Romney: Illegal Immigration and God
December 14, 2007 5:23 PM
ABC News' Matt Stuart Reports: With the Iowa caucuses just 20 day away, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney hammered his rivals on the issue of illegal immigration and railed against what he has called "the state religion of secularism."
"Mayor Giuliani … presided over a sanctuary city," the former Massachusetts governor said during a campaign stop at a country club in Carroll, Iowa.
"He said, and I can quote almost exactly, 'if you happen to be an undocumented status' -- that's code for illegal -- 'we welcome you here,'" Romney said, blasting former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Earlier Friday, Romney's campaign directed reporters to video tape of the then-Mayor saying New York was "quite tolerant of undocumented immigration."
At a recent Republican debate, Giuliani said Romney had a "sanctuary mansion," because the company Romney used to maintain his property used illegal immigrant labor.
The Giuliani campaign has also criticized Romney's proposal when he was governor to give training to state troopers in Massachusetts to enforce federal immigration laws -- arguing the measure came in Romney's last month in office and was never put into effect
Hammering another rival, Romney criticized Friday former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who has quickly risen in the polls in Iowa to overtake Romney's lead.
"It doesn't make sense in my opinion to do as [Huckabee] did, which is raise taxes on tax payers in his state, and then use tax dollars to pay rates and benefits to people who come here illegally," Romney said, referencing Huckabee's support of a bill to give in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants.
When asked about putting prayer back in school, Romney said "I don't think we should prohibit God from public places," though he said he wasn't advocating prayer in the classroom every day or teachers leading classroom prayer.
Romney also said he, "recognize[s] the right of people not to believe," but argued, "even those who don't believe in God, typically believe in something greater than themself, and they believe in a purpose greater than themself."

Mitt Romney will be the greatest President since Ronald Reagan perhaps surpasing him even. He will bring this country together un like Bush the divider.
I so hope it will be so .

Mitt Romney is right on every issues as the country prepares for the Primaries. He is the loudest candidate sounding off warning on the collapse of our immigration system if nothing done sooner. He is on target to be the candidate that better deal with the economic chaos. On education Romney is the best educator in chief as he did in Massechussets.

Right, can't wait until Mitt sends the DEA feds to arrest the rest of all those sick people who upon the advise of their doctors obtain legal prescriptions for marijuana to relieve their pain and suffering. Yes, we must continue to ignore State Rights and individual Freedoms and Liberty to protect from the sickos. We must have another pro-war warmongering chickenhawk Christian who supports war, torture, and putting Jesus back in the schools. Thank God he has the $250 million to buy this election. Hmmm, I wonder who the Prince of Peace, Jesus would vote for?

Yes, Mitt is the one we need, he promised to protect us and will continue the policy of ignoring international law in respect to torturing terrorist. The idea that the government sould allow Liberty and Justice for All is absurd when it comes to terrorists. There is nothing wrong detaining people for six years on any assertion by the government in order to protect us. We must continue to refuse to provide legal mechanism to allow suspected terrorist to challenge the goverment's assertions. They have no rights, period. We must protect our country from the terrorists even it it means arresting Americans who believe that terrorist are entitled to have a lawyer or have the right to a trial. We must continue to support pre-emptive war and attack IRAN or any other country on the War on Terror. Mitt is the man for the job, best of all, he is a Christian, I think. Well, that's good enough for me.

To bad Tancredo does not have the millions to campaign, he would send these illegals packing! next best on tap is Mitt, I think he will do what he can although certainly without the convictions of Tom.
