Romney Still Used Lawn Service Employing Illegals, Paper Says

ABC News' Matt Stuart Reports: The Boston Globe is reporting that Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has continued to use a company that employs illegal immigrants. This first became an issue last year when the Globe reported that Romney's lawn service employed illegal immigrants.

Gov. Romney released a statement tonight saying he gave the company "a second chance with very specific conditions," last year, but that he fired the company today after learning they were still employing illegal immigrants.

Romney has taken a tough stance on immigration, frequently calling for the United States to "turn off the magnets," that draw illegal immigrants into the country. Romney has called for a border fence and also promised to cut back funding to "sanctuary cities" and states that give drivers licenses or college tuition breaks to illegal immigration.

But Romney has also faced criticism from rivals, particularly former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who claims he was weak on immigration during his term as Massachusetts governor. At the recent CNN/YouTube debate, Giuliani accused Romney of turning his home into a "sanctuary mansion."

Romney shot back asking his rival if he was suggesting that it's possible for a homeowner to check the legal status of every employee hired by a company doing law work.

This is ridiculous. You call yourself the news? And you report something like this?

Ah yes; Second chances. Opportunities abound for the one giving the second chance and the one receiving. The giver offers redemption and can be praised for being a kind just person. And the receiver is wide open to change his ways or be an in road for the givers enemies. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I’ve been there and have gotten plowed over. If elected I hope he really weighs what our friends/enemies can do to us if they sell us out. I have no doubt the contractor sold Mitt out and deliberately brought illegal workers onto his property to work. Mitt has no control over the payroll of the contractor. What’s that song? “Nice guys get washed away like the snow in the rain.”

I’m sure people that take what seem to be worthwhile risk can identify with second chances. If it works out you get pounced on by your detractors and can reap a hefty reword. But if it doesn’t you still get pounce on by your detractors and have to deal with whatever the cost may be. A recent example that comes to mind of someone giving a second chance is Donald, Tara, and Rosie. So any risk is weighed against the trust, benefit, and cost. This unfortunately is a case of misplaced trust and not a case of poor judgement.

Unbelievable...Immigration being the main Republican issue... We have a soaring debt, escalating healthcare costs, a war and strategic threats and your consumed by the guy who cuts the lawn and cleans dishes. To think, I actually served this nation to this... Never again will I live the "life of danger" for this country...chair borne for life...

Personally I don't care who Romney used for his lawn service, at least they were working and not milking the american tax paying dollars on welfare like the illegals do here in California.

I hope Romney gave the families he fired a nice Christmas bonus. Grinch anyone? For politics, they lose their job? If we fired every lawn service firm who employed illegals, who would mow the lawns? We need to protect our country from terrorists but why fire someone right before Christmas. Republicans are going to shoot themselves in the foot with these kind of Grinch-like actions. What was that Dickens movie????

How do Ms Cramer, Ms Sacchetti and Ms Page know the two people that exited the pick up truck were illegal immigrants?

Those who hire illegal immigrants do so for one simple reason, greed. The businessman makes his profit by hiring illegals at low wages that Americans that pay taxes cannot afford to live on, low wages that suppress all wages at the lower end of the wage structure. If Mitt thought that giving his greedy lawn service co. a second chance would change the exploiter, he has shown a naivete that we can do without in the White House. On the other hand, why give a second chance to a greedy businessman that makes his profits by the exploitation of illegals or anyone elce?

The lawn service hired the illegal immigrants not Mitt. The contractor violated his second chance trust in it. The greed is with the lawn service; taking advantage of and under paying those hired. Even labor unions should be demanding fare wages and benefits for anyone working in the US.

Illegal Immigration is a huge problem in this country from 25 years of neglect. This should be a sign that illegal immigrants are every where - I wonder how many other candidates had nannies, repairmen at their house that are illegals. Face the truth, we have a serious problems.....got an answer...SECURE THE BORDERS....START COUNTING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND DEVELOP OR RE-ESTABLISH A NEW IMMIGRATION PLAN.......THANK YOU!

Dear Luke,
You realize that the illegal aliens are the only ones who are willing to do the work. They haven't taken away anyone else's jobs. That's evident in the fact that this country has such a low percentage of unemployed. When you decide to admit that you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about, then maybe there is a chance for rational dialogue. Until that time comes, however, you have fungus on your sandals. Perhaps when this country makes telemarketing illegal, then those people will find their true abilities in picking grapes and mowing lawns. So, congratulations for winning the "idiot of the day" award. Way to go.

Our Government has been unwilling to enforce the laws as they pertain to people illegally entering this country. Arizona has taken bizarre steps to do its own policing of the problems. Many drivers are stopped for no good reason, just to check their vehicles, and they are establishing permanent check points within the state, and I find these actions to be a complete violation of my citizen's rights. Is this the right way to address this problem? I don't think it is, and the longer the Federal Government remains incompetent or indifferent or both, this problem will only get worse and worse and worse. Someone in my community actually suggested that these measures were a necessary evil. I could not possibly disagree more.
