McCain Vows He Won't Let Dems 'Lose This War'

ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: Senator John McCain had harsh words Tuesday for the Democrats both in Congress and on the campaign trail, accusing them of putting politics ahead of national security.

“I can only draw one conclusion from what the Democrats are trying to do today…” McCain said in Inman, South Carolina, “is that their political priorities have taken over their dedication to our nation’s security. And I don’t say that lightly.”

On Monday McCain, R.-Ariz., sent a letter chastising the liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org for calling on Democratic presidential candidates to filibuster the war funding bill before Congress. Tuesday, he tied those Democrats to the group.

“These are good men and women on the other side of the aisle,” McCain said, “but they’re being driven by the most radical left wing organization and the name of it is called Moveon.org.”

McCain went on to attack MoveOn for its ad in September that questioned the veracity of the commander of mulit-national forces in Iraq, General David Petraeus. He then said he would fight against the Democrats, even if it mean time off the campaign trail.

“I’m going to have to maybe go back to Washington and leave the campaign trail depending on what happens here,” McCain said. “Because I’m not going to let them get away with it. I’m not going to let them set a date for surrender. I’m not going to let them lose this war.”

"Won't let Dems lose this war?" That's a good one. If I was McCain, I'd play hot potato with this stupid Republican war, too. How stupid does he think the American public is as to who owns this war?

I'm glad that John McCain is telling it like it is. Democrats want America to lose in Iraq so that they can score political points. It's sad and disgraceful.

Just remember that Congress voted for this war....we are doing really well and Iraq is stabilizing right now. We need to win this and not pull out...if we pull out its only going to make us less safe and secure and embolden the terrorists even more in the future

"How stupid does he think the American public is as to who owns this war?" - Sara B.

Obviously Americans are stupid enough to fail reading comprehension. McCain is stating that by using politics to gain power, the Democrats are ignoring national security and are willing to America to lose the war in Iraq.

Too many "Americans" call the war stupid, call the Republicans stupid, etc, without having the brains to read and participate in logical debate. Critical thinking has been crushed by bandwagon Bush-haters with no facts to push their agenda.

The majority of Democrats in both houses voted for "this war" and so they own it as much as President Bush. But they have since invested in defeat to the point that they are now floundering as they look for a way out, and there is none. It's tough to cut the war funding, too, and they can't do that either. Democrats liked "this war" just fine when it looked easy, but Democrats don't like doing hard things, so they gave up when things got tough. That's a good enough reason to keep them out of power, since there are a lot of tough problems in our future, and Democrats have demonstrated many times that they do do "tough" whether it relates to domestic or foriegn policy. Social Security? Nothing. Reform the ridiculously complicated tax code? Nope. Illegal immigration? Healthcare? Energy? Nothing but talk, no leadership, no serious proposals. Which is why the new Democrat congress has a lower approval rating than the President.

I think he includes the media in with the Democrats as those trying to throw the war.

Every war has profiteers, just as every adverse situation has people that will take advantage of it for their own good......just like the Democrats are doing right now.

Now, someone needs to tell the media the same thing. The media is so busy trying to get "their candidate" ie: Clinton, elected, they're putting our soldiers and our national security at risk. Wake up America. The media is deciding who your next President will be, and you're toeing their line.

It's a good thing we have men like John McCain and others who put the security of our country and our families before self gain and power. Democrats historically have been soft on war, and naive when it comes to foreign policy. God Bless our military and protect them from our enemies foreign and domestic. Protect them on the battlefield and in the public forum from the likes of John Murtha and John Kerry who call them murderers of women and children.

The sad part - beyond the fact it is true - is that it took Mr. Bright Bulb McCain this long to realize this.

This seems to have forgotten what the rest of us remember[That Bush declared the war WON, and mission accomplished...everybody remember???} years ago. Since then, it has been an OCCUPATION,not a war> cAN ONE WIN AN occupation? iF SO , how? dO YOU SIMPLY KILL OFF EVERYONE WHO OBJECTS TO THE OCCUPATION?{hOW WOULD aMERICANS FEEL ABOUT A HOSTILE COUNTRY INVADING US AND occupying US?....i GUSEE IF WE DIDNT JUST TAKE IT, WE WOULD BE insurgents, AND KILLING US ALL WOULD BE JUSTIFIED.

Posted by: resada | Dec 11, 2007 2:40:43 PM

Way to go Resada! Regurgitate the same liberal line that is always brought up when talking about the war "Remember Mission Accomplished?" Wah Wah Wah. The fact is we are there and we have to win it. In case you forget we were attacked on our own soil by people who want to kill us, and will not stop killing us just because we pull out of Iraq. We are not fighting insurgents we are fighting terrorists.

Posted by: Eric | Dec 11, 2007 3:00:31 PM

Resada- If you would get your facts straight, it was NOT Bush who initiated the regime change in Iraq, it was Slick Willie in 1998 who got the Congress to grant that. Unfortunately for Slick Willie he had not the guts or the foresight to see it to the rightful end. Instead he bombed some aspirin factory and killed some night janitor.
Americans who honestly believe that it would have been better to let Saddam have those WMD, as everyone declared that he had, including Happy Hillary, then you are truly stupid. Could you imagine if he actually still had them and used them again? What then? Why didn't we take him out would be your cry, not why didn't Slick Willie take him out. You can't have it both ways.
My guess is that democrats don't have the guts to do the military thing and would rather run up the white flag instead. Maybe we could get a picture of Nancy Pelosi with a Betsy Ross bonnet sewing the flag of surrender. We could get Teddy and John K, that Mutha Murtha, Hillary and all the losers for a photo op. We could send it around the world with Al (can't you feel the Global Warming) Gore's next tour. Due to conclude when the next Ice Age starts fairly soon.

"I'm glad that John McCain is telling it like it is. Democrats want America to lose in Iraq so that they can score political points. It's sad and disgraceful."

Yeah, because the Republicans have NEVER put their political party ahead of the country. Kind of like when Denny Hastert and the Republican leadership covered up for Mark Foley when Foley was trying have sex with the congressional pages. How about the senior drug benefit? $7 trillion to buy the votes of seniors? This was done for the good of the country? run-of-the-mill Republicans are disgusting (and no, I'm not a Democrat).

Posted by: Collier | Dec 11, 2007 3:17:30 PM

No doubt any conservative cringed on the senior drug benefit. But.... if you remember the "atmosphere" surrounding that issue, it was the democrats that brought that issue to the forefront. It was a foregone conclusion that someone was going to get that legislation through. Bush got it done his way. I still hate it but it would have gone through anyway with more benefits. And it will shorten the life span of soc sec because of it. We all die on that one.

Mark Foley? Surprising you mentioned him. A republican gets caught text messaging and he's forced to resign. No sex whatsoever, only text messaging. Clinton is getting "xxxxx" in the Oral Office, lies to all of us and gets to keep his job? Fair? You make the call. Or how about Sandy "Socks" Berger? Caught with stealing totally classified material of the highest order and he gets??? $50,000 fine and a slap on the wrist. But Scooter Libby? He gets a jail term for lying? Even after prosecutor Fitzgerald realizes that Libby was NOT the leak! Again, who's getting screwed here? Not the dems for sure. And the reason is the democrats are expected to have low morals while the expectations are always higher for the republicans. Personally, I would rather have the higher goals than lay in the trough with democrats that seem to content to hang out with the scum that seems to be taking over their party. Sad indeed. And then they bash Lieberman the one guy who actually makes sense. Dumb.

You forgot to mention Barney Frank and his sex house for boys, as well as William Jefferson and his Cash in the Freezer. Both I might add are still in office.

I hope everyone who is expressing their support for this war for oil has encouraged their sons and daughters to enlist and give their lives for Exxon-Mobil and Cheney's Haliburton stock. Even if a short term military strategy is working (but only in the areas we have flooded with extra troops), the reasons given for invading a country which had no connection to the 911 attacks were still lies. McCain is a doddering old fool who won't even be elected to the Senate, again much less be elected president.

Posted by: azjim | Dec 12, 2007 6:57:27 AM

azjim, if you failed to notice the majority of our military men and women vote Republican, I think you'll have the answer to your question.

Liberals see this war one way (the way that azjim described) and conservatives see it another way. Let me define the conservative meaning: Giving "choice" to young Muslim's who feel they have no choice other than martyrdom. This "choice" comes with democracy. When societies are given a choice in their govt, they tend to act more civilized. If they don't like something or someone, they vote for change - instead of the way they have been brainwashed to believe, martyrdom.

Democrats told voters that if they voted for them last November, they would end the war. That was a lie they fed to the masses and people like azjim lapped it right up. They knew, even with a majority, they had no intentions of ending the war. None. And, they continue to spew this lie, because secular progressives buy it. But, the harm that this lie is doing to our troops and the security of our nation, is too great. The only democrat I have respect for is Lieberman. He chose to do the RIGHT THING vs the party's chosen speak-vomit. Even if that means losing and his poll ratings taking a dive, he knows it's the right thing to do. And, democrats cut him from their party because of it.

Posted by: Stacy | Dec 12, 2007 1:07:20 PM

John McCain is a bonifide war hero. I am amazed that people who have done so much "less" than he has, have the audacity to demean and spew their vile venom at him. If this was the early 40's these born losers would be facing prison on two counts.....proposing a surrender.....and for sheer stupidity. There ought to be a law against both!

Posted by: Rich Cipri | Dec 12, 2007 6:56:58 PM

So, Bush/republican supporters...tell me this? Why is it that our nation plunged into debt once Bush took office, gas and home heating prices have skyrocketed and America's lower and middle class have begun to lose their homes and financial security? People focus more on personal issues than on national ones. Like the nasty comments "slick willy"? A little vileness going on there right? Does this person enjoy the poverty the Bush administraion has plagued every American with? Do we really want MORE of this dillusion?

First thing Bush did was panic the stock market when he boldly stated we were headed into recession? Hmmmm. Seems to me Clinton cleaned up happy times in America. Bush steps in and the other countries see this cocky polititian who plays dirty politics to win an election and then boldly plunges a whole country into despair and starts pushing his weight around in foreign policy! Why didn't he do something with his intelligence and prevent 9/11? Where was Bush then? He also played a very convincing card in invading Iraq. The Dems that voted did so on BUSH'S word! Boy Bush called it wrong there right? But lets blame Democrates instead of the man who put us there! He has more pull on the oval office and vetos everything the Dem congress has tried to do. Why do you suppose! Lets point more fingers!
