Clinton Goes on the Attack in Iowa
December 03, 2007 2:02 PM
ABC News' David Wright and Eloise Harper Report: At the Surf Ballroom Monday in Clear Lake, Iowa, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., confessed her love of Buddy Holly and then went straight on the attack against her political rivals.
"I'm probably dating myself," she said, but confessed she is old enough to remember Buddy Holly, Ritchie Vallens and the Big Bopper –- who performed their last gig in the room in 1959, the night their plane went down.
Today Clinton briefly suggested she cut the political speeches short and crank up "Peggy Sue." Instead she cranked up the attacks.
Without mentioning Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., by name, she all but accused him of weakness and laziness as a legislator and suggested his ambition exceeds his effectiveness.
Clinton sneered at Obama as someone "who started running for president as soon as he arrived in the United States Senate."
"How did running for president become a qualification to be president?" she demanded. "This is not a job you can learn about from a book."
Noting that Obama missed the recent vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, authorizing tougher sanctions against Iran, Clinton hammered Obama: "He didn't show up to vote. He didn't speak out in the presidential debate that night. And finally he decided to play politics and claimed that the vote he missed."
Obama and the other Democrats have all sharply criticized Clinton for voting yes on the bill –- alone among the Democratic candidates.
Clinton's harsh new tone coincides with a slight drop in the polls in Iowa, according to a Des Moines Register poll released over the weekend. Nationally she is still the frontrunner. But polls show that here in Iowa she is trailing Obama.
Obama said yesterday that the attacks are "directly related to changing political fortunes."
Today Obama launched a new website, http://hillaryattacks.barackobama.com, to document her stepped-up attacks and respond to them.
Obama's campaign is using the site to raise money as well.
"If 10,000 people donate in the next 48 hours in response, it will show our opponents that when they attack Barack Obama, it literally makes our campaign stronger," campaign manager David Plouffe says on the site.
The Obama campaign continued to counter-attack Monday, rebuking Clinton.
"Barack Obama doesn't need lectures in political courage from someone who followed George Bush to war in Iraq, gave him the benefit of the doubt on Iran, supported NAFTA and opposed ethanol until she decided to run for President," said Obama campaign spokesperson Bill Burton.
ABC News' Sunlen Miller contributed to this report.

are all of Clinton's old friends jumping ship out of shock? i don't think they are truly shocked at Hillary's behavior as they would have us believe, they are realists, and the Clinton's are finished. Barbara Streisand will probably go down with the ship.the rest want to save themselves the embarrassment

Hillary recognizes that Iowa may be suddenly slipping away, so is engaging Obama in a non-stop exhange of negatives which will bring them both down and allow Edwards to win Iowa. If Obama were to win Iowa, Clinton would immediately be in real trouble. She's not concerned about Edwards outside of Iowa because of his lack of finances and relatively low poll numbers elsewhere, but that's a dangerous game for her to be playing with a candidate as strong as John Edwards. Political campaigns are won by momentum, not money.

You're exactly right sps, hillary seems doomed at this point. Her negativity now against Obama who seems to be the most viable candidate will only harm the party. She needs to get the message to back off the negativity and underhandedness. The problem is that I don't think anyone can stop her from being who she is.

No matter how much Hillary's loyal supporters love her, and no matter how sure they are of her, there arent enough of them to get her to where they want her. Barack can get there with most if not statistically all of the independent voters, and even some of the republican voters. Because unlike Hillary, Obama doesnt offend the senses of so many.

Democrats are beginning to evaluate each candidate's potential for winning in the general election, and Hillary's in the process of becoming the first casuality because of her polorizing reputation. Barak Obama will be the next to be eliminated as Democrats realize the timidity that he's shown throughout virtually the entire nominating process reflects a shortcoming that would be fatal in the general election. The Republican smear machine would bash Obama's head in and make Democrats rue their day they put all their eggs in the "politics of hope" basket.
This campaign has proven that being a woman or a minority no longer disqualifiers an individual from being seriously considered to be President. Conversely, despite our desire for greater equality, it also takes a great deal more than being a woman or a minority to qualify someone to be President. Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama are flawed candidates for reasons that have nothing to do with their gender and race. Recognizing and culling the field of candidates based upon the recognition of such shortcomings is neither chauvanistic nor racist, it's what the nominating process is all about.

nice photo, there should be a talk bubble above her head saying " get out of my way obama or i will punch you in the nose!" as she is clenching her fist like adolf hi......oh, never mind, lol.

When it comes to being a hypocrate Hillary takes the cake!
"Obama started running for President the moment he arrived in the U.S. Senate".
Hillary started running for President the minute her husband left office(with the furniture).
She covets the Presidency so much that she moved to New York State to run for the U.S. Senate! After barely more than
one term as a Senator from New York she is running for President!
Does Hillary Clinton think that most of us are Stupid?
Her Arrogance and Dishonesty keep shining through!
Who would even consider voting for her?

Wow. I am amazed how quickly the tide is turning against Hillary. The comments in this thread would not have been seen just a couple of weeks ago.

It's onething when candidates compare themselves to another in respect to what they will bring to the table, but it's another when they start attacking character. Hillary just lowered herself big time.

Bye Bye miss American pie. Sounds like she's ganging up on her opponents. What a nasty woman.

lol, all the actors love her because they respect her acting abilities, but i dont know why, she isnt a very good actor, she cant even keep from exploding into angry tirades when she is in front of a camera!

McCain is the only candidate that can beat Hillary Clinton. The campaign surge continues.

Obama started the attacks and then he creates a website when Hillary defends herself? The guy has nothing to say, he only alludes to change but doesn't specify what that is.
There is no way he could win in the general election. Hillary has a chance and so does Biden. Still he's the golden boy of the Press who have forgotten what real journalism is and just editorialize.
I hope the American public sees through all of this and picks the candidate they truly feel deserves to serve.

Obama did not start attacks, he's only responded to and refuted statements Hills has made.

Can't believe how many people are jumping in the Obama bandwagon without even know him at all. How many of the people writing here all those great comments about Obama really know him well or trying to know him enough before they make a serious judgment. I wonder if he or any candidate for that matter will survive such overwhelming negative daily attacks from all fronts, Republicans, some Democrats and other are giving to Hillary.
Doesn't surprise me the hatred towards Hillary coming from Republicans; but what surprises me is the bitterness, poisoning comments coming from the people that are preaching "CHANGE," or supporting the "Holier than thou" candidate for change. Easy to jump into the negative attack to Hillary or the Clintons as they did before, some people hate them not matter what, as they did with Gore, Kerry, Dole, among other; and some people are quick to elevate other people without any merit as they did with G.W Bush, Gingrich, Dean and now are doing it again with Obama.
You know who are laughing out at this confrontation right? The Karl Rover of the world and all the right wingers that want to seek this opportunity to weak the Democrats. They are very good on that and it shows once again. Those forces elevated Obama to a "real contender" so they can use other weapon within the party to attack Hillary while containing Edwards -who they really fear-, they know they can take care of Obama easily!
It would be interesting to see if at the end none of them, Hillary or Obama get the nomination. Actually that will be better for the Democrats since neither of them can win the general.

Hillary has to attack because she is afraid to articulate her position on anything of substance. Sure, she'll say she likes Buddy Holly, the Red Sox (or Yankees, or whomever). She is a power-hungry, flip-flopping, opportunistic, hypocritical, manipulative liar. Her alleged experience is fluff: first lady (lady?), carpetbagger Senator, health care advocate (failed first initiative, unexplained second). She cannot be trusted.

Senator Clinton has strength to vote to name Iran Revolutionary Guard a terrorist group (ex. Red Brigade, ETA, Lashkar Jihad, Jewish Defense League, Tamil Tigers, IRA, Weathermen, Animal Liberation Front, Abu Sayyaf, Hezbollah, etc.(Wikipedia, Center for Defense Information)). Did Mr. Obama fail that political test?

To Not so slick willy,-- Anybody can tell yu hates Clinton, so your ponts against her are old and over written. Please.
To rar47<-- Obama missed the vote on Iran, a very calculated move so he didn't needed ti defend it afterwards. That guy started running for president from day one in the U. S Senate and has missed 80% of the votes. All he has done for the last couple of years is promoting his books before in Oprah, then running for President. Guess who has the rights for the movie on his books? Oprah...the sweet Oprah.
I have to admire Obamas audacity for change, he started with himself first, from a almost unknown-nobody in Illinois to God.

Say what you want about Hillary, but she has the intellect, experience and the "think-on-your-feet" qualities that BO lacks. He is not experienced on the national scene, which, in these times, is needed. He does not come across as confident in the debates. Maybe in a couple of terms in the Senate or other federal government service, BO will gain the experience, broad base knowledge and confidence he lacks now.

Indeed, the most effective means to secure a republican win in 2008 is to defeat clinton at the democratic primary. if obama wins the nomination, any republican candidate can easily beat him. the american media is being used by the gop to foster this scenario or else why did you guys use the word "sneered?" obama lacks experience, poltical savvy. period. if democrats would like to return to the white house, then they should nominate clinton. she is the national frontrunner. obama should compare his numbers vis-a-vis the republican candidates. clinton dominates both democrats and republicans. period. what's with iowa? i do not think there would be a bandwagon effect. obama may win iowa but it does not necessarily mean clinton would just hand him the nomination as if it's his birthright. considering that conservative americans are generally more racist than sexist, you will not be hearing 'happy days are here again' in 2008. so clinton or obama? it should be obama on principles, clinton on experience and political will. but clinton if you democrats want to win the presidency.
