Huck Strikes Romney Back
December 29, 2007 12:51 PM
ABC News' Kevin Chupka and Matt Stuart Report: In his first campaign stop of the day former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., continued to throw punches at his Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney.
Huckabee called Romney out for what he described as misleading voters on his record on taxes and crime. At a meeting with voters Saturday morning in Osceola, Iowa, Huckabee said, "You're not gonna find moments on YouTube of me saying something different about the sanctity of human life today than I said ten years ago ten minutes ago or 50 years ago. You're not gonna find something on YouTube where I say something completely different about gun ownership, the second amendment than I did last week last year or ten years ago."
Huckabee heated up the rhetoric even more with an obvious reference to Romney's gaff regarding his hunting experience. Last spring Romney said, "I purchased a gun when I was a young man. I've been a hunter pretty much all my life," Later he admitted to having gone hunting only a couple times. At today's event Huckabee argued, "You're not gonna hear me making up stuff about my biography," Huckabee said, "I don't go around saying I'm a lifetime golfer because I once rode in a golf cart when I was eight years old."
He even called Romney out for flip flopping on his love for Ronald Reagan. "You're not gonna hear me talk about how I was once a person who was once on the other side of the issue when it came to the Reagan Bush legacy; didn't believe in it, was an independent, and now I love Ronald Reagan. I loved Ronald Reagan when Ronald Reagan first ran for office."
Huckabee closed the attack with what is becoming a common theme in his stump speech, stressing honesty and integrity in the Oval Office, "What I want to tell you today is that you need a president who gets the job honestly, cuz if I don't get it honestly I won't serve honestly. And if I don't tell you the truth when I apply for the job I probably won't tell you the truth if I get the job."
In an effort to point out to Romney supporters what he claims are Romney's inaccuracies regarding his record in Arkansas, Huckabee's campaign sent a group of Arkansas State representatives to Romney's event in Newton, Iowa to "clarify" his record on illegal immigration.
While Huckabee is serious about these clarifications he was not above a little light hearted joking at the expense of his rivals too. Referring to a pair of stuffed turkeys in the entry way to the event Huckabee joked, "I thought it was one of my opponents there for a minute that'll make the blogs." Yes sir…yes it will.
The Huckabee volunteers were Ark. State Sen. Gilbert Baker, and Fmr. Rep. Tim Hutchinson.
Baker was the main speaker.
They said they were at the event to "clarify and make sure that the whole story's told" in response to a Romney mailer they believed misrepresented Huckabee's record.
They also called themselves "strict constructionists" when it came to Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment, not to speak ill of fellow republicans. Although, both Romney and Huckabee could be considers sinners at this point.
Romney campaign responds to Huckabee comments, saying Huckabee would "take the party and the country in the wrong direction."
As Romney unveils another "contrast" ad with Sen. John McCain in New Hampshire today, Romney is staying positive on the stump. Romney is focusing on his own experiences with the Olympics and as Massachusetts Governor, and the campaign said he wouldn't speak with reporters as usually does, avoiding the possibility of further questions on his latest advertising.

Voters are saying that the economy and immigration are the top issues in 2008.
That's why I'm voting for Mitt Romney. Who else is qualified to run the largest enterprise in the world, the US economy but Mitt.
Mitt has heard the American people, concerning illegal immigration, which is why most folks when polled support Mitt''s position.
For me it is about the "future" not the past.
And I wouldn't dare vote for someone from Hope, Arkansas.....every again (Slick Huck and Slick Willie's hometown).............Got me once not again.
In Arkansas folks used to call Slick Huck....."tax hike mike".......i say NEXT!

Right, can't wait until Mitt sends the DEA feds to arrest the rest of all those cancer striken sick people who upon the advise of their doctors obtain legal prescriptions for marijuana to relieve their pain and suffering. Yes, we must continue to ignore State Rights and individual Freedoms and Liberty to protect from those sick people. We must have another pro-war warmongering chickenhawk Christian who supports war, torture, and putting Jesus back into the schools. Thank God he has the $250 million to buy this election. Hmmm, I wonder who the Prince of Peace, Jesus would vote for? The only Christian I think of is Ron Paul. Google Ron Paul and vote for a true patriot with a 20 year track record of supporting the rule of law, freedom and liberty.

......in other news Mitt Romney has re-taken the lead in Iowa.
A brand new ARG poll released this afternoon has Mitt Romney at 32%; Slick Huck at 23%, and McCain at 11%.
Apparently the Ameican people are starting to hear the truth about Slick Huck's "real" record down there in Arkansas where the folks used to call him ........"tax hike mike".

America is a free market country. Should Mitt get something for all the cash he has spent buying the presidency?

I'm from Arkansas, and never heard of ths "tax hike Mike" business til out of staters made it up. Be glad to tell you some of what the Clintons have made up, or I should say cover up. I wonder when these inetigative reporters are going to ask Hillary about those White House travel office papers, or her dead lawyers empty brief case, or the divorce papers she had drawn up at the Rose Law firm which she put on ice when Bill was elected? But I doubt they will. By the way, at the end of tax hike Mike's legacy the state had a billion dollar surplus, which the democrats ran over themselves in one session to spend! Mike will balance the budget and more.

Allen Ridge: What you said about Romney being the best qualified to run the largest enterprise in the world, is one of the main reason's not to vote for him. Those who are deemed capable of running large enterprises, are also noted for pocketing the largest lion's share of the take for themselves and their cronies. We've had enough of that already. We need someone who is willing to pay large dividends to the shareholders. That person is not running on a Republican ticket.

Greg, did yhou forget Jesus told his disciples to go out with swords--he never told them to put away the ones they carried but when it was his time to be arrested. The fact is we maybe called to peronally forgive--turn th eother cheek--but we are also called to fight evil and defend the weak (that cn be militaristically too).
Now, onto the the story above. I liked Romney and was pretty decided on him up until this last week, after watching C-SPAN nd seeing just how much he is attacking Huckabee and McCain. It would be one thing if his ads were true but Huckabee very clearly pointed out all the misinformation. He also has a point that if Romney will lie to get the office (much like Hillary) then how can one trust him to run the Oval Office?
Personally, I am now leaning towards the seemingly most honest, good candidates out there--Huckabee and Obama. I lean towards the latter, even though I am a conservative Republican because I believe Obama can better untite America, not red vs. blue, better than Huckabee (of whom, the liberal religious bigots would never ever give him a chance).

Huckabee would be a continuation of the corrupt, disasterous fundamentalist policies of the Bush years. American can not afford, nor tolerate, any more theocracy.

The nice thing about Romney is that if you do not like his positions he will gladly switch them for you !
How can a person be true to America if they cannot be true to themselves ?

Romney says he supports the worst most corrupt administration and President of all time. Romney is DOA for supporting Bush. Huckabee is nothing but a religious snake oil salesman. Both are bad for America.
