Romney Defends Marriage Stance Amid Cheers, Boos
November 01, 2007 3:18 PM
ABC News Matt Stuart Reports: Fmr. MA Gov. Mitt Romney got both support and criticism during an appearance at a liberal arts college in Decorah, IA.
After opening up to questions, Romney was asked by student Craig Keisler from Urbandale, IA, about his position on the Federal Marriage Amendment. Romney began to explain that “only one of the four leading" Republican candidates (in his view defined as Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, John McCain and himself)) favor a federal amendment to define marriage as being between a man and woman.
Many clapped while a row of student in the audience began to boo at his answer.
Romney went on to say that gay couples should "be free" to live together. Keisler later said that he appreciated that, but that he did not agree with Gov. Romney on the issue
Romney also received some laughter from the audience when he suggested that Republican candidates avoid colleges because liberal professors are "indoctrinating" student. "I do think it’s helpful to have Republican candidates get out and speak to student bodies across the country," Romney said. "We tend to say, oh they’ve been so indoctrinated by their liberal faculty friends in some cases, that may not be true here at Luther, but at some college, that we just sort of write it off." Romney emphasized that he planned on visiting schools.
Iran remained a central focus for Romney, saying that "the world can't accept" to have a nuclear Iran and that, regarding Russian involvement in Iran, that Russian President Vladimir Putin looks like he's "heading down the same dark path as authoritarian rulers in Russia's past."
Romney also continued his calls for aggressive action on foreign trade saying that if "there are markets that won't let our goods in on a fair basis, you push 'em in there."
On healthcare, Romney stated that while he wouldn't mandate the Massachusetts plan on the rest of the country, he would "like to see everyone in the system." Romney has faced some criticism for the Massachusetts plan's mandate that all citizens obtain event insurance.

I really admire Mitt Romney he stands up for what he believes in regardless of what the political consequences are. I respect him for standing tall on his religion and family values and for not tailoring his speaches or answers to which audience he is speaking to. He is by far the most qualified Presidential candidate this country has had in at least 175 years. He has both a law and business degree and graduated both times at the very top of his class. He has turned around many companies heading for bankruptcy like Dominoes Pizza and Staples and took the helm and rescued the corruption filled Salt Lake Olympics and turned it into the most successful winter Olympics in history. He got health care passed as governor of Mass, and gave Ted Kennedy a run for his life for the senate race. Quite an accomplishment in a state that is like 80% democratic and where Ted Kennedy is more loved than clam chowder. Do not count this man out or in anyway under estimate him as he will be our next President. Mark my words.

Mr. A's comment made me laugh out loud. If there is any candidate (on either side) who tailors his positions to suit the political winds it's Mr. Romney. When running for the Senate in Massachusetts campaigned to the left of Sen. Kennedy, as Governor he fashioned himself into a moderate and now as a Republican candidate he is holding himself out as the champion of the right. With that history he can only claim the title of the chameleon candidate. As for his business experience, I recall Bush-Cheney touting their business expertise saying they would bring corporate efficency to the Oval Office. If they are an indication of what business acumen can do in the executive branch then we need to steer well clear of all business men running for the White House.

All politicians tailor their messages to some degree, ALL of them. Romney's stances are actually remarkably consistent with the one major issue he has changed his position on being abortion. As far as business acumen, what real business experience did Bush have? And Cheney had spent years in the department of defense, that's probably why he became CEO of Haliburton. Romney is a businessman head and shoulders above Bush and Cheney and has actually been tremendously successful with his businesses.
Also, Romney is a Washington outsider. He hasn't been ruined by the Washington culture. Bush/Cheney definitely were insiders. There's no comparison here.
I think Romney's real strength is his executive experience. I think he could really do wonders as president in restructuring the federal government and bringing accountability and change to Washington--like an auditor.

It is complete garbage that Romney ran to the left of Ted Kennedy. All you have to do is look at any of the campaign literature from the campaign at that time and you will see he ran as a conservative.
The only stance that Romney has changed on is abortion and that happened while Governor years previous to this campaign.
So who would you rather have run the country than a business man? An academic? a lifetime politician? An attorney? The reason that they are in those jobs is that the can't lead others in a succesful venture. The country is a business and needs to be run by someone that has managed and more importantly led large groups of people before. Every department is just another business unit.....
This country was started by merchants, businessmen who were unhappy with having their opportunities limited by a class of people that never had to work. Nothing has changed about our attitudes today.

Emtee is absolutely right. The only liberal position Romney took when running in 1994 was on abortion. By the time he took any action on life issues as Governor, he took a pro-life position every single time. This whole flip flop thing comes from people who are either distorting truth on purpose, or they are ignorant of the facts.

The reason we have had so many ethical and immoral problems in the United States is because we have had been led by the wrong people in the pasts.Mitt Romney deserves the Presidents job because of his endless pursuit to protect marriage as only between a man and a womam,as well as his standing on the side of life for the unborn infant. These are remarkable issues Governor Romney is trying to protect and are the foundation of Christian values. He is also very intelligent and experience in leadership role as he demonstrated in his business careers and government services. He rescue a troubling Winter Olympic from financial crisis. He is a dedicated husband and father to his wife and childrens and grandchildrens he is the right kind of leader we desperately need.
