Clinton Hostage-Taker Allegedly Cited Her Campaign Ad

ABC News' Kate Snow reports: ABC News has learned that Leeland Eisenberg -- the man accused of holding hostages at Hillary Clinton's Rochester, N.H., campaign office for six hours on Friday -- allegedly cited one of Clinton's campaign commercials when police say he entered the office and claimed to have a pipe bomb strapped to his chest.

According to sources, the campaign office intruder was complaining about insurance issues and mentioned a recent campaign ad widely seen by New Hampshire voters.

"She helped that guy, she can help me," Eisenberg allegedly told Clinton campaign staffers, referring to Joe Ward, a Clinton supporter featured in the ad.  The intruder then demanded that Sen. Clinton talk with him.   On the advice of law enforcement officials, the senator never did.

Eisenberg never actually had a bomb, authorities said, but had road flares strapped to his chest. The hostages could not see what was under his jacket and believed it could be a bomb, they added.

Joe Ward is a New Yorker who was also featured in TV ads when Clinton ran for Senate in 2000.

In the testimonial ad, which features somber piano music, Ward intones: "Let me tell you a little story.  My son Joel had a terrible illness.  He needed a bone marrow transplant that our insurance wouldn't cover and we couldn't afford.  We called Sen. Clinton and asked for help.  Her office called the next day, letting us know that the hospital was going to absorb the cost of the transplant.  Now her opponents are saying that Hillary can't be trusted?  I trusted this woman to save my son's life, and she did."

Great. So because she ran a campaign ad which highlighted her ability to get people medical care, she should be held responsible for some alcoholic psycho taking hostages at her office.

Thanks for connecting the dots, ABC.

I hadn't heard that ad before. I support Clinton and understand the healthcare crisis. But that ad is disconcerting. The hospital absorbs the cost of the transplant? Ummm. That's the root of the crisis. The hospital absorbed nothing - they just pass the cost to the other patients. That's why one aspirin costs $37. Insurance companies won't pay it, so they only pay 12cents for the aspirin and it's the patient who is stuck with the $36.88 bill for an aspirin - nevermind the rest of the hospital bill :(

Wow! Maybe she can help me pay for my medical costs from a year and a half ago that my insurance refuses to pay for because my lung disease is sooooo rare! Give me a break! She is a fraud!

I just viewed the Clinton 2000 senatorial election campaign video advertisement. Sounds like Hilary though she was the second coming of Jesus Christ! Laying her hands on ill people and letting the system cure them! Is she going to do that for everybody?

The media in this country has become so jaded they don't recognize kindness, concern and competentness when they see it, and have no empathy for a sick and delusional individual. It's really great that it all ended without anyone being physically hurt, and the offender not being beaten, tasered or shot! Surprise, surprise diplomacy actually works. It's been so absent since bush was placed in office, lots of people seem to have forgotten what it looks like.

Oh for heaven's sake! Get a grip, America. The truth is, we are each ONLY responsible for our actions and for our reactions to the actions of others. We are NOT responsible for what some other person does if we have acted in a way we consider appropriate. Hillary Clinton is not responsible for some alcoholic psycho going off the rails. It could have been anything, including a mouse running across his foot. More likely it was the 48 hours of alcohol consumption.

She was making was promises cannot keep... the guy should have known better than that. What was he thinking?

I knew there was a tie in directly to Hillary and her socialistic health care plan. She needed some serious support and here it is. She can make big hay out of this and I'm sure she will. I think the message will be something like, "My vision of socialism includes free health care for everyone and that includes mental health. With enough socialism we can all be assured that mentally ill suicide bombers won't be threatening people again. I would hate for anyone else have to go the through terror I had to endure and as a woman, I know what I am talking about. My husband Bill Clinton, who we all know and love, supports me 100% and I'm sure you will too! When we win and are back in the White House together again, you know we will work together on it."

kit: When I read the article, I thought the same thing - the hospital didn't adsorb the cost. It's everybody else that has to pay for it. She got credit for the deed that all of us have to pay for. If, on the other hand, Joel had made a plead for help, I would step up to help - but this is giving credit where there is no credit due.

Hillary is a pathetic dunce. Bill Clinton was elected promising universal health care. Congress was democratic. The public was behind it. The economy could support it. Yet her program was 100% failure. She had another 6 years to try to revive it. Nothing happened. Can somebody actually be that incompetent? Now there's an election, she feels that Americans are complete idiots to entrust her with healthcare again. No wonder she has an unworkable plan to force down people's throats. She flunked healthcare - score zero. She flunked Iraq - score zero. She flunked Iran - score zero. She even flunked a bar exam, and is a serial failure as a housewife. The woman is air-headed, dizzy, corrupt, and possibly senile - given the way she flip flops and can't get anything right. Barack Obama is a brilliant visionary leader, with a powerful brain. He graduated first in his class at Harvard. That's not easy. He gets the difficult things right.

This is horrible and irresponsible reporting on the behalf of ABC News. Hillary Clinton's ad on health care is NOT responsible for a man being pushed to an act of terrorism. Maybe your story should focus on angle of our country's health care is so pathetic that a man who truly needs mental assistance, has to go to bizarre and insane antics to get some one to take notice. The situation was tragic and ABC's spin on the events is ridiculous.

Let's see, "a Priest molested me at age 21, that made me do it;" and now "an old TV commercial made me do it." So far, everyone but his dog is being blamed.

This guy has more excuses than a 6 year old.

I really wonder if this is another Clinton stunt! Was this another plant? Can she really be trusted?

How is socialized medicine going to help anyone if the government can't even take care of war vets properly. This is heading for a disaster. If anything, the insurance and malpractice lawsuits should be overhauled to make healthcare more affordable for the patient and easier on the doctors wallets as well.

She's the biggest liar in NY. NY'ers voted for this lowlife, what morons. That's what you get when you have to many freeloaders in the state and a president who pardons thiefs for votes. Go get a job.

Hill is a born loser. If were not for Bill she would still be trying to pass her Bar Exam. If European-Americans are ignorant enough to vote her into office, then I pity America.

Hillary can placate anyone she likes, on live tv ads, or elsewhere. She still has no credibility, will never recover any credibility, and is running incredibly tight in a very lightweight field, as usual, and dropping like a stone nationally. Hillary is pretty prissy, but doomed if she is even able to make it to a general election.

Can anyone tell me what Hillary is trying to prove or what she is after?

Posted by: Daleri | Dec 1, 2007 6:39:37 PM

It is amazing what people will put in print! Someone once told me I would have more success turning a rock into a feather than changing a Stubborn, narrow minded, Conservative Republican into a rationally thinking, happy, well-adjusted human being. The Hillary haters here and on most every political post i have read - prove this point time and again.
So, to those folks who understand exactly what I am saying- continue to smile- bite your tongue and try to remember- Stupid is as stupid does. AND Thank your lucky stars you are not one of them!!
