Paul Entices College Supporters Not to Skip Town for the Holidays

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: With the explosion of his moneybomb and his flush campaign coffers, Texas Republican Ron Paul, who is mounting a spirited libertarian-flavored run for the Republican nomination, is trying to ramp up his ground game in Iowa, which caucuses on January 3rd.

Unfortunately for Paul, who seems to be more popular than most Republicans on college campuses, the caucus is smack dab in the middle of winter break.

In order to entice potential Paul supporters who are enrolled in school in Iowa, but don't live there normally, to stay in the icy state, the campaign is putting some of that $6 million plus dollars they raised over the weekend into the hands of the college students who have helped give Paul so much buzz on the Internet.

According to campaign spokesman Jesse Benton, college students are bing given a debit card by the campaign with a $40 per day perdiem (for meals) and are being encouraged to stay in cabins at a camp ground outside Des Moines.

"Because the students are all volunteers and pay for their own travel, it is relatively cheep. About $70,000," Benton said.

Keeping the students in town is only one aspect of the Paul game plan in these waning weeks of the Iowa primary campaign. Just paying for the room and board and giving them a meal stipend.

Students who go to school in Iowa, but are not from there are allowed to caucus under Iowa law.

"We are really ramping up our ground game," Benton said. "We are hiring between 50 and 100 county field coordinators. They are paid and they are on an incentive system. If they do well, we'll give them some extra cash."

Wow, can you imagine what the outrage would be if Hillary Clinton did this?

Oh, it's a "per day perdiem." As opposed to what?

Georgia - you're right. If Hillary did this, it would be "The Decline of Western Civilization III"

Is it ethical to buy votes? I really don't think so, but this seems about as clear an effort to buy votes as I have ever seen. I generally respect Ron Paul for his positions and the way that he conducts himself, but now is the time for the FEC to step in, if you ask me. Paul needs to use his money in some other way.

This information is incorrect. (Blank) is actually asking students from around the nation to come into Iowa and spread his message. There are about 300 students helping out in Iowa by canvassing, making phone calls, and just doing groundwork. The campaign is paying for their stay. These students would not be eligible to caucus. The program does not exclude students from Iowa, but the article is misleading in saying that the campaign is paying for students to stay in Iowa to caucus.

This information is almost completely false. I am one of the students going to Iowa for the nine days leading up to the caucuses. The way it works is about 300 of us are being housed by the campaign and given $15 per day for meals in exchange for canvassing. None of us are going to be voting...we are all coming in from out of town and I wish we were getting $40.

This article again is biased against Paul. Check out the Glenn Beck show where it scrolled on the bottom of the page "Paul is Dead". You will see an established movement in the media to censor and smear Ron Paul. This is because he is against the higher taxes, a constitutionalist, libertarian and was against the wars. The neocon media machine doesn't like this and their owners are rooting only for the favored people and well known names. Open your eyes and don't believe everything you see in the media. Ask questions, Is this true? What source was this from? Are there any words with bad connotation? If you ask these questions you will see answers. Ultimately they will probably censor my posting too. They did this on many other sites. He is not paying students for votes. If you video tape their conversations and have hard evidence not circumstantial evidence which can be twisted I will believe it but so far evidence is nill.

wow. this is completely wrong. he is getting students from ACROSS THE NATION to knock on doors in Iowa in exchange for food and a place to sleep. NOT to keep Iowan students from leaving. extremely poor reporting, what a disgrace.

So when Obama asks students to stay in town, people want to call shenanigans, but Ron Paul actually tries to pay people to stay in town to caucus for him this is ok? I'm reasonably certain he won't be handing out these debit cards to people wearing Obama t-shirts or Romney buttons.

Posted by: Louis | Dec 19, 2007 2:07:34 PM

Well, if you go to Ron Paul's site, and click on Christmas Vacation In Iowa on the upper-right hand side, you will see that this is for students NATIONWIDE to go to Iowa and KNOCK ON DOORS in exchange for food and a place to stay, NOT to go out and caucus.

Democrat Iowa caucus rules allow people to come in and participate in the caucus for even just one day and leave. I've heard some candidates don't just pay for people to stay, but pay to ship them out to vote for them in the caucus.

So where's the David Yepsen article slamming this, and where;s the Hillary Clinton scream of foul play here? Sure, there is any. Only when Obama does it.

This article is seems biased against the campaign - these people are volunteers.

Bless Ron Paul's Heart. He's one of the last standing American Politician with no ties to the two Communist Parties that are aiming to take over the White House again. Country folks, the blood of this country, will show these radicals that enough is enough and Ron Paul will be elected as President.

...And so many people bash RP supporters as being "truthers" or "conspiracy theorists." this blog has used intentionally vague language to suggest that Paul is BUYING voters. This is ridiculous and embarrassing for a national media outlet

If he wins the election, would I be able to finish my doctoral thesis at UCLA???-MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS TO QUANTUM CHEMISTRY.

All Z. Byron Wolf had to do was read about the program on the RonPaul2008 website. Based upon his other articles and misrepresentations about Ron Paul, this is no surprise. They don't get it, this kind of reporting only makes Ron Paul supports work harder and denote more money. Ron Paul broke all one day fundrasing records with over 6 million last Sunday, the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.

Wow. It used to be that the media was accused of being liberal in the extreme. Now ExCIMan refers to the "Neo-con media". So, which is it? Or does it depend on whether your a democrat or republican?

Posted by: Bob | Dec 19, 2007 2:51:04 PM

This is garbage journalism. Ron Paul is helping student volunteers from out-of-state come to Iowa so they can help with canvassing. He is NOT, as this article suggests, paying students to stay in Iowa so they can vote.

Bob writes: "Wow. It used to be that the media was accused of being liberal in the extreme. Now ExCIMan refers to the "Neo-con media"."

If you weren't aware that neo-cons are liberals in the extreme - you owe yourself a bit of research into that movement.
