Clinton Vows to Leave Behind Bush Education Program
December 27, 2007 5:37 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper and Teddy Davis Report: Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, went further than she has in the past on Thursday in repudiating “No Child Left Behind," the landmark education measure signed into law by President Bush's during his first term.
During an unscheduled stop at the Family Diner in Ida Grove, Iowa, Clinton was met by one voter who was there with her two daughters. The woman said to Clinton: "get rid of that ‘No Child Left Behind.’ Clinton responded: ‘I intend to, I intend to, and please caucus for me.’” In the past, Clinton has taken rhetorical shots at No Child Left Behind. But prior to today, when asked for specifics, her campaign has always left the impression that what she wants to end is the law's unfunded nature - not the law itself.
The appearance of wavering by Clinton was seized on by the campaign of Democratic rival Bill Richardson. Throughout his presidential bid, the New Mexico governor has sought to distinguish himself by promising to scrap No Child Left Behind. "Senator Clinton voted for No Child Left Behind. For months she has been calling for merely reforming in it. Suddenly, she is now for getting rid of it," Richardson campaign manager Dave Contarino told ABC News. "This has become a habit for Senator Clinton.
Just last week she changed her opinion on how quickly we could remove troops from Iraq. Now, education can be added to the issues on which her position seems less rooted in principle than in politics and polls."

Who among you has not learned more information about an issue and reformed an opinion? Isn't that the American way? The current Administration has no capacity to learn as George just follow's Cheney's orders. Do you remember Dick Cheney was on the nominating committe for choosing a candidate to run for GOP President and he chose George and PICKED HIMSELF as his running mate. First time in U.S. History. I knew something was fishy from the gate with this "Hole in the Wall Gang" the Supreme Court put in the Whitehouse. The "no child left behind" program is a complete disaster. You cannot set-up standards for schools and NOT FUND PROGRAMS! George is the WAR President by his own words and THAT has nothing to do with education. Do you think the Bush Crime Family cares if a kid reads! Education is more that Laura sitting for a photo op with a book.
