidate in the DNC to have the nerve to call for the impeachment of Dick Cheney while the others sat back and...were fake!

He has House Res. 333 in play and some Real folks have signed on, while Fake reps have faked you out into believing they are doing anything.

Romney won tonight at the GOP CNN Youtube debate in Florida.

What a dirty liar Romney is? He's not even a baseball fan, let alone a Red Sox fan. No genuine baseball fan would ever forget that it was 86 years between World Championships for the Red Sox or ever call Fenway Park Red Sox Stadium. This was as bad as when Hillary Clinton said she's been a lifelong Yankee fan when she's from Chicago and there's a tape of a Cubs game in which she's wearing a Cubs cap and tells Harry Caray that she was a lifelong Cubs fan. Let's face it. Politicians, especially in the U.S. lie for a living and wouldn't tell the truth if their life depended on it.

In the big scheme of things, Romney's 87-year gaffe is about as important and meaningful as John Kerry asking in 2004 that some swiss cheese be put on his Philly cheesesteak sandwich. And Romney's Red-Sox-Stadium gaffe is about as important and meaningful as Kerry in 2004 erroneously referring to Lambeau Field as Lambert Field.

In 2004, the GOP spinners made a huge deal of Kerry's gaffes, and the mainstream media dutifully talked about those gaffes quite a lot.

I'm betting Romney's gaffes get significantly less media attention than did Kerry's. It seems clear to me that the mainstream media - contrary to what the conservatives always say - routinely favor Republican presidential candidates over Democratic presidential candidates.

Speaking of flip-flops, how and when did a guy born in Michigan become a long-suffering Red Sox fan? Why didn't he root for the Tigers?

"Sources close to Romney say he realized his mistake immediately after the debate."

Tough reporting there. Tough, skeptical reporting. Unnamed flacks working for Romney said their boss realized his error. Do you people even TRY journalism any more, or just stenography?

Romney is a fake. Now he's talking about "change". Who ever votes for him has been sucked in haha.

Im confused. One minute Romney is talking about his experience at being able to take on Clinton, (the Olympics in particular which is no kind of experience in my book.) Then the next he's talking about Obama and Him being the "agents of change". He's a FAKE!

Huckabee will split the vote and we will end up with McCain as the Republican candidate. He is too liberal on so many things. I can't imagine him representing me and a large portion of Americans that feel we need smaller government, safer boarders, to maintain our personal freedoms, to be responsible for taking care of ourselves and taking care of those who CAN'T. I don't think he represents Americans that want a moral man with integrity that is loyal to those who put him in power by continuing to represent their ideals even after being elected. I don't think he represents Americans who feel like we need to get our trade deficits undercontrol, work out the other problems with China, and keep our jobs here in America. I am sorely disappointed that so many can't see that McCain does not represent what our party stands for. I also feel like he is too old and not at the top of his game. He doesn't have the stamina or longevity to take this country where it needs to go and to maintain our resolve as conservative Americans. I am worried about where our party is going. Where ever the leaders go the people follow also.

I won't vote for McCain.

GO TO THE WEBSITE ACTIONFUND@DEFENDERS.ORG

To see the real Sarah Palin, I call her the IM--PALIN--ATOR, see what kind of monsterous gun toting "B" she really is. There are accusations of illegal hunting by the State Wildlife Agency.
She is beholden to the pro-aerial hunting lobbyists. Her husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum)!!
NOW YOU SEE WHAT CAUGHT McSHAME'S ATTENTION ON THAT ONE MEETING SIX MONTHS AGO. CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE REPORTERS?

Why is Palin's approval of (even brief membership in) a secessionist party not treasonous -- 100 times worse than any of the other stuff about her people are complaining of?

It shows her to be totally anti-American. Where is our responsible journalism?
