Obama Says Flag Flap a Dirty Trick
November 07, 2007 3:18 PM
ABC News' David Wright and Sunlen Miller Report: At a town hall meeting Wednesday an Iowa voter asked Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., about the numerous emails she has received with photos purporting to show Obama "refusing" to pledge allegiance to the flag.
"You're standing with your arms folded and Hillary's got her hand on her heart," she said, adding that she received so many of these emails she is sick of them.
Obama shook his head and smiled.
"This was not during the pledge of allegiance," Obama said of the picture taken at Senator Tom Harkin's, D-Iowa, annual steak fry and first published by Time. "A woman was singing the Star Spangled Banner when that picture was taken.
See the original photo by clicking here.
"I was taught by my grandfather that you put your hand over your heart during the pledge, but during the Star Spangled Banner, you sing!" Obama said.
ABC News has video of the event in question which can be viewed by clicking here.
Obama called the circulation of such pictures a "dirty trick" and mentioned other emails accusing him of being "a Muslim plant."
"I have been pledging allegiance since I was a kid," Obama said.
Obama advised his supporters who receive such emails to ignore them.
"Just tell whoever sent it," Obama told the crowd, "they're misinformed."

BO with a flag? He turned his in. Said he wasn't that patriotic. Now a giant flag? He's not very good at staying on message.

To use Bill Clinton's analogy regarding how the other Democrats are "piling on" in their attacks on Hillary....Obama's enemies are trying to "Swiftboat" him.

I put my hand on my heart during the Star Spangle- it is out of respect.

Some people say, "a Republican? I'd never vote for a Republican." Let me remind you folks that Abraham Lincoln, who freed the slaves, and who won the war to preserve our Union, WAS himself a Republican. Would you have voted for Stephen Douglas, who was ardently pro slavery, against Lincoln simply because he was a Democrat? Of course you wouldn't. It's the person your voting for, and the ideas he or she represents, NOT the party.
Ron Paul represents a different Republican Party from the one that Iraq, deficits and corruption have soured the country on. The Republican party has "lost its way," he said recently, during a GOP debate. Like the limited federal government principles espoused by Dwight D. Eisenhower, his school of Republicanism stands for a certain idea of the Constitution that much of the power asserted by modern Presidents has been usurped from Congress, and that much of the power asserted by Congress has been usurped from the States.
Though Paul acknowledges flaws in both the Constitution (it included slavery) and the Bill of Rights (it doesn't go far enough), he still thinks a comprehensive array of positions can be drawn therefrom: against gun control; for the sovereignty of States; and against foreign-policy adventures like the ones currently being played-out in the Mid-East. After ten terms of service as a U.S. Congressman, Ron Paul has demonstrated a consistent track record of adherance to The Constitution, unmatched by anyone in either party.

If one goes to a baseball stadium and the Star Spangled Banner is played, 60,000 or so will put their hands on their hearts.
I do not think this was from any Democratic. I belong to all of their email lists and have not received one yet.

I have been pledging allegiance to American for decades and I agree with Sen. Obama - that's when I put my hand over my heart. I never put my hand over my heart during the national anthem - I sing.
I also read elsewhere that the US Military code states that you only place your hand over your heart during the pledge, and not the national anthem.

Ya know if the candidates were as concerned with how to handle the problems of our country it might help --- let's get out the the bush/Rovian way of running an election -- that just bankrupt a good country economically, emotionally
Elections should be run on the merits of the contenders not on their foibles.

Obama is a patriot and I trust him.

I went to 13 Yankee games this year, and whenever they did the National Anthem, at every game, only about 2% of the people there put their hand on their heart. Gotta love the dirty tricks people.

Obama is not the candidate that I would like to see win the nomination for president. He does not have the intelligence, ability or experience. Obama may be young in age but he is not John F. Kennedy by no means. Kennedy was a highly educated individual and had qualified experience to become president. Edwards cannot make it either. No matter how much both of them try to bash Hillary. Plus I can't imagine Obama or Edwards discussing world matters world leaders. World leaders would think America is playing some kind of a joke. United States need a well qualified person to become president and Hillary already has that being the first lady for 8 years. What does Obama and Edwards have? Nothing!!

Comments against Hillary? Is it jeaousy because she progressed in life and they did not. Well, you make life what it is and if you didn't strive to get ahead that's your problem. Hillary is a very smart women and she will win the nomination. She is leading her rivals and Giuliani in the polls. Obama can put out all the Ads he wants against her because he so so desperate to win but it will not change her percentage. Hillary is in to win like she stated and she will win. Let Obama bit his nails along with Edwards. And if anyone belongs in the kitchen its Obama's RUN OF THE MOUTH WIFE!!

When I was in school and in scouts in the 1950's, we were explicitly instructed to stand at attention when the anthem was played - NOT to place our hands over our hearts which was reserved for reciting the Pledge. I wonder when the standard changed, and whether Obama is simply following the form that he was taught.

I go to lots of sporting events and I don't think I have ever seen anyone put their hand on their heart during the National Anthem. I have seen people remove hats and put it over their heart but that's about it. Hillary and the others were confused.

To Marrianne Peppitone. Where did you get your facts about Obama's education, intelligence, etc because NOBODY agrees with you? Actually, many of the top people in the national security, diplomatic and other very experienced policy people in government WANT Obama to win the presidency.
Posted by: Ellen Hamm | Nov 7, 2007 9:27:32 PM
Uh Jordan no you weren't,
Scouts are instructed that you stand at attention and place your hand (or hat) over your heart for the national anthem. That has always been the standard.
Posted by: Hacksaw | Nov 7, 2007 9:28:05 PM
Obama is right, there is no point in putting you hand over your heart for the Anthem, you are not pledging or promising anything.

Protocol
When the song is performed in public, it is customary for American citizens to stand and face the American flag, if one is displayed, in an attitude of respectful attention.[6] If no flag is on display, it is customary to stand and face the source of the music in the same respectful attitude of attention as if the flag were on display. People are also encouraged to remove their hats during the performance. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, military personnel, fire service, and law enforcement officers in uniform normally salute during the national anthem from the first note and hold the salute until the last note is played. Civilians who are citizens of the United States often salute by placing their right hand over their heart.

As a military member, when in uniform one salutes during the National Anthem and places ones hand over their heart when played or removes their hat and places it over their heart. Not arms crossed. Still seems anti-patriotic to me.

The Star Spangled Banner? Just as bad. Shame on Obama. He's not a patriot and he does no good for that Country.
