Thompson Black Friday Shops at Gun Store
November 23, 2007 4:42 PM
ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson squeezed in a little Black Friday shopping and sampled homemade moose chili at a local gun shop in Bristol, New Hampshire.
At Skip’s Gun and Sports store, dubbed “Daycare for Men” on their signature red shirts, the GOP hopeful admired different types of guns and talked about his support for the 2nd Amendment. He said some of his opponents have “bad records or no records” on the issue of gun ownership and rights.
Thompson -- who said he used to own a skeet shoot –- accused the Democrats for ignoring gun ownership rights, and also blamed former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for siding with them, particularly on the assault weapons ban. He even supported just about every gun control legislation that came down the pike,” Thompson charged. “I saw that he was at bill signing ceremonies with [New York Sen.] Chuck Schumer and President [Bill] Clinton and others, you know, for gun control legislation over the years and was very outspoken about it. Course he’s not outspoken about it anymore.”
In response to Thompson's remarks, Giuliani Communications Director Katie Levinson said in an e-mail: "Mayor Giuliani is a strong supporter of the second amendment and believes our focus should be on making sure criminals are the ones who can't get guns."
Thompson also said there is “a lot of game left to play” before the Jan. 8 primary. He noted that his campaign has to translate “broad base support into more focused areas,” like New Hampshire, where he is behind in the latest polls. "We're getting ready to start the fourth quarter, and we’re ready for that,” Thompson said.
Taking advantage of the store's 20 percent off sale, Thompson spent some time looking for gifts for his two young children. He picked out purple gloves for daughter Hayden, saying, “that’s her favorite color,” and a small camouflage shirt for his baby son, Sammy.
As the cashier rang him up, Thompson commented that residents in his homestate of Tennessee don’t pay income tax, but have to pay sales tax. "We consider that one down, and one to go!” Thompson said as he fished two 20 dollar bills out of his wallet. Before exiting the store, a local hunter asked the former Senator if he liked "wild game" and handed Thompson a steaming styrofoam cup of moose chili. "Yup, that's good," Thompson said, dipping his spoon in for another bite.

When are people going to remember Thompson's role of leaking special prosecutor information to Nixon? He basically tried to Obstruct Justice! Do we still want these kind of people in the white house. For me, I have had enough!

Yeah, and when Fred Thompson was 6 months old, I hear he used to soil himself on a regular basis. Do we still want these kind of people in the white house. For me, I have had enough!

Colbert already visited a gun shop when he was a candidate. And he bought a bigger gun. Fred wants no taxes at all? At all??? Those who oppose funding the government should not run it. We used to call them anarchists. Now, we just call them Republicans - and they've proven to be just as effective as anarchists.

I support Fred Thompson. From immigration to Islamic Jihad to our 2nd Amendment rights, national security is our #1 issue. Fred is the only top tier candidate with extensive experience in foreign diplomacy and National Intelligence/International Relations. He is the candidate who best understands the threat of global Islamic jihad, as well as the threat of Islamists inside America. He has denounced CAIR's propaganda and understands the difficulty in finding "moderate" Muslims who are willing to stand up and speak out against jihad.
At home, he wants to see a return to the Federalist framework our Founding Fathers gave us, with less involvement in things that should be left to the states and their citizens, including education. He believes in fewer taxes all around, including cutting the corporate tax rate.
Most importantly, Fred Thompson has a refreshing honesty and amiability unmatched by any other candidate. He is the only one I can support without saying, "I like him, but..." With Fred, there is no nanny-statism, no flip-flopping. He is a consistent conservative who understands the limited role of the federal government in the affairs of the common man and who also understands America's role in the free world.
