Huckabee: U.S. Should Monitor Pakistanis Coming Into Country
December 28, 2007 7:59 AM
ABC News' Kevin Chupka reports: During a press conference Thursday night in West Des Moines, Iowa, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee suggested that after the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the United States should, "have an immediate, very clear monitoring of our border, and particularly to make sure, if there's any unusual activity of Pakistanis coming into the country. We just need to be very very thorough in looking at every aspect of our own security internally."
While his argument echoed his calls for strict immigration law, Huckabee argued Bhutto's death should not be politicized.
"I don't think it's appropriate to respond in a political way on this," he said. "I think what we need to do is maintain our focus on the fact that it's a real tragic day in the world when a significant political leader, a person of great courage and I think former Prime Minister Bhutto is a person of great courage and she was willing to knowingly risk her life to go back into Pakistan to lead her country once again knowing full well the dangers of it but also showing a remarkable sense of fortitude in perusing it."
He added, "She (Bhutto) represents a threat to Islamic fundamentalists in that as a woman, an educated, sophisticated, strong, capable woman leader, that does pose a threat to those that don’t believe a woman should not be given that platform and that level of equality."
Huckabee also attempted to clarify comments he made earlier about marshal law in Pakistan. In Orlando, earlier in the day, he suggested that one of the United States' priorities should be to determine, "what impact does it [Bhutto’s murder] have on whether or not there’s gonna be martial law continued in Pakistan, suspension of the constitution."
Marshal law having ceased two weeks ago, tonight Huckabee attempted to clear up his gaffe: "And what I said was, and it’s not that I was unaware that it was suspended two weeks ago, lifted to weeks ago. The point was, continued, would it be reinstated, would it be placed back in –- all the aspects of marshal law have not been completely lifted, even now. There’s still a heavy hand I think Musharraf has used."
Pakistan was not the only thing on reporter’s minds tonight in West Des Moines.
Huckabee was asked, as he so often is these days, about the negative attacks sent his way by the Romney campaign. “If the polls are any indication it’s not having the effect I’m sure he’s desiring and I would say it doesn’t look like he’s getting his money’s worth out of it. To spend that kind of money and not being able to move those numbers any more, it’s got to be disappointing to him, “ Huckabee said, “I think a lot of people know that the attacks are both desperate and dishonest. “
He then entered into the argument of his record on commutations.
The rhetoric has become commonplace in his stump but there was a bit of a bite in it just one week away from the pivotal Iowa caucus. "Quite frankly the politics of commutations are simple: don’t ever do one. But if you’re acting in what’s best for your own politics, you don’t ever give one. If you’re acting because you honestly take those cases and you look at them and you try to do justice to them, you will do some. You may even make some mistakes, in fact you probably will ... I’d put my record up against his any day in the world and let that record, the true record go out there before the people of Iowa and they’ll see some mistakes but I’ll tell you, most of the time what they will see is that I would have treated their own son and daughter in a way that they would have wanted their son and daughter to be treated.”
Huckabee fires up the Iowa campaigning early Friday morning and will focus on the central part of the state for the next several days.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Huckabee: U.S. Should Monitor Pakistanis Coming Into Country:
The Huck-ster is at it again. Let’s monitor the Pakistani’s in the country, what about the Saudi’s since all of the 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi or what about the Iranians since their leader wants to kill all Israeli’s?
He was so diligent on immigration that he is offering in state tuition for illegal aliens who go to school in Arkansas. What a huckster.

Huckabee is a "huckster" and has no chance of winning the nomination. The mainstream media and the democrat party continue to play it soft with him b/c they know that when the real game starts (i.e., the general election campaign), they will club him to death like a baby seal.
America needs another former governor of Arkansas as President like I need a new hole in my head.
He is a light-weight and no right-minded Republican should vote for this southern baptist nut job...
Posted by: Robert Marley | Dec 28, 2007 9:44:10 AM
Nut job is Ron Paul, any use of the term toward anyone else is copyright infringement.
Posted by: Matthew, Roanoke VA | Dec 28, 2007 9:59:52 AM
The correct term is martial law NOT marshal law. Huckabee is yet another example of someone who uses the Bible not to live by its message but as a means of masquerade. His humorous one-liners, his constant reach for Biblical references, all should reveal what he really is - another scheming, conniving self-serving politician from the swamp land of Hope, Arkansas. America deserves better. A lot better.

Kris Connolly: "America deserves better. A lot better."
If our party nominates Huckster, we will get better...we'll get HillBillary...How sad is that.

Gaffe? What gaffe? Continued can mean as it was or has been in the past.
Can't you come up with anything better than that Kevin?
Hucka Boom, Boom, Boom. He is doing so well, and there's nothing you can do about it.
It must really be eating you up inside.

The word you're looking for in this statement:
"Marshal law having ceased two weeks ago..."
is spelled "martial".
Posted by: passing by | Dec 28, 2007 10:21:09 AM
Huck knows as much about Pakistan as he does about evolution.
Posted by: Charles | Dec 28, 2007 10:27:24 AM
Paul may sound like a nut job to you, but he's right on about the FED and immigration. Thompson has a great plan for immigration if he could get the spotlight for ten minutes.
Posted by: Kim | Dec 28, 2007 10:29:21 AM
Oh my goodness, we shouldn't monitor anyone, what is this, McCarthyism? I wanna go back to the good old days when we would not let the intelligence community or the police do anything, and destroy careers because of an inference of productivity or enforcement advantage. The days when appeasement ran like the river of American blood it created during the 1990s that was left for the current administration to deal with. We should get Hillary in there and open the flood gates and disband the immigration agencies. Let anyone into this country who wants in, and stop this vast right-wing neo-con plot to conserve a constitutional republic!!!! After all, isn't appeasement what the founding fathers did?

Did a high schooler write this article??
"...showing a remarkable sense of fortitude in perusing it."
I think the word you're looking for is "pursuing".
I'm surprised by the lack of emoticons.

I will vote for Ron Paul whichever ticket he gets. Everyone else is a contributor towards America's destruction.
Posted by: Glenn | Dec 28, 2007 10:42:58 AM
With the events unfolding in Pakistan and the KNOWN Al Qaeda and Taliban presence there, it would be absolutely foolish and reckless NOT to monitor people crossing our borders from Pakistan. I think is a very wise move, is a national security must, and I agree wholeheartedly. I wonder about the critics so quick to snipe at Huckabee on the basis of faith and values. Which do you dislike the most, Huckabee or the Christian faith? I can only wonder at your motives.

This is just another reason to Vote for Ron Paul. The bigger the government gets, the more freedom is suppressed. Someone mentioned Mike H and Fascim a while back. Now I know what they were talking about.
Posted by: 600rra | Dec 28, 2007 11:17:47 AM
So what did he say that was wrong? We ought to be monitoring those whose profile fits the enemy. With this act in Pakistan, it could be a prelude to other attacks on US soil. It fits their usual methods.
Doesn't anyone else think it is stupid not the profile those who fit the enemy's profile? The profile is not Saudi - it is Islamic people who also exhibit support or sympathy for imperialistic Islam.

At 6:10 in this interview Benazir Bhutto tells David Frost that Osama bin Laden was "murdered". Now she has been. Think about that when ABC distributes the latest "bin Laden" video.

Completely oblivious to U.S foreign policy and the rest of the world. It seems like he maybe like Bush in the since he had never really traveled anywhere outside the U.S and really has no idea what is going on in the world. He also mentions a Council On Foreign Relations leader and a New York Times guy as his foreign policy advisers. How sad, that people would even take this guys seriously or frankly any of the "mainstream" candidates on either side of the isle. Pathetic.
Posted by: ACUTS | Dec 28, 2007 11:35:08 AM
"Monitor"? How about "prevent"?!?
Posted by: Quixo | Dec 28, 2007 11:39:21 AM
No, they actually mean "Marshal" law. That is why Bush likes dictators when they are "pro-West." Bush likes them pro-Wild-West so Musharraf had his goons dress up modeled after watching Gunsmoke. He's crazy like a fox and know what floats Bush's boat. So we have a bunch of Pakistanis dressed up in Western garb spitting in to spitoons all over the place. Bush keeps trying to get the Iranian President to wear a black hat so he can then declare him a "bad guy" - without that hat it is too difficult for him to keep straight but Israel is there to tell him who the enemies of the US are....

Vote for Ron Paul??? Evidently there are a few posters here who have joined Dr. Paul in spending too much time in the medicine cabinet. But then I suspect that Huckleberry was the inspiration for the TV show; My Name Is Earl. The people of Iowa must believe they are so insulated from the rest of the world that foreign policy and illegal immigration are irrelevant Once again, Hope gives us none.

Ron Paul is the most intelligent and honest Republican candidate running (besides maybe Tancredo). Our intervention in the Middle East is what has fueled the religious extremism the neocons use as an excuse to intervene. Action-reaction. The other candidates are for the sheeple - and notice how they shift to whatever candidate the MEDIA tells them is winning? Some support, huh? Ron Paul supporters don't do that.
Support Ron Paul - tell the mainstream media to get stuffed.
Posted by: Robert | Dec 28, 2007 12:03:35 PM
"Our intervention in the Middle East is what has fueled the religious extremism"
This is just how ignorant the Paulistas are. Ron Paul is not Republican, he is Libertarian. And the Islamic extremists have been at war with the West for 1,400 years. And, if the Paulistas can remember, they attacked us long before we returned the favor in the Middle East. Remember the 1st WTC bombing? The USS Cole? The various Embassy bombings? The Achille Lauro? The attack on Israel in 1947? The Ottoman Empire?
The breadth and depth of the ignorance of Paulistas is astounding.

Not only the Pakistanis but also Muslims from India who have received extensive training in Terrorism from ISI for terrorism in India and can easily use their training in any part of the world. An embargo on all Muslim immigration will be a good move for safety of our country.

If Huckabee has no chance to win the nomination, then why is he so high in the polls across the nation and doing well in key states? Those who say Huckabee has no chance to win the nomination are simply ridiculous. Huckabee has an excellent chance to win with a solid majority of Christian conservatives behind him. And I hope he does win. The rest of those running don't hold a candle to him.
Posted by: Scott | Dec 28, 2007 12:33:55 PM
Funny how the anti-christian bigots raise their heads anytime Huckabee's name is mentioned. He goes hunting... "he's a wacko Southern Baptist...".
The blatant ignorance of some in our country continues to astound me.
You can always tell when the Romney & Paul supporters are roaming the web to find a blog to spread their smear Clintonian tactics of half truths and baseless innuendos around.
Catch a clue... the politics of destruction are OUT. You are only hurting your own candidate by doing so.

JD islamic fundimentalist's have NOT been at war with the west for 1400 years. Thats downright BS. Any problems that come out of the middle east you can rest assured we did something to start. Read your nations history and you'll see, we've stirred the hornets nest everytime we've been stung.

Does anyone really think that Iowans represent US popular opinion? Of course Hucklebiblethumper will win the state caucus- it will mean nothing when it comes to the nomination. The RNC knows that putting him on the ticket would be about as smart as turning over Pakistan to the taliban.....

Really? Mohammed didn't lead his forces against the native Christian and Jewish peoples of the Middle East? The Caliphs didn't wage war and terror, conquering as far west as Spain? And all this was long before the Crusades. Moslems were defeated outside Vienna in 1529 and turned back from conquering Europe until now. The Islamic Ottoman Empire is known for being the most sadistic and efficient at horrific tortures. And it was Islamic pirates who attacked our merchant ships in the Med and Jefferson sent the Marines to stop it - in the First Barbary War (1801–1805).
Again, Paulistas revel in their ignorance.

I was about to come to the defense of your comments, but you did just fine. If you haven't read it, you might want to pickup Power, Faith & Fantasy: America in the Middle East 1776 to the Present by Michael B. Oren. It is quite educational.
There are a lot of good reasons to dislike Huckabee for the GOP nomination. The fact that he is/was a pastor should not be one of them. Leave that bigotry for the Dems.
Posted by: malarky1 | Dec 28, 2007 1:57:14 PM
Everything the voters need to know about Huckabee's foreign policy experience came from Huckabee's own flapping mouth: "I'm not an expert...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express". He even stated he wanted to 'apologize' in his remarks regarding Bhutto's death. He's a complete moron.
Posted by: Michele | Dec 28, 2007 2:12:26 PM
Huckabee again shows his liberal side by finding a way to pander to women.
He says:
"She (Bhutto) represents a threat to Islamic fundamentalists in that as a woman, an educated, sophisticated, strong, capable woman leader, that does pose a threat to those that don’t believe a woman should not be given that platform and that level of equality."
Gimme a break! As if had Ms. Bhutto been a man she would not have been a target of the Islamo-fascist.
The reaason that the Islamofascist saw Ms. Bhutto as a threat is because she had said repeatedly that she would confront al Queda and the Taliban in Pakistan and destroy them.
Huckabee is a sheep in wolf's clothing.

"And the Islamic extremists have been at war with the West for 1,400 years."
Like I said, our interference in their countries is fueling the religious EXTREMISTS. Sort of like how the Communist attempts at intervention caused the ANTI-Communist reaction (which caused another reaction among the Liberals.)
What do you mean war with the "West"? they have declared war with a Cardinal direction? Western civilization is threatened by statism more so than some muslim boogeymen - in fact, that is the WAY in which statism is being spread! We've always been at war with Eurasia, right, JD. What a sucker you are.
"Remember the 1st WTC bombing? The USS Cole?"
Do you remember the USS Liberty? The Lavon Affair?
Zionism is more of a problem. I don't see Muslims on the Fed. Reserve Board, in the Senate, the SCOTUS, or in the Administration, but I sure see a lot of Zionists. And as a result, we have non-stop war for Israel which is CAUSING this reaction you are so worried about. Fight the cause, not the symptoms.
"The attack on Israel in 1947?"
Ah, you reveal who you are. Who are you loyal to, the US or Israel, eh?

You didn't get your fax from your neocon leaders. You got the nutty "islamofascist" buzzword down (though the judeonazis in Israel are more worthy of their title.) But Michael Savage says it was Butto that was the supporter of the eeeevil terrorists and Musharraf that was the best friend the US has ever had. You guys need to get your lies straight.

I don't know if I'm sarcastic enough to post on this blog.
90% of the citizens of this great country have no interest in what's going on in Pakistan and Huckabee's success reflects that. It's still impressive that he's doing so well considering how meager his campaign has been.
Vote McCain.

Mr. Huckabee gave a rather detailed Sept. 2007 foreign policy address in Washington DC that tends to make the current media items look a bit like picking nits.
Posted by: Ian | Dec 29, 2007 2:23:10 AM
Let’s see where the ignorance lays JD, shall we? In reality, contrary to your extraordinary grasp of events that lead to those attacks, the time line of events that prompted al’Qaeda’s to attack the U.S. started with the expansion of our military presence in the Arabian Peninsula after the First Gulf War. Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait provided this government with a prime, and I might add, long sought after toehold in the once-closed Saudi territory and the Gulf region. You could say that those within this government couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to intervene in the region if they had planned it themselves, something that begs the question of just how much of this was planned since immediate prior to Saddam’s invasion our own Ambassador basically told him that was an internal affair and the U.S. would not involve itself.
Now, for clarity sake you must realize that you have mentioned several different events and sources of modern terrorist attacks on the West. While I am sure they may appear to emanate from the same source in your mind, they are very different and stem from very different events and promptings.
Prior to our intervention into Kuwait to expel Saddam, all terrorist attacks on us or Israel stemmed from our lop-sided support for Israel. Those attacks were based from Palestinian Islamic factions, not from the factions that rose, with our assistance, from the Mujahadeen of Afghanistan. The attacks we suffered at the hands of al Qaeda were not a big surprise to anyone with a knowledge of the Fatwa issued by bin Laden prior to those attacks. He did, after all, tell us that he would attack us and why he was going to attack us, yet our government ignored, for the most part, those direct warnings. The Cole, the two World Trade Center attacks and Embassy bombings were all connected to our establishment of bases on what Muslims consider their holy land. Bin Laden stated very clearly what we were going to be attacked and no one listened to his warnings, as usual.
One of the main things that this government doesn’t learn is that the actions it takes has consequences that endanger this nation and its people. Back in the 80s our government not only assisted the MAK (later known as al Qaeda) with arms, finance, training here in the States, but our government also allowed over 30 MAK offices to open in this country and operate without any supervision in order to raise funds for the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan. Not only that, but the University of Nebraska, under the watchful eyes of the CIA, wrote and published anti-infidel ulta-extremist Islamic textbooks to be distributed in Afghanistan, those books are still being used all over the region, enflaming radical extremism through the Muslim countries.
The problem is that our government never learns, a few weeks ago there was a report that stated the U.S. was now providing training, support and arms to members of Fatah, many of whom are also members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. So, here we go again, training more potential terrorists and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone in our government or the American People. This absolutely confirms that there are factions within our government that either don’t have a clue or that are doing everything in their power to structure some strange power play in the region.
Ron Paul has a much firmer grasp, and a wealth of knowledge, on not only history, but foreign policy, domestic policy and definitely on finance then Huckabee could even retain, much less discuss with an inkling of intelligence.
Posted by: Republicae | Dec 29, 2007 2:42:41 PM
Dr. Paul, in his ability to exude common sense, also predicted the mess we find ourselves in Pakistan thanks to a foreign policy that has changed very much in decades. Basically he has stated that this government has once again thrown its support and placed its faith behind another “shah”, another military dictator who is extremely unpopular and will ultimately fail. Dr. Paul was also correct in his assessment of Ms. Bhutto, stating that as Musharraf began losing his grip on power the CIA helped reintroduce Bhutto into the picture and as we see, the results were tragic to Mr. Bhutto and poses a period of potentially dangerous events in Pakistan.
I strongly suggest anyone with any interest in the real Ron Paul read his book A Foreign Policy of Freedom, it is an astounding expose of not only Dr. Paul’s deep understanding of world events and domestic problems, but it also shows him cut through the mass of confusion that permeates our Congress. He clearly shows just how our Congress is filled with proposals and legislations that bring conflict to this country and pose very real dangers to all of us in this country.
For decades, both the Republican and Democratic Parties have given the American people scant choices. We have been served up a heaping helping of candidates that represent the entrenchment policies that have dragged this nation into the dirt for the last 40 years or more. Every four years we are invited to their political stage play with different actors but always the same ole screenplay. Each of these entrenchment candidates recite their respective lines according to script, right on queue, making their empty promises that we have heard recycled for years.
Each Party has had their candidates elected to the office of president and it rarely takes over four to six years for the American people to see that, once again, they have elected the same feckless leadership as they did before. These entrenchment candidates boldly speak with empty promises drooling from their lips, but offer no solutions to the real issues facing this country. The candidates that represent the entrenchment policies of both political parties will continue to do what they have always done: pander to their big special interest, bow down to the promise of filthy lucre and special privilege and yet they allow the country and its people to be plundered by those in power.
Except for Ron Paul, the rest appear to be little more than parasitic ticks embedded into the flesh of this nation, sucking the life-blood from this country and its people. It is time for a real change, one that will steer this nation away from the disastrous policies of the last 40 years.
This government has, over the past 109 years intervened into the internal affairs of over 200 sovereign nations and what has it gotten us? The failed foreign polices has done little to ensure our security and the proof of that is the crescendo of failure 9/11. With the Trillions of Dollars we spend, every single operating system in this nations defense failed on that dreadful day. That was a failure of leadership as much as it was a failure of a foreign policy that mimics the failures of other nations in the past.
I tell you this, if we don't elect Ron Paul in 2008 then by 2012 we will all wish we had.
