ABC News' Kate Snow reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign shut down a cavernous portion of Washington’s grand old train station on Thursday night to raise about $1 million -- one of her largest fundraisers for the fourth quarter of the year.

Among the 1,200 guests were families -- little girls in red velvet dresses and boys in their best holiday suits -- but there were also a fair amount of men in blue suits.  This, after all, is the mecca for lobbyists, and Clinton does not turn away their money.

Tickets for the event ranged from $250 to $2,300 apiece or $1,000 for a family.

Clinton delivered her standard stump speech -- talking about building America’s reputation overseas, reforming health care and eduction.  She received big cheers when she declared, “The era of cowboy diplomacy is over!” and, “How about appointing qualified people again for the positions they hold in the United States government?”

But Washington crowds can be tough.  More than a few people were seen checking their blackberries during Clinton’s speech.

And how can they possibly compete with Oprah?  If you can’t beat ‘em, praise ‘em.

Clinton Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters he’s glad Oprah will be out stumping for Obama this weekend.

“She has a positive impact,” McAuliffe said.  “Anybody who can get more people involved in the political process is a positive.”
