Giuliani Says Iran Remains a "Substantial Threat"

ABC News’ Jan Simmonds reports:  Speaking to thousands of supporters through an internet webcast Thursday evening, Rudy Giuliani, R-N.Y., warned that Iran remained a "substantial threat" and was one that the United States "must take very seriously."

Giuliani said that while the latest National Intelligence Estimate, which was released earlier this week, shows that the intelligence agencies are "highly confident" or "have high confidence" that Iran stopped moving towards a nuclear weapon in 2003, it remains unclear what the current status is.

"They are only moderately confident that they haven’t resumed," Giuliani noted.

The Republican national frontrunner said "if the National Intelligence Estimate is correct" then the pressure the United States put on countries like Iran worked.

'It worked in 2003 to get him to back off their nuclear program,' said Giuliani.  'And what happened in 2003?  What big thing happened in 2003?  We deposed Saddam Hussein.  America showed massive military force in the country right next to Iran called Iraq.'

Giuliani made his comments from a supporter’s home in Venice, Florida, for his campaign’s second “National House Party Night.”  According to the campaign, supporters congregated in all 50 states where they logged into the webcast to watch the former New York City Mayor talk about his plans for the nation in addition to answer e-mail questions supporters sent in.

While trumpeting his campaign message that the Democrats do not understand how to handle today’s terrorist threats, Giuliani again singled out the democratic frontrunners.

“You negotiate with preconditions and you negotiate from a position of strength, so you have leverage,” said Giuliani discussing how a president should deal with adversarial nation states.

“Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards honestly don’t seem to understand that. When they say they’ll negotiate without preconditions, where they kind of, almost in a posture of almost begging to negotiate.  When you beg someone to negotiate with you who is inherently irresponsible you put yourself in a very bad situation.”

While recent national polls appearing to show his lead shrinking in the Republican race, Giuliani made no effort to draw any contrasts between himself and his fellow Republicans.  Instead Giuliani focused his comments on his own record and chose only to voice differences between himself and the Democrats.

Ladies and gentlemen.......is it just me or does this sound all too familiar? In 2003, yes Iran backed off and yes we were busy with Iraq at the time....but since you started the history lesson here, let me ask you this: WHY were we in Iraq? Just in case you don't remember the answer, it is because the same people that are trying to stretch our already thin military are the same people that were lying about "WMDs" (oh yes, I still remember the term--it was shoved down our throats for months) in Iraq.

Labeling them a "substantial threat" by agencies that have a repeated history of lying and deceiving has absolutely NO weight with me. Perhaps you should stop the rhetoric of the sitting president while you still have a little chance of saving the Republican party from extinction and try doing the unthinkable......."staying the course" of reparing the massive damage done by the sitting president that has the entire international community rolling their eyes!

A more substantial threat to our peace and well being, not to mention our liberty, would be a Giuliani presidency.

Giuliani's foreign policy "advisor" is Norman Podhoretz, a true prophet of peace.

Since Giuliani is hanging on the thread of the "moderately confident" finding on renewing Iran's nuclear program, it seems what is needed is to ask the question of what it would take to get that rating up to highly-confident.
That's a good question.
Anyone following the parallels between the IAEA repports and this NIE estimate knows that the answer is the same in both cases.
The IAEA says it cannot be highly confident until Iran restores the Additional Protocol provision of the NPT to allow unannounced searches.
Iran worked under that AP for two years and only stopped when the IAEA sent Iran's case to the Security Council.
Success for the IAEA, and bringing the NIE knowledge-level of no future weapons program to a highly-confident level can BOTH be accomplished by returning the Iran dossier to the IAEA, where it belongs.

Within the last year, Rudy stood before the TV cameras defending Bernard Kerik and Monsignor Alan Placa, two devoted friends accused of unconscionable crimes. Kerik was Rudy's mayoral chauffeur and ended up being commissioner of the New York Police Department, a partner in Rudy's consulting firm and Rudy's nominee to President Bush for director of the Department of Homeland Security. Then there is Rudy's dear old friend Monsignor Alan Placa. A recent ABC News story cited Placa as employed at Giuliani Partners, "though he's been credibly accused by a Long Island grand jury of both covering up and engaging in child abuse," of two former teenage students and an altar boy. The report noted that Placa toured Italy recently with Rudy and his latest wife. Rudy has distanced himself from buddy Kerik, he has stayed loyal to Placa, saying on YouTube: "I know the man. I know who he is, so I support him."

As a prosecutor, Giuliani dismisses the investigators, prosecutors and the Suffolk County grand jury's acceptance of the multiple witnesses whose testimony of Placa's abuse was accepted as trustworthy. The grand jury determined that Placa suppressed valid child abuse complaints, asking that victims not be told he was a lawyer and bragging, in print, that the diocese he counseled had the "lowest ratio of losses to assets of any diocese." In dismissing the judgment of the grand jury, Giuliani dismissed the extensive evidence the panel had analyzed and adjudicated. Now, we find out he hides money paid to his security detail so that know one knows he is cheating on his wife. There is only one person that I would vote for, the one person who tells the truth, never voted to raise taxes, and voted against the illegal and immoral Iraq invasion. Restore the Republic vote for Ron Paul

And Rudy's source/proof of this latest claim is???? Gee, maybe it's the same source who appears in his dreams each night to give him the wacked out and highly IN-accurate percentages he spews out in each of his speeches!

Guiliani has ZERO chance of making it out of the primaries! Good riddance!

Giuliani needs to learn his history.
He's a fool and will be another oppressor of the American people.

How does Rudy know that IRAN is still a "credible threat"? Does he get briefings from the White House that even the Congress and Senate are not privy to? and who would believe them anyway. Just saying that they are a threat doesn't mean they are. Go back to "The Hampton's" Rudy, or how about Qatar, or Dubai, or Saudi Arabia.

Rudy has to keep 'selling' the idea that Iran is a terrible danger. All he really has going for him is the fear factor. Make it seem there is something terrible to fear, like Iran or terrorists and then reassure everyone he can keep them safe.
He is a one trick pony.
