Huckabee on Christ Ad Brouhaha: 'Paul is Dead'

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., had some fun Tuesday answering a question about a brewing controversy over his latest TV ad called "What Really Matters."

Huckabee is running a Christmas ad in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina where the former Baptist minister invokes Jesus Christ -- the first 2008 Republican candidate to do so in a campaign ad.

In the ad Huckabee says that that at this time of year, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends."

Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday.

"That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.

Huckabee was asked if his language crossed the line between faith and politics:  "Absolutely not," he said.

Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'"

The Republican candidate likened the dissection of his Christmas campaign ad to rumors that Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash at the height of the Beatles popularity and replaced by a doppelganger, and that subtle clues were placed inside the group's music for years to come.

QUESTION: What do a Radical, Islamic Muslin Jihadist and a Right-Wing American Evangelical Fanatic have in common?

ANSWER: They BOTH strongly support and religiously follow Mike Huckabee's statement that "a wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband".

I have no doubt that Huck will bring these two groups together.

Women everywhere: beware of this Neanderthal.

The hard right is still PO'd that the republicans duped them into voting for them in 04' by pandering to their homophobic, self-centered, self-important fears. To this day, I can't tell if Bush really was smarter than they are or just too inept to fully follow through with anything that his big mouth started... which really makes me scared that these people can vote. Christmas is a crock developed by large corporations to help them look good on their balance sheets at the end of the year. It has nothing to do with family and friends, goodness and happiness. Everyone I've seen in the past three weeks is a miserable SOB including me since I'm broke (there goes the gift-giving part of it) and my friends feel that getting together is something we can do anytime (there goes the friends and family thing) and I don't believe what religion has tried to cram down my throat for the past 45 years!! Go back to work and get out of debt This is the best thing you can do for yourself and anyone else you know!

Joan: you don't have to have a theological degree to be an ordained minister in some denominations. I know some ordained ministers that have degrees in psychology, some in an area of theology, and some that have no degree in anything. Depends on the denomination. This does not make him a liar.

Actually, the fact that Huckabee has gained so much momentum recently is a perfect example of America's lack of critical thinking. He is an evangelical compassionate conservative in the mold of GW Bush. He is in favor of taxing, spending and providing benefits for illegal aliens, as well as a national smoking ban, regulating people's lives.

However many in the heartland are willing to look past his obvious deficiencies because of his religion and some snazzy ads with Chuck Norris, along with some Dick Morris-brand triangulation.

The people of Iowa need to examine each candidate's positions and not vote only on which candidate is the nicest or how warm and fuzzy they make you feel.

Do we really want another pre-emptive warmonging christian who supports torture as the leader of the free world? If not, then Ron Paul is the only Christian that walks the talk, does not flip-flop and has a 20 year history of supporting the constitution and the rule of law.

Lets quit talking about this and get to the real National Issues

Alex H.: I haven't done my homework, but from my grandmother's teachings many years ago, I believe that is a basic Southern Baptist conviction that a wife must submit. I do not adhere to that concept or denomination, but I do not think that makes them neanderthals. Huckabee did not inflict his religious beliefs into the governing of Arkansas, I lived here all the time he was govenor and not once was this an issue. So what makes you think he would do so as President of the US?

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE AND MAY THE LOVE OF CHRIST BE WITH YOU ALL!!! THERE I SAID IT!!! :)

Robert A. Heinlein predicted that the last election in the US would be 2012, when we would elect a bible thumping fundamentalist. There was no election in 2016.

Frankly if more women submitted to their husbands, adultery would become almost extinct.

Who's Robert Heinlein?

Hmmm, I wonder why there is no media talking about Ron Paul's Holiday Ad.

Posted by: Greg | Dec 18, 2007 4:04:17 PM

You people for Ron Paul keep talking about how he keeps a clear separation of church & state and how badly we need him as president. His campaign office recently marched in our small town CHRISTmas parade, handing out campaign cards and asking for votes. So...where's your separation now? That was a disgusting display. I had not made up my mind one way or the other about him, was still considering and reading, but that did it for me...he will not get a vote from me. He and his campaign offices are hypocrits and I can't stand that.

OK. So maybe this is the time of year for celebrating the birth of Christ, but do we really need a politician running for president to tell us that? I guess it's just his folksy way of trying to be humble. YEAH, RIGHT.

A canidates religion or lack of one even will not make a difference to me. I am concerned about issues and the canidates solutions. Who is best for this country at the present time. I don't care about if the canidate is rich or poor, man or woman, black or white, what religion they are. I want to hear about solutions to the nation's problems. What each canidate wants to accomplish for America.

If you think Huckabee was not influenced by his religion in the exercise of his power as governor of Arkansas, you only have to look as far as the convicts he released mostly on the recommendations of preachers who assured him they had been "saved." Religion is an issue because Huckabee, and his ilk, make it so. I wish you Christians would understand that the rest of us don't care if you are Christian, but we do care that you seem to want the world converted and under Christian dominion. From the outside, most Christian sects don't seem like very loving organizations.

Have you seen/read Huckabee's supporters being interviewed? Their support is the same only phrase rife with cliches about "being a true Christian"... all style, ZERO substance. The future is in great peril considering how many of these pigeonholed-minded people there are.

No wonder why Americans are falling so rapidly behind in math and science... apparently analytical thinking is second to playing the Jesus card.

How about this "candidate" talk about something real for a change: a level-headed foreign policy, tax reform, education reform, global warming, energy, infrastructure, etc. Man or woman, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, or whatever, who cares so long as they have the best policy.

Punk: The issue is not that he doesn't have a theology degree. The issue is that he has CLAIMED for years to have one, but doesn't. THAT is what makes him a LIAR.

"A winter festival was traditionally the most popular festival of the year in many cultures. Reasons included less agricultural work needing to be done during the winter, as well as people expecting longer days and shorter nights after the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. In part, the Christmas celebration was created by the early Church in order to entice pagan Romans to convert to Christianity without losing their own winter celebrations. Certain prominent gods and goddesses of other religions in the region had their birthdays celebrated on December 25, including Ishtar, Sol Invictus and Mithras."

But remember. . .it's all about 'Jesus'

You are all missing the point. Huckabee is warm, humorous and have damn good ads. He has my vote, especially if the Democrats nominate Obama.
