White House Halls Decked in Time for International Leaders
November 26, 2007 12:42 PM
ABC News' Jennifer Duck and Ann Compton Report: President Bush met with Prime Minister Olmert in the Oval Office ahead of the Mideast Peace Conference in Annapolis. The two leaders made brief remarks after the meeting.
"I'm looking forward to continuing our serious dialogue with you and the president of the Palestinian Authority to see whether or not peace is possible. I'm optimistic. I know you're optimistic," President Bush said.
Bush thanked Olmert for his "courage and friendship" and said, "I'm proud -- proud of you."
PM Olmert said this Mideast conference is going to be different: "This time it's different because we are going to have lots of participants in what I hope will launch a serious process of negotiations between us and the Palestinians. This will be a bilateral process, but international support is very important for us," Olmert said sitting next to Bush.
The Abbas photo op occurred with numerous White House Christmas decorations prominently displayed in the background. The mantle in the shot is decked with fresh green trimmings though the Christmas tree -- not known as a 'Holiday Tree' at the White House -- is out of camera range when Bush is seated with his first two seasonal guests: the Israeli and the Palestinian.
The White House Christmas tree was delivered today. First Lady Laura Bush was at the door when the 19-foot fir arrived by horse-drawn sleigh. The Oval Office tree, as well as smaller trees around the White House, were put in place this weekend for a series of visiting leaders from the Middle East.
