Clinton Jabbed for Not Discussing Social Security Fixes
December 07, 2007 4:51 PM
ABC News' Raelyn Johnson: Democrat John Edwards criticized Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., on Friday for saying a day earlier that Democrats should not discuss specific Social Security fixes.
"I've said really clearly what I will do, which is not wait and figure this out later," said Edwards after speaking to the AARP in Manchester, NH.
The former North Carolina senator has proposed imposing the 12.4 percent Social Security tax on income above $200,000 while exempting income between $97,500 and $200,000. Currently, only income below $97,500 is subjected to the Social Security tax.
Clinton, who favors the creation of a bipartisan commission, thinks it is a mistake to discuss controversial reforms in public.
"I think it is a mistake for Democrats to be throwing these ideas out when we know we can't do anything unless Democrats and Republicans hold hands and jump together," Clinton said Thursday in New Hampshire.
Earlier this year, she was overheard by an Associated Press voter telling an Iowa voter that she would consider imposing the Social Security tax on those who make more than $200,000 per year. But she has declined to discuss such a fix in public.

I don't get it. Clinton says not to put forward a logical solution unless you can have backers in the Senate first. That doesn't make sense.
Edwards gives a reasonable, workable solution so the public can understand how easily we can fix Social Security. Edwards seems to be on the right track to keep us informed. The public isn't a child that need their betters in Washingon deciding everything for them. We need to be pro-active and inform our representatives of what we want them to vote for... and we can't do that without all the options on the table.
Edwards would make a positive, intelligent President.
