Edwards Injects a little Humor with Lawyer Joke

ABC News Raelyn Johnson: Democratic presidential contender John Edwards has been labeled a slick, ambulance chaser for the 20 years he spent as trial lawyer and during a town hall in Ames, Iowa Tuesday a supporter asked Edwards what about his former job would prepare him for the presidency.

But there was one stipulation before he answered—he had to tell his favorite lawyer joke.

"I swore of lawyer jokes—but I will tell you one." The joke went like this:

"There was a lawyer who died and went to heaven and he was just 33 years old. When he got to the gates of heaven St. Peter said, ‘well we’re glad to have you we want to welcome you, but you look awfully young for your age. And the guy said, what do you mean? And St. Peter said well you’re 96 years old. He said oh you got the wrong guy I’m just 33 where’d you get 96? And he said, we added up the hours that you charged your clients with."

The audience laughed and Edwards concluded, "Now my lawyer friends are going to be mad at me for telling that joke."

Edwards turned to the more serious nature of the question, telling over six hundred people packed into a meeting room at Iowa State University why he believed he was best prepared for the White House.

"The problem we face in America today requires somebody who has fought these people and beaten them," said Edwards on defeating powerful interests. Speaking to one of the last cases he tried representing a young girl he added, "I gave her and her family the hope that they desperately need and then I turned around and walked into that courtroom and went in and gave that company hell. And what I did was get justice for that little girl and that is exactly the kind of fight and he kind of fighter that we need in America now."

We do need someone in the White House who will fight for the common man or woman or child. Edwards seems the most likely of the candidates to honestly try to make things better for the poor and middle class.
(Which is good for the country as a whole, including the rich. If the rest of us can't afford to buy, your stock or products or real estate's worth will tank.)

Edwards can tell a joke? Well that certainly qualifies him to be President now doesn't it? Face it, politicians are out of touch with the common person. The policies of those like Edwards only expand our dependence on the goverment. We have become a welfare nation that favors security over liberty & self responsibility. If we want to transfer power from the government back to the people then we need to fight for the most important piece of legislation out there today and that is the Fair Tax. Anybody who had read it and not altered it, understands how it will benefit everybody.

Edwards, as well as any leader, telling a joke now and then, is essential. A good leader should have retained their sense of humor.
Yes, the article's writer starts out flippant but ends on a good note; that Edwards is willing to fight against powerful greedy interests.
(And to all you Fair Tax fans, either your math skills are sketchy if you are a poor or middle class citizen or you're a rich person just rubbing your hands in anticipatory greed. Fair tax just doesn't add up.)

Any country that does not take care of the basic needs of its citizens, all of its citizens, is a poor country indeed. In this regard the U.S. is on the road to bankruptcy. Edwards at least realizes what is missing which is more than can be said for the republicans who hid it.

Presidential elections should not be simple personality contests, voters *should* concentrate on the candidates substance.
