Obama Jokes About Travel Gaffe
November 07, 2007 4:04 PM
ABC News' David Wright Reports: At an "unscheduled" stop at the Dairy Bar in Wappelo, Iowa Wednesday, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., answered questions about his travel gaffe that delayed his appearance at a campaign event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Tuesday night.
"We just overflew the runway by 150 miles," he grinned.
Obama said they only realized what had happened when the Secret Service failed to materialize on the tarmac.
"Usually they pull the cars up pretty quick," he said.
Obama's pilot flew right past Cedar Rapids -- where he was supposed to land -- touching down in Des Moines instead.
The mistake put the normally punctual Obama at least 45 minutes late for his town hall meeting in Cedar Rapids, angering some residents who were waiting to hear him speak.
At the stop Wednesday, Obama bought a small vanilla ice-cream cone. While enjoying his soft serve, Obama talked with a store clerk who lost her husband in the Iraq war in May of 2004.
Obama was also approached by two veterans, one an 83 year old World War II veteran.
Obama joked, while licking his ice-cream cone, "you look good, I gotta follow you around and see what you're eating."

so obama thinks that people who are 60 and over are too old to change anything? ... he has more problems than just a fly-over in Iowa. Hopefully both Hillary and Edwards will do better than him in Iowa and maybe humble him a little.

Obama,The Junior senator missed 88 votes. and been senetor TWO YEARS. I do not know how he will explain that to the people from his state.

Yeah, that's a way to win Iowans over. We just love it when candidates don't realize there's more than one airport in the whole state.

Just another Dumb Obama moment.

What a worthless waste of gas and ice cream.

I don't understand why Obama is getting the criticism for the pilot's error. He's actually not my candidate of choice, but I don't think he's a bad guy. The PILOT screwed up which made Obama and his staff 45 minutes late getting to the meeting...geez, at least they went. A lot of politicians wouldn't have made the effort. Just because you may choose not to vote for a particular candidate doesn't mean that you have to spit venom, make mountains out of molehills and create drama where there is none. If you want to attack a candidate, attack them on issues.

NJP, Ah, a voice of reason. So rare these days. No, Obama should not be held responsible for the error of the pilots. I'm sure he wasn't in the cockpit & did what we all do when on a plane, expecting it to go where it was supposed to go. Maybe the pilots had the wrong information and filed a flight plan that would account for their landing where they did. But Obama personally responsible, NOT! RE: joking with the vets, it was anything but a put down. As a senior I recognize that kind of humor. Put away your hatred and be decent for a change. If I were a Dem. I'd vote for him. And no doubt will if he makes it to the "final" round.

The normal everyday person would be under the impression that taking the time to get insights on this subject of thought is a waste of resources.
